Speed Racer Complete Series in October
TVShowsOnDVD.com has an article on Speed Racer The Complete Series coming October 7th with an MSRP of only $49.98. I didn't think this would get a complete series release so sadly this is the first TV show I'll have to double dip on. Also, when I did hope that this would come out, I hoped it would be in either a steering wheel with the letters or the Mach 5. It is a Mach 5 but it's pretty disappointing looking. It looks like a cheap birthday cake.
http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Spe...llection/10046 There also appears to be a sixth bonus disc. |
I was just about to post this & got beaten to the punch. I'm hoping that Sixth Disc bit isn't just a typo.
I own the Limited Edition 5-Disc set that Speed Racer Enterprises released back in 2000 but would happily upgrade for this new set. |

Nice price. Thanks for the heads up.

Here is a picture of the Limited Edtion 5-Disc Set:
http://www.tvshowsondvd.net/graphics/covers3/1380_s.jpg And information can be found at TVShowsOnDVD I own the 5 individual releases, all of them with the cool bonus packaging (except Volume 2, which just has a slipcover) Volume 1 came in a standard DVD case, but limited numbers also had a rubber tire slipcover. Volume 2 supposedly came with a limited number of slipcovers that played the Speed Racer Theme Song, but mine just has a foil slipcover. Volume 3's limited edition included a tin steering wheel case. Volume 4 came with a limited edition Mach 5 Car. Volume 5 included a limited edition Mach 5 License Plate. Personally, I think all of those neat little extras are better than the five-disc set posted about above, simply because aside from the limited nature of the five-disc set, there doesn't appear to be anything to offer any extra incentive. Anyway, if the sale price isn't much (and I suspect there will be some tie-in deal with the release of the Speed Racer movie, although I could be wrong) I'll probably double-dip for the cool car packaging and sixth disc. |

http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/2689/1380scj6.jpg I'd say the LionsGate releases are better in terms of picture quality. The Speed Racer Enterprises release looks pretty "crunchy" at times. Also, there's extras on it that aren't available on the LionsGate releases. It's a pass for me. I hate the packaging, and the bonus disc is sparse. Details were posted today at tvshowsondvd.com

"Bonus features" suck on this one. I think with the crap packaging and HORRIBLE features (have you SEEN the new Speed Racer show?) this may be the very first DVDs I don't "upgrade". Kind of glad the extras aren't good. I prefer the cover art to the volumes compared to this mock Mach 5.

Has anybody ever released a set with the original Japanese audio? Were the epsiodes edited for American broadcasting?

While I like the idea of the Mach 5 case, it looks strange to me. It's too stubby, no fins or windshield..
If they fix those things then it'll be a must buy for me, even though I already own all the volumes. Otherwise I'm on the fence on this one. |
Only about $50 retail (you'll probably be able to get it for about $30-35 most places) for a six disc set with cool packaging makes this a done deal for me. I'll definetely pick it up.

The Mach 5 case is fugly!

Re: Speed Racer Complete Series in October
Speed Racer the complete series has been re-released on DVD and Blu-Ray for $20, and comes in a case that's the size of a single regular case. Here's a review of the Blu-Ray:
