Anyone Care to List Their Valuable OOP Dvds?
Do you have any rare or valuable dvds in your collection? Yes, there is the OOP thread, but just because a dvd goes OOP does not mean it goes up in value.
Here’s some OOP gems in my collection: 1. WWE – Back in Black – paid 6 bucks for this dvd documentary on the NWO. Now it sells used on Amazon for 50 bucks. 2. Batman Anthology dvds – I bought these movies brand new at Sam’s club for $11.88. Now they go anywhere from $20 – 40 bucks on Amazon. I hate to part with them as the dvds have excellent documentaries on the Batman franchise. Shame that these have not been reissued. 3. Last of the Dogman – excellent movie that begs for the blu-ray treatment. Just gorgeous to look at. It looks like The Flash and the Star Trek 2 disc movies may be soon OOP. I can’t find them on BN.com. Screw this, I am hanging onto my collection. I believe we will see a big glut of tv series become rare and valuable. |

Woah, I had no idea Back in Black was rare, I also have it.
The Batman movies will likely get re-printed when the BR Anthology comes out in March. I also expect the Star Trek movies to be printed when the new one comes out by JJ Abrams. I really don't have many rare DVDs, I tend to buy most of my stuff on the cheap so if a DVD is rare it doesn't get to the prices I like to pay |

I have plenty of stories of finding DVD's for less than either their list price or going secondary market price, but I really don't have anything that anyone would consider a true, OOP gem. I mean, I too have the Batman: The Motion Picture Anthology 1989-1997, but I wouldn't consider that anything special. It was on the market just a few years ago and has only been off for a little while--and is soon to return.

Dont really know exactly how much any of these are worth or why they went OOP.
Never considered selling them cause I'm not a big fan of the ebay route. Wonder how much I could get though.... I don't really pay too much attention to their value, but there are a handful of titles in my collection I wouldn't want to have to replace.
'67 Spiderman A handful of OoP Criterions The entire Disney Treasures line - I know you can get maybe 80% of this pretty easily, but the other 20% will cost more than all the others combined. |

A few of my gems:
-The original versions of Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II, with REAL cover art. -The Mummy: Ultimate Edition - Sure, the transfer may be old, but the cover is badass. -WWF WrestleMania X-Seven - I paid $76 to get this DVD new and sealed. It's one of the best ppvs of all time, and was totally worth it. -WWF SummerSlam 2001, WWF Survivor Series 2001, WWF WrestleMania X8, WWE Judgment Day 2002 (Koch) - Some similarly expensive WWF DVDs, but since they were new and sealed, it was worth it. -WWF Unforgiven 2001 - I paid five bucks for this brand new in 2005. Most of mine are Disney DVDs. I own the original Bug's Life 2 Disc set, (not sure if it's worth anything but it's oop) Snow White Platinum Edition, Toy Story Ultimate Toy Box, and The Fantasia Anthology. I bought all these new usually on release day.

Of the OOP DVDs listed above, the only one that qualifies as a true rarity is the Pioneer version of Farewell, My Lovely, which was pulled off the US market before its scheduled release. Some slipped through the cracks, sold by online retailers and at stores which put the DVD out before the release date. I got mine from Reel.com. Criterion's Hard Boiled and The Killer were in demand and had a high price, but demand tapered off as bootlegs flooded the market. I passed on the Criterion The Killer, but did get it as a DVD in the OOP Fox Lorber double DVD which had The Killer and Hard Boiled. Farewell, My Lovely was sold as a R2 in the UK, and some US sellers have tried to pass that version off as the US release (which had no region coding). Double Indemnity also had a high price, until Universal released it again on DVD.
The Muse and Topsy Turvy were USA Films DVDs that vanished from the marketplace after USA Films folded up its DVD distribution arm, but not before I bought them. At one point, Topsy Turvy had a selling price of over $40 at Amazon Marketplace, but with no demand, that price has gone way down. The problem in most cases of OOP DVDs is that the reason a DVD went OOP in the first place is usually that not too many customers wanted the DVD when the DVD first came out. Some businesses seem to buy up the entire inventory of a store's DVD rental stock to resell the used DVDs on the Internet. Some of those DVDs may turn out to be OOP, and off they go to places like eBay with a higher price tag. I always wonder about sellers who state that their DVDs are in the original shrink wrapper. Except for some releases from companies like Warner Bros, whose plastic shrink wrapping has an imprint of the WB logo on the border, how hard could it be to shrink wrap an already opened and played DVD? Old OOP DVDs are of real value only to the purchasers who wanted the movie to keep in the first place. Eventually, Farewell, My Lovely will get another DVD release, once the US rights issue is legally resolved over the source Raymond Chandler novel. For the rest of the "valuable" OOP DVDs out there, they will never be a good investment, not when its costs so little to re-release an already mastered DVD. And most buyers consider DVDs ephemera, to be watched once or twice, then to move on to the next release. |

I don't know if these two count, but I have the Best Buy "Special Edition" of Cars, which has four die-cast collectables of Lightning McQueen, Doc Hudson, Mater, and Fillmore. in it. I bought this one just to display and I bought a copy of the movie only to watch. When Volume 4 of Speed Racer came out it also had a die-cast collectable of Speed's "Mach 5" Race Car. Once again I bought one just to display and another to watch. (As for the Collectable that was in the box I opened I inserted a Screweye in it's midst and it now graces my Christmas Tree each December!) :D

There is big difference between the video business today and the business in the 1980s and 90s. Back then, most videos were either sold in bulk to video stores at rental prices ($50-100 a tape) or from B&M retailers. As the number of new titles expanded each year, there just wasn't room to keep stocking everything so lots of stuff went out of print due to lack of sales and there were many, many quality films that had been released briefly one time and then vanished into the woodwork.
Now however, with online rentals and sellers and a secondary market in places like ebay, it's easier for companies to keep a lot more titles in print and available to send out and far fewer titles have gone out of print. With the exception of Disneys and limited edition Criterion runs, almost all the titles that have gone out of print have been replaced fairly quickly with newer versions of the same movie, usually in better condition or with more features. With the exception of a relative handful of completists and collectors, no one really cares which edition they have of a popular movie. There is a saturation point and we may be getting there fairly soon, especially if the studios keep adding to their Blu Ray inventory. Low selling titles won't be kept in print forever and they won't be released on Blu Ray (why lose money twice on the same movie). Supply for those movies will go down to the levels where they will command collector prices. I have about 2000 movies and the only one I know for sure is out of print (not counting titles that have subsequently been reissued) is The Master Gunfighter with Tom "Billy Jack" Laughlin, a short lived release from a secondary label that I found dumped in a bargain bin. |

^Wow I had no idea Mischief and Lisense to Drive were OOP. Looks like they are going for at least $20 a piece on ebay. I may have to sell these. I got them for only like $2 a piece in a AB sale on DDD a year or two ago and they are still wrapped.
