2008 Additions & Revisions

As is usually the case, there's been a few minor changes made to this year's challenge. They are due to your feedback taken from this thread and are the following:
• New this year is The "31 Films for 31 Days" List to encourage group discussion.
• Horror documentaries are still allowed, but the "fluff" taken from DVD supplemental material (making of, featurettes, behind the scenes, etc.) no longer count. Some legitimate examples include: "100 Years of Horror", "American Nightmare", "Fear in the Dark" and "Halloween: 25 Years of Terror".
• Pending your votes, a commentary rule change is a possibility.
• The Wilds Cards have been doubled to 6.

Yes, I realize everyone doesn't always agree on allowing commentaries, the 40-minute rule, the exclusion of TV shows, etc. But the fact of the matter is it's damn near impossible to satisfy everyone, that's the sole reason the feedback thread was created and your input was taken accordingly.

[REC] was a great movie. Iw as excited to see the remake "Quarantine," but after seeing [REC] I have a hard time believing they'll be able to top or even make a movie as good as this one was. Plus now I know what people meant when complaining that the trailer for "Quarantine" gives too much away.

Yeah, I'm pretty much the same way. I wish we had this challenge back then. I would have probably been in the Top 10 at least. In fact the year that I turned 30, I spent the first few days of one of my vacation weeks watching most of the Alien Quadrilogy.

the trailer does give too much away

including

Spoiler:
the very last shot of the victim being dragged into the darkness

word of note, anyone who doesn't want to be given too much detail about the plot, don't read Fango. Needless to say it pretty much negates [REC]'s little twist.

18. Le Chaudron Infernal * How could anyone not like Melies? I would say that Melies was easily the first special effect wizard in motion picture industry. He was able to do such remarkable things -- and all in camera! I wouldn't say that is his most wondrous work or anything like that, but it's nice to see something that is more horror rather than the fantasy, comedy stuff he is usually known for.

I agree. Looking to get that Melies boxset once I find a good deal on it.

This never gets old and is fresh each time that I watch it. I'm not sure whether to classify this as Sci-Fi or horror, so I'll use a wild card.

Superior movie to the sequel? I completely agree. And no need for a wildcard, it definitely counts as Horror.

This movie has always been a guilty pleasure for me, but a guilty pleasure that is validated by the film being truly freakin’ cool! Everything I need in a horror film is here, plus The Offspring cover The Ramones! I’ve had a lot of people watch this, and they all love it. I highly recommend it. And of course, Jessica Alba is always fun to watch. Love that angel costume...

20. Terrified (DVD - 1963 - 85 Min – B&W) *
"I’m your oldest friend…terror!"
Did Eli Roth direct this in a previous life? This is some good torture fluff. Not gratuitous torture, mind you, but the kind where you can see the fear in the victim’s eyes as the situation takes a turn for the worse. This isn’t too bad of a flick. I was entertained the entire time, and the Ken character (played by Rod Lauren) comes across a lot like James Dean. As far as a killer/terror film goes, this one serves it up quite nicely. And the scene where the killer’s identity was revealed played out well. I didn’t see it coming.

Looking forward to seeing Idle Hands again. And thanks for the Terrified description, I'll have to add that to my queue.

I know, after I saw [REC] I couldn't believe they gave that away in the trailer for "Quarantine." Now everyone who sees the movie isn't going to be shocked, and it's a shame.
Spoiler:
Seeing Angela get dragged away at the end was just heartbreaking, even though I knew it was going to happen because I put two and two together from seeing the trailer from "Quarantine." When I first saw the trailer, I didn't know that was a final shot, I just assumed it happened during a fight scene or something. Now I don't know what they're going to do with it, but if they did indeed use it as their final shot, they need to fire their marketing team.

Fango and Rue Morgue like to spoil movies. It's true. They should be shot.

Too late. :( Unfortunately I made that very mistake and was planning on including it in this challenge. Fango is a great horror publication, but it's probably in ones best interest to wait until after seeing the actual film before reading any of their articles because they've always been bad about spoilers.

And come to think of it, Tony Timpone has been guilty of the same a few times on FANGORIA Radio.

The Rue Morgue letters section is notorious for spoilers, and Rue Morgue gave away the endings of Hostel 2, Audition, and the MOH episode Pelts. I was pretty pissed when I read that. I love both the magazines, but I try to skip any article about anything I don't want spoiled for me.

I'm about a day behind in updating my list, just posted yesterday's watches.

I also wanted to take a moment to show my gratitude for this challenge and its participants. I've seen some great films, thanks to many of your comments/write-ups/recommendations. I watched the three shorts (from 1895, 1903, 1910 years) yesterday, and I was so amazed. I'm a movie lover, but stuff like that I wouldn't have looked for if it wasn't for you guys/gals. Feel free to read my take on them.

Well, off to more watching!

wlverinefactor 10-08-08 06:02 PM

Just a heads up but I watched Return to Sleepaway Camp just now and besides 2 amusing deaths (one w/ a bunkbed, one with a jeep) the film is perhaps the worst horror film I have ever seen.

In no way were the original worth viewing either (well, 1's ending was good).

I see talk of REC on here. Haven't seen it yet but do you mean the trailer for Quarantine ruins a twist in REC or is Quarantine a remake or what? I listened to a trailer at gamestop and it sounded pretty good.

Oh and personally I try and do my watching from home, my work is dead right now so I have the ipod, psp and most of the pc's have dvd players so depending on where I'm at I can always watch a film.

NoirFan 10-08-08 07:52 PM

I just watched The Abominable Dr. Phibes for the first time, and I must say I was quite impressed. Imaginative, ornate set pieces and a wonderful sense of composition are aided by an editing style that is almost abstract at times, helping make the film truly unique within the horror genre. It's hard to believe that this wonderfully inventive, strangely poetic film was released by drive-in schlock peddlers AIP.

You're in for more good times then, because the sequel is really good too.

AIP put out some good stuff amidst the schlock. They handled most of Vincent Price's best movies in the 60's, as well as introducing the US to some great Euro-horror (albeit in dubbed form).

IMO, this is one of the best made-for-tv horror movies of the 70s. For kids who grew up in that era, there are a couple of images that seem to repeatedly seer their way into memory - the Zuni doll from "Trilogy of Terror" and the little demons in this one. I recently rewatched this a couple of months ago, and I was surprised at how well it held up. The demons even looked decent, considering they were really midgets in costumes. Damn shame this doesn't have an official DVD release. Just curious Peepers ... why did you consider the ending poor? I thought it ended on an absolutely chilling note ...
Spoiler:
... with the demons dragging Sally down into the fireplace pit, and help arriving too late. And presumably Sally just disappears from the world, and the husband seals up the fireplace and moves away. And the last scene is a mirror of the first ... sometime later, a new family moves in. And you hear the whispering of the demons, as Sally's disembodies voice joins them. Finally, they break into a horrid laughter as the scene freezes and the credits roll. Damn ... that still sent a chill up my spine. Sure it's a downer, but that comes with the territory in horror. If there was a more conventional ending, I don't think this movie would've made the impact on so many people that it did.

If there's a criticism I have, it's that it seemed a bit contrived to have Sally in the house alone that last night. You'd think she saw (and believed) enough by that point to absolutely not spend a night alone in the house.

Well I just used my first wild card EVER. I've never used one any other year, since I have well over 100 horror movies in my collection. But I just bought the Charlie Brown box set and watched It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown which I haven't seen since I was a kid. And chose to use one of my wild cards for that.

I must ask: What movie is REC? (I dread when movies are referred to only by their initials because half the time I can't figure out what flick is being talked about.)

Numes 10-08-08 09:13 PM

Chad - You should change your countdown to how many days left until the challenge is over (i.e. get watching!!)... just a thought.

I wish my region free player didn't die. I really wanted to watch the 4 Phantasm movies, I have never seen them before.

clckworang 10-08-08 09:15 PM

All right, confession time: I have never seen a Hammer Studios film. I know, I know. I think it's because I have never been as drawn to the Dracula, Frankenstein thing. I've always gone a bit more for slashers. Anyway, I'm rectifying that in this challenge. I just got Curse of Frankenstein from Netlix and am excited to watch it.

But I was wondering: What do you all consider the top Hammer films? I want to try to get a good sampling this month, but it will be a good reference for me in the future as well.

Sure, it's only my fourth favorite Mel Brooks movie, but it's still a classic. Also, Teri Garr looked damn good in 1974.

Wow, it's only fourth? It's definitely my favorite although I can understand why Blazing Saddles tops most lists. What are the three Mel Brooks flicks you like better?

A few of my favorites are:

Brides of Dracula
Paranoiac
Curse of the Werewolf
Devil Rides Out
Night Creatures

and if you can find it Vampire Circus (I know, silly title) is top notch

Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs and History of the World. Although History of the World and Young Frankenstein could go either way. If I had wrote that yesterday I may have said third instead. I will say Young Frankenstein seems to have more heart than any other Mel Brooks movie. It's got a deeper story mixed in among the silly jokes.

As for Hammer films, I'm often a little on the fence with them. Sometimes they're just way too talky for me (I recall it taking over an hour for Frankenstein Created Woman to get going) but I've definetly ran into a few that I've liked. Gonna check out Brides of Dracula some time around next week.

That is the title. [REC] is short for Record, as in the label on the LED light on a video camera.

As to Hammer, I prefer the Frankenstein films over the Dracula ones. The Frankenstein films are actually about the doctor (the occasional monster tends to be kind of lame, but the films aren't about the monsters) while the Dracula films are like Godzilla films where they spend all their time on other characters and Dracula shows up for 10 minutes total each movie. This isn't always the case, but more often than not.

Oh, Vampire Circus is a masterpiece.

edwardnortonfan 10-09-08 06:59 AM

To answer the questions about [REC], it is the original movie upon which the new horror movie Quarantine is based. It's a Spanish horror flick and it's one of the best I've seen in years. The remake, Quarantine, looks good, but now that I've seen the original I realize that the trailer for Quarantine gives away most of the twists of the movie. I really hate it when trailers do that.

I'm enjoying reading everyone's comments here. If no one minds a shameless plug, the inclusion of the checklist inspired me to watch those early attempts at horror films "The execution of Mary, Queen of Scots" and "Frankenstein (1910)" and I wrote about the experience in my monthly column for the website Cinema Crazed, if anyone wants to read it: http://www.cinema-crazed.com/h-q/longwinded16.htm

Nice article! Small typo on the year of Shelley's novel, should be 1818.

Also, you give a lot of credit to Edison personally, but I'm not sure how personally involved he was with the films. It could have been wrong, but I read a couple times over the years that he was more the owner/financier, and not really involved in most of the films his studio produced.

Again, what I read could have been wrong. Great article, thanks for sharing!

wlverinefactor 10-09-08 08:39 AM

Eh.... she's in it no more than 3 minutes.

And yes the ending was seen coming from near the start. It's just so bad and not even in a good way.

As for the guy asking where we are seeing it, it's on-line... I can't mention where but it's so easy to watch media in your bedroom that anyone could search for it.

---

So, should I see REC before Quarantine then? I can't seem to find a copy and I'm amazed the remake is already coming out, wasn't this released this year?

Giles 10-09-08 09:14 AM

regarding [REC] - the UK 2-disc is the version to get, as for Quarentine it's coming out tomorrow - I'm gonna check it out, but know I'm not going to be impressed with the changes.

You are right. Not too much credit should actually go to Edison in this regard. He's not even the true inventor of the Edison motion picture camera! He came up with the concept, it was done in his labs, which means he owned the patent, which means that legally he invented it, but the actual work was done by a guy named William Kennedy Laurie Dickson.

Thank you film history class!

Anyway, if anyone is interested:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Kennedy_Dickson

And thanks to everyone for the Hammer recommendations. I did like Curse of Frankenstein, but it was weird seeing the monster played by Christopher Lee! I always knew he played this role and all the other classic movie monsters, but it was just weird after all the other things that I have now seen him in.

But anyway, I'm looking forward to more. How's the Hammer version of The Mummy? I still need a mummy movie for the checklist.

Is Vampire Circus one that I can import?

Edit to Add: It looks like German release is the best one followed by the UK. Anyone vouch for the quality?

Here's a quick spoiler free review of Return to Sleepaway Camp (sorry, it was well after 3am when I got done watching and I was tired).

The movie had such great potential what with having 3 of the original actors from the first film and the writer/director of the first one back as well. But, they spend half the film with this annoyingly bad fat actor kid who does nothing but yell at everyone. He never calms down whatsoever. He has an unhealthy obsession with frogs, doesn't seem to have any other clothes than the ones he wears throughout the movie. It doesn't seem like the writer/director even knew where he was going with this at all. I think he was trying too hard to come up with another surprise ending, but failed so bad it was ridiculous. It's embarassing to see Isaac Hayes in this movie, especially since he's in the movie for a collective of 3 minutes and then his character just disappears just like the fat kid. After half the movie, he just disappears, but believe me I'm not complaining. The fat kid was just so over the top, and annoying. I was very intrigued by this movie especially since Felissa Rose was coming back to play Angela, but the way they worked it out (which is exactly how I figured it was going to work from seeing the trailer) is sad. I heard that they were making a 5th film, but IF they are it better contain Angela a lot more, because the way they played it off was terrible. I'm glad I was able to see this for free instead of buying it like I was going to.

but were the death as over the top and plentiful as II and III, that was fun about the sequels they were just slay-athons.

As stated by wlverinefactor earlier there really are only 2 good deaths in the film. Some of the deaths like the deep fryer kill and a kill involving rats seemed too much like other kills in the series. I really think this film would have been so much better had they focused more on Angela and the others from the original film.

wlverinefactor 10-09-08 11:22 AM

I agree with you on Return to Sleep Away Camp. Not sure if I mentioned it here or on my movieblog but some of the deaths (including one of the better ones) feel to elaborate to have just pulled off on chance. Sure we shouldn't over think the idea, it's a horror film but it isn't like Jason or anyone sets up a giant chain of events that may or may not work within mere moments of it all being presented to them.

On a happier note I finished [REC] and it's easily the best horror film in 8 or so years. Just awesome. I was creeped out, I jumped, ect. The ending left a bit to be desired but all and all it worked well, solid acting and despite an obvious twist I loved it. I'll have the gf bring me back the region 2 dvd in January. I viewed the trailer for the remake and it ruins most of the best parts, too much is shown from the end so I'm hoping they have more to offer after the originals final scenes. I'll either see it tomorrow or pray it's on-line quickly...

Matthew Ackerly 10-09-08 12:12 PM

I watched Five across the Eyes last night.

Extremely low-budget, made for around 4000 dollars, with three digital cameras, which never leave the back seat of the van.

To say this was wild would be an understatement, the first 6 minutes you feel like your watching a ridiculous, student film, with atrocious acting, but then it begins to feel so real, its like you are right there with these girls.

It's not for everybody but people wanting to watch something different should give it a shot.

Lots of great Hammer titles to choose from. A good starting point would be:

Horror of Dracula
Brides of Dracula (my personal favorite)
Curse of Frankenstein

From there I would add The Mummy and the Frankenstein sequels....The quality of Hammer stuff begins to suffer in the early 70's, but there are still some worthwhile titles from that era......

My two other favorites are Kiss of the Vampire and the rip roaring kung fu gothic vampire story Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires.

Seriously.

Another fine film that has the look of a Hammer Film but isn't one is The Asphyx.
