Blockbuster exclusives???

I rented a movie from Blockbuster the other night and on the case it said Blockbuster exclusive. How exactly is it exclusive to them? What is stopping Hollywood Video or any other rental joint from walking into Best Buy, Wal*Mart or wherever and buying a copy to rent out to people?

Re: Blockbuster exclusives???

Weinstein (Genius Productions) have a contract with them. I guess Hollywood or some other rental store could gank a copy, but Blockbuster has exclusive rental distribution rights, I believe.

edit--From wikipedia: "Blockbuster has been the exclusive rental chain for The Weinstein Company movies since January 1, 2007, although due to the First Sale Doctrine, other rental stores can still rent DVDs released by The Weinstein Company."

Re: Blockbuster exclusives???

no one is stopping them, since there's an IFC/Blockbuster deal. Netflix I assume, had to purchase 'Boy A' for me to rent that from them since there's no Blockbuster near me to rent it from.

Re: Blockbuster exclusives???

BBV exclusives are such a rip. they tend to lose all to most of the special features on a retail version. they usually just have the movie and it sucks!

So Weinstein movies are exclusive to Blockbuster, but you can rent them from anywhere...
Why even bother having a contract with Blockbuster?

Because no one else carries them in their store! Can you say "exclusive"?

There are instances where the BBV exclusive rental versions have features not on any of the retail versions. The two GRINDHOUSE films at BBV both had a featurette not on the retail editions available anywhere else, and the BBV rental version of Stuart Gordon's STUCK has all the extras that were on the Blu-Ray, but were nowhere to be found on the regular retail edition.

Those are the only three I picked up.

Best Buy must not have gotten the memo, because I could walk in there right now and get a copy. I guess you and I have different definitions of the word "exclusive".

The deal with Blockbuster is an exclusive rental arrangement only. The titles can be purchased at retail anywhere, including Best Buy, as you said. So it's still somewhat of an "exclusive", but just not a 100% one. Ha!

As far as rentals go, other rental stores can still acquire the titles to rent if they want to, but they have to get them at retail or by other means and don't get the usual acquisition discounts that they normally would. That's why on Netflix, most new Weinstein titles have a "Very Long Wait". Netflix doesn't acquire as many as they normally would because the discs cost them a lot more since they can't get them through the usual distribution means.

As someone else mentioned, the answer is nothing whatsoever. Most Hollywood Videos in the area do in fact run over to a retailer and buy at least one or two copies of Weinstein Co. releases (at least, anything that will be popular) so they have some to rent out.

Re: Blockbuster exclusives???

It usually refers to just extras, and since they always sell their extra DVDs after a while, you can just purchase them outright. My brother in law's collection is mostly Blockbuster PV's, and I see them in used DVD shops all the time.

Not sure if this is a complete list or not but Blockbuster lists their exclusives here.

Redbox usually does not get the Blockbuster exclusives. Netflix is hit or miss. Most of the time it automatically goes to very long wait on the first day of it's release.

Netflix did not send me Zack and Miri Make a Porno today. It was #1 on my queue. Redbox will not have it. It is a Blockbuster exclusive. :(

Does anyone know the Blockbuster exclusive special features on these?

Most of the "Big" titles like The Mist or Halloween are available to buy at any retailer on street date (which have a "for sale only" disclaimer on the DVD itself), but the lesser ones usually aren't available for sale for at least a few months after BB gets them for rental. As far as rentals go, I've never seen any Weinstein titles available for rent at Holywood or Movie Gallery.

xage 02-03-09 09:31 AM

Re: Blockbuster exclusives???

The Gridnhouse films : Death Proof and Planet Terror were available nationwide as well.

That's not entirely correct. The lesser titles may not be carried at most B&M stores at the time of the BBV rental release, but that's just because most B&M's don't carry a lot of lesser titles in-store. You can readily buy any Weinstein release at on-line retailers day-and-date with the BBV rental release.

Re: Blockbuster exclusives???

I heard that only Blockbuster could get the rentals from their distribution company and if other stores, like Hollywood, couldn't. But they could buy copies from other places for rental or something like that.

I see The Last Winter on that list. Not only does Netflix have that... they even have it as an Instant Viewing option.

Yeah, I think the word "exclusive" in this context is pretty much meaningless...

Re: Blockbuster exclusives???

this thread is pretty funny.
no one seems to be following what anyone else is saying.

bbv has exclusive rental rights meaning they are they only rental outlet that will get the dvds directly from weinstein(genius).
any other store that wants to rent these will have to actually go to a retail store and buy it.
As netflix has done for some titles and some Hollywood also.
For last winter being on instant viewing, I have no answer for that.

btw that wacky wobbler is not a bbv exclusive, only the lenticular art is the exclusive.

Only have these two:
Death Proof - "The hot rods of Death Proof" footage
Planet Terror - "Double dose interview w/ the Director & Cast of Grindhouse" footage

I believe usually the ones that have bonus content indicates on the front cover..

Other Blockbuster exclusives titles that have exclusive content that I have are:

The Nanny Diaries
Arthur and the Invisibles
The Ex
You Kill Me
DOA: Dead or Alive

Later

No...the BBV "exclusive rental" is only one disc....it does not have the Popcorn Porn documentary, the Money Shots Webisodes, or the Comic-Con 2008 footage...it does have the deleted scenes, the bloopers/outtakes reel, and both parts of the Seth Vs Justin improv (the second part being the only BB exclusive, it is just an additional 6 minutes)....

Battle In Seattle, which is a BBV exclusive, is now available for rent. Purchase date for amazon is March 10. JCVD is at BBV on 2-24...Amazon 4-28. Other exclusives are not even listed on Amazon... So believe what you want.

Re: Blockbuster exclusives???

There are at least 25 titles where Blockbuster has exclusive content on the discs.

I don't currently have a list or easy access to them (spread throughout dozens of boxes and thousands of exclusives), but will try to soon add some new ones to the lists already provided.

That's weak, although with the second half only being 6 minutes I have a feeling we'll be seeing it on YouTube.

Re: Blockbuster exclusives???

You are all correct that the Weinstein titles are rental exclusives, not retail. This means that any other rental store (or Netflix) can buy them online or from a big box store and throw them on their shelf BUT they cannot get them from their regular distributors or have revenue sharing deals for them like they have with most other studios.

The BB rental versions of most of the Weinstein titles do add some silly bonus features, but sometimes they are also downgraded ("I'm Not There" was a 2-disc set at retail, the BB version only contained the 1st disc).

I guess they learned their lesson about exclusivity because when they signed their deal with IFC, they made is so they get the movies at least 60 days prior to a retail release. The only time that this has not been the case was with a few IFC/Red Envelope (netflix) co-productions like "Love Songs" and "4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days". Those were available at Netflix and Blockbusters in advance of a regular retail release.

The thing I find odd about the IFC deal is that casual renters are not going to have any idea what these movies are. Even less so because they are not available in any other stores for 2 months and there is no advertising around their release. I love indie films and try to keep up with the IFC titles, but I have yet to find out how to see a schedule of when these titles hit Blockbuster in advance.

Occasionally there are other titles that get branded as Blockbuster exclusives and I am not totally sure how they end up there. Most recently, they got the excellent French thriller "Roman De Gare", which did decent art-house biz last year for Samuel Goldwyn. That movie had nothing to do with Weinstein or IFC, and yet it is available right now at Blockbuster and there is no retail disc yet.
