Another STAR WARS TRILOGY DVD Release (11/04/2008)
 

Lucasfilm is releasing both trilogies in their own 3-movie sets. 2 DVDs for each film. No idea yet if we'll FINALLY see anamorphic versions of the ORIGINAL (non-special edition) trilogy.

I just don't know how to react to this. I'm not surprised at a re-release. I would MAYBE consider a double-dip if the original trilogy is included in anamorphic, but even then, it might be too little too late now. Might just wait for the eventual Blu-ray release.

$5 says Clone Wars arrives on DVD/BD this day. This is just another attemp in cashing in. Nothing new from Lucas.

Typical for any studio. Nothing new.

Simple repackaging, if there was anything new worth of merit, we'd see a huge block of scrolling yellow text about it.

Interesting creature, this Lucas.

Its funny to note it takes forever for his flicks to come out on next-gen home entertainment products, but when they finally do they tend to flood the market to the point where you can't throw a rock without hitting some re-re-release of a collected series of movies somewhere.

Lucas rapes my wallet yet again.

This is nothing new, especially for the Lucas camp, if you recall all the VHS and laserdisc editions of Star Wars. The dvds actually still need to play catch-up to all those releases, then we have blu-ray...

I still haven't picked up any version of the original trilogy on DVD, yet somehow I have the prequels. I have no idea how or why that happened.

If I was able to customize my own release, though, I'd like to see a version which utilized the angle button (if that's what it's even called - I think I've only ever used it once), allowing you to switch back and forth between the original and tainted versions on the fly.

One reason I held off on purchasing any so far. I have Jedi that I found used for 5 bucks. Other than that I'll most likely not even pick up this one. I'll just wait until years down the line when they release it on bluray with all the extras. Which will probably mean waiting on since the first bluray release will probably be a crappy version with little extras.

I know I'll be tempted, but I'm still going to avoid this like the plague.

I bought the orginal trilogy, even though the lack of real extras was surprising. The only reason I bought the re-released trilogy in '06 was because I found the Best Buy Exclusive tin, and I thought it was really cool. But I'm not enough of the SW fan to spend any more on this series.

I bought the Star Wars Trilogy when it came out on Sept. 21, 2004 and I re-bought all three films individually when the 2-Disc Editions of the movies came out on Sept. 12, 2006. Considering I haven't even opened the 2-Disc ones; I won't be re-buying Star Wars on DVD three times. I already own it twice on DVD and once on VHS.

I'm going to be getting The Clone Wars on Blu-ray despite poor critical reaction, however. That would've been a good time for the BD of all the Star Wars movies to come out.

Sounds like repackaging to me. The specs for the prequel box mirror what has already been released (the "never-before-seen" extras on the TPM extras sound like the "never-before-seen" extras from seven years ago).

I don't have the original trilogy yet (by original I mean the untainted originals). Is that what this one is going to be?

Even better, he'll release them in HD DVD first, without announcing Blu Ray.

From the descriptions (prequel discs), this sounds like a repackaging of the existing releases for the holidays and probably to cross-promote with the inevitable Clone Wars release.

This is easily ignored by anyone who already has these.

That box art looks very similar to the art that Ric Easton made. (I'm using those for my current SW discs.)

I don't care to double-dip, especially since the discs contained are clearly what we already own. Having said that, I do kinda like the idea of the slipcases housing the individual releases. Not enough to buy them, of course, and I'm kind of surprised that they're even doing this. Not because it's another release of the same stuff, but because it seems...lackluster.

I think we were all surprised when 2007 (thirtieth anniversary of the film formerly known as "Star Wars") came and went without a comprehensive box set. I read at the time that the last round of re-issues hadn't sold well enough to convince Lucasfilm that there was much market demand for a comprehensive box set.

Let's review the "Star Wars" DVD releases, though:

Episode I (a couple years too late, by the way)
Episode II
Episodes I & II box set (collects both previous releases; most commonly found in Full Frame version)
Star Wars Trilogy (IV-VI SE's with DVD release added SFX alterations & 1 bonus disc)
Episode III
Star Wars Trilogy (IV-VI from earlier Trilogy box, but w/o bonus disc)
Episodes IV, V & VI double-disc releases (Disc 1 from earlier issues, Disc 2 containing non-anamorphic, 2.0 versions of theatrical release versions)

Of course, it should also be noted that for some inexplicable reason, all of these releases have had Full Frame variants. For a guy who professes to be obsessed with "artistic control" and "vision" and "pioneering, leading edge technology," this habit can only be construed as pandering for extra cash.

The art work looks great, and I'm surprised its taken this long for a prequel box set. But....if there has to be another DVD release why not all 6 together in 1 mega set?

These movies (Star Wars/Empire/Jedi) MUST hold the record for the number of releases to the home video market.

Agreed. Where are the Biggs scenes? There really is no excuse for continually re-releasing these without them.
