That's weird. I thought I had seen the Blu-ray listed on Amazon, but then both DVD Times and DVDAf give it a 2/3/09 release date. Has it been an Amazon exclusive?

Yes, it's an Amazon exclusive for now. If you don't want to wait, you can have it in your hands next week from them.

Supposedly the Blu-ray disc looks amazing...I've heard it compared to The Warriors, which is probably the single most impressive looking catalog title I've seen from that general era.

I knew there was a reason I hadn't bought the bare bones version, the commentary from Carpenter is enough for me

I wasn't aware the original cut of 'The Warriors' was out on Blu Ray, or are you talking about that lame version with comic books dissolves and crap?

I'll keep my original cut on DVD if that's the case.

Wonder if the DVD video quality is better than the last re-release SE that came out a few years ago... being a Carpenter nut, ill buy if the video quality is truely improved.

There are no new extras. The previous Image disc also had the interview, commentary track, and isolated score.

I'm talking about 'that lame version'...I'm not sure where it'd sound like I was suggesting otherwise. I hate all of that too, but the movie proper still looks very, very pretty.

Since you didn't mention the 'The Warriors (Something) Director's Cut' it was implied a little.

There's only one 'The Warriors'.

I wish they would Blu Ray the original.

I can most definitely vouch for that. Totally surprised me, as far as transfers go.

Same here. I loathe the Director's Cut. The comic-book panels are utterly ridiculous looking. I'm glad I didn't sell off my bare-bones theatrical cut disc.

Also ANIMAL HOUSE (1978) the last dvd release has the same look like the (lame) THE WARRIORS DVD.

How does the BD compare to the HD-DVD?

What is the average video bitrate of the Blu? Hopefully it's on a 50 GB disc.

The HD DVD is of the remake, and that's a completely different movie.

Re: John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 SE and Blu-ray: 2/3/09

PIcked up the new Remastered DVD today since it was only $10+tax. The selling point for me was the new 5.1 DTS track they have made and its awesome. The opening music booms and the movie is crystal clear for most of the dialogue. I have taken 3 screen captures off my laptop from the 2003 and 2009 versions in case anyone else wondered if they should upgrade. I mostly upgraded for the DTS and slightly better video. Extras are the same except for new menus which are still kinda lame.

Re: John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 SE and Blu-ray: 2/3/09

Review of the Blu-ray disc from High-Def Digest:
This first-ever-high-def version looks even better, with a surprisingly sharp and attractive image for a film now nearing its 35th anniversary. This 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode (2.35:1) enjoys a very nice source. The print is quite clean, with only a smidgen of dirt here or there to distract. Grain is present, but it's very film-like and in keeping with the movie's vintage. Colors are fairly vibrant and almost betray the '70s origins, with nice reds, blues and oranges. Fleshtones are also good. Detail is perhaps not on par with a new release, but I was pleasantly surprised with the transfer's sharpness and depth. Shadow delineation is about the only area truly lacking by comparison, with some fall-off into black (due in large part to the film's low-budget limitations). For a decades-old catalog release, I was impressed with 'Assault on Precinct 13.'
Sounds good!

Where'd you find it for $10? I'd upgrade for that amount too.

It was $9.99 at my local Rasputin Music store. I think online the cheapest I have seen it was like $12.

Re: John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 SE and Blu-ray: 2/3/09

Old thread but I'm new here and I must say the this movie "Carpenters P13" has got to be the worst transfer ever. Unless I have a bad copy the colors are all faded and the contrast is out of whack. It looks like they took and old 35mm negative and ported it over to blu-ray untouched.

Are you watching it on a 13" b&w Zenith? I just watched this a couple weeks ago and it looks phenomenal. Razor sharp image, incredible detail... I am exceedingly happy with the image.
