Chaplin (15th Anniversary Edition) - 10/14/08

Saw this posted at dvdactive:

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced a 15th Anniversary edition of Chaplin which stars Robert Downey Jr. The Richard Attenborough directed film will be available to own from the 14th October, and should retail at around $19.95. As well as a newly remastered anamorphic widescreen presentation, the disc will include a "Staring Into the Sunset" retrospective with cast and director Richard Attenborough, a "Chaplin the Hero" featurette on Charlie Chaplin's contributions to film, a "The Most Famous Man in the World" featurette on Chaplin's status as a pop culture icon, and the films theatrical trailer.

Arguably Robert Downey Jr.'s best performance to date.

It's too bad this isn't going to be released on Blu-ray. It's a movie I've wanted for a long time.

It would have been great to have had a commentary with Downey. Jr. and the director.
Still I'll be buying this. Very good movie. (And its got Milla Jovovich which means its a must for me.)

Finally! I can drop another non-anamorphic title out of my collection.

15th anniversary...for a movie from 1992. Am I missing the math on this one?

This is great news! Although I would love a commentary and a longer cut. It was rumored that the first cut of this movie was 4 hours long. I'd kill to see that version.

I've never seen this but I always had an interest in checking it out. Perhaps if I can find this for under $10 I'll blind buy it.

A 16:9 version has been available for years in the UK.

The math is Downey is hot now with IRON MAN and there will be those who will buy this to see his Oscar nod performance.

I've been waiting to pick this up on DVD. Blu-ray would be nice also but happy there's an upgrade coming.

Netflix is still listing this title as "unknown," as far as availability goes. Guess they didn't get the notice about the 15th Anniversary discs...

I forgot this was coming out til I saw it today at work. I almost bought it, but the back doesn't list it as anamorphic, so I wasn't sure if there was a point in upgrading. Looks like it is.

Re: Chaplin (15th Anniversary Edition) - 10/14/08

After I watched the BD version last night, I got to playing all of the extras and found the video picture was centered in the upper-left corner of the screen, utilizing only about 25% of the TV. Has anyone else noticed this when playing their copies? If not, then I'm sending it back to Amazon for a replacement. The movie itself played fine.

Update: I've noted on Bluray.com that many others have noted the same defect (i.e. postage stamp size picture in corner of screen) with the special featurettes. Even the reviewer was too lazy to watch them and include it in his review write-up. Back to Amazon.

Re: Chaplin (15th Anniversary Edition) - 10/14/08

It depends on players. Fox often has this problem that standard definition material plays back like that. It's a player issue, not a disc issue.

Okay...just never had it occur before with any other titles, Fox or other and should have been corrected.
