So does DVDaf really not have any kind of import feature? I was going to dump my collection into it just for an online list now that I've transferred everything to my own offline database. I absolutely do not have the patience to sit there going one title at a time though.

Mikael79 10-14-08 09:14 PM

Every day I look at DVDSpot in hopes of seeing a "We were just kidding!! We're staying!" message, yet it doesn't happen. Why can't they just charge us $5 an account or sell the site to someone else, or anything other than shutting it down?

I hate DVDAF and the big problem I've always had with DVDProfiler is the inability to add items to my wishlist from work (unless it's now an option, and I just haven't seen it), so I'm really going to be lost without DVDSpot. :(

Trevor 10-14-08 10:48 PM

I'm sure their expenses were a lot more than $5 per person that would actually pay.

I hope it doesn't go down at midnight. I was hoping to do some final tuning, printing, and exporting of it tomorrow at work.

hilts 10-14-08 11:17 PM

Kind of makes you want to stay up waiting doesn't it? F5 until it's gone. Damn, I think I hear the warden coming...

kitkat 10-14-08 11:29 PM

I was browsing the refugee forum and I saw that someone had created a script to save all the data from your collection, not just what the regular export tool saves.

http://rapidshare.com/files/15193683...uller.jar.html

My problem is that I am using an old Mac and am running into some kind of error. I realize that it's almost zero hour, but I am hoping that I am posting this in time for a few people to save themselves. I am also hoping that some good samaritan out there might be willing to help me out saving my smallish sized one. If anyone sees this in time and can help me out, please send me a PM. Thanks!

(Link to the thread where this is being discussed. )

^ PM sent. PM me back pretty soon (I'll wait a while before going to bed) and I'll take care of it for you.

F5 until it's gone isn't as bad as the 100+ GB of bandwidth I just used creating an archive of the website. :)

Much like your work pulling all available titles in online sales and putting everything into a nice list, your work here is much appreciated!

I hope I didn't miss you, thanks so much! My problem is outdated java on an outdated OS. I've read through more of that thread since my initial post, and the thing requires java 1.5x.

I wish I had discovered this script sooner, but I hope it is at least able to help a few people out.

The statistics that tell you which Actor/Director/Producer is involved in the most. Stuff like that...Never noticed that for example Sam Jackson was so prominent in my collection.

I, too, was alerted to this person being featured heavily in my collection via DVD Spot. :)

Trevor 10-15-08 06:38 AM

He's #3 for me, behind Frank Welker and Christopher Lee.

Site is still up and working as of 0737 EST.

That java tool worked for me, pulled all pages to a 120 meg folder.

Still debating on what to do next, probably excel.

This is almost akin to sitting next to a dying person's bed waiting for the inevitable passing. DVDSpot, you will be greatly missed.

Snowmaker 10-15-08 07:13 AM

Too bad DVD Talk couldn't take it over or have a similar database section, since I'm sure most of the people that use(d) DVD Spot are also members here.

Numes 10-15-08 07:31 AM

The stats at DVDSpot were always a little skewed for me because I own 3 Hitchcock Box Sets, 3 James Bond Box Sets, and Every Star Trek Movie/TV show you can think of, so everything was always padded by those sheer amount of movies/shows. In addition, I keep DVDs in my collection lists (DVD Profiler and DVDSpot) that I have sold off or given away, so it double dipped every Star Trek movie and would have double dipped the James Bond movies if I upgrade to Blu-Ray.

I'd love to know exactly how much the site cost to run. That was a lot of bandwidth, so several thousand dollars a month wouldn't surprise me.

Love to know the income from the referral links to.

I almost hoping that it was a huge $ drain for them, because if it wasn't, the quick closure would piss me off even more.

Really surprised that they didn't try to make it profitable, by adding ads, and/or charging a fee.

Maybe I'll post this at the refugee site, someone has to have some answers or educated guesses to those questions.

Trevor 10-15-08 09:27 AM

It's gone. :(

Reality just set in when I tried to look at the site. It just makes no sense - that's all that I keep thinking about this whole mess.

It's just a website...it's not the end of the world.

So it's ok if they shut down DVD Talk next? ;)

DVD Spot might have been "just a website", but it was an incredibly-useful website that performed a needed task in a manner unequaled by any alternative. And its shutdown was not due to lack of merit, popularity or usefulness. It was corporate politics.

Darth Maher, your collection link in your sig doesn't work. Might wanna double-check it.

islandclaws 10-15-08 10:35 AM

"Cannot find server".

And with that, it's gone...

No, it's not the end of the world as Tarantino semi-threadcrappingly put it. It's just the end to one of the best cataloging sites on the net. The convenience of that site and it's varied statistics were great tools to help me keep track of what I owned, what exclusives I had, who my top actors/directors were and it also allowed me to see what films I owned by which actors simply by clicking their names. It was simple and FREE. I'll miss using it.

kitkat 10-15-08 11:09 AM

:(

I really liked that site. It was perfect for the way I like to keep track of things. I loved being able to track everything I watched, regardless of whether or not I owned it. It was also was especially handy for checking to see what episode of a TV series I was on, but I also found that feature interesting in general. There were just so many little things about that site that were great.

From lurking a little bit at the refugee forum, it sounds like a few people were able to salvage all or most of the database data. I'll keep my fingers crossed that some smart minds over there are able to come up with some kind of worthy successor.

RIP, DVD Spot.
