Damn, I ordered this set through the DVDplanet sale. Hope it arrives OK, as I've had problems in the past with them shipping me damaged box sets.

Has anyone purchased this during the current DD sale? At $47.43, it's quite tempting. I suppose I could simply keep returning the defective sets to DD until they eventually sent me an undamaged one.

Yay! Already had the others so I just needed these. Great news, even if it's old news now, I'm just catching up

I don't own the Criterion version of Notorious and had no idea this new version was out. But I saw it in BB on my lunch break and bought it. After just now finding out about the playback issues, I'm not sure I want to open mine to find out.

Single disc should be fine.

As indicated by dex14, the playback issues pertains only to those on the box set and not the individual releases.

Actually, I purchased all three of the single releases (Notorious, Rebecca & Spellbound), and while all three play (for the most part), Notorious and Spellbound make loud noises in several of my players and computer. I haven't had the chance to sit through all three yet.

On other forums others have reported problems with the single releases too.

It came up because some blamed it all on the boxset messing up the discs. But (for what it's worth) some others are saying that there are fundamental problems with the discs. And so it goes.

I played the disc in my Panasonic BD player and it loaded fine. No noises. I played the first 15 minutes of the movie, no issues at all. I think my copy is okay.

I'll also add that I played one of the noisy discs in a Sony BD player and it played without the noise as well. I was thinking it may have been a disc mastering error, maybe something that newer players can handle better than older ones.

Strange thing is, I have two Sony DVD players...the newer one stalls out on Notorious at the layer change...but the older player (a sad SACD player) plays the disc just fine. It's not age alone.

So the single disc versions are defective too? Wow. MGM really needs to recall these. Is there a email campaign going on at all?

Just watched the single disc version of Notorious with no playback problems (on a PS3). I also got Spellbound and Rebecca, so hopefully those will play fine too.

EDIT: Rebecca played fine.

One problem I did have is that the insert is glued together for some reason. It's just a two page insert that opens normally and they decided to glue it together. Stupid.

Perhaps someone can enlighten me as I am at a loss as to why broken glass or broken mirrors are a cover element that thematically ties these (or other titles in the box set) together. Perhaps they're going after a 'shattered lives' idea but that a bit melodramatic for Hitchcock.

Admittedly I haven't seen The Lodger or Sabotage in a while. But the only significant broken glass that comes to mind is the broken wine bottle in Notorious.

At least with coffee cups (broken or otherwise) it might have been at least a theme (Young and Innocent, Spellbound, Notorious, perhaps others if I thought about it).

Really, I don't see any theme at all. I'm sure the art department whipped up some template that looked suspenseful and MGM/Fox just went with it. Looks a bit lazy. Wouldn't mind a little more personality to these covers.

They represent the shattered psyches of those who purchased the box set.

Re: Alfred Hitchcock Premiere Collection ---> 10/14/08

So did anyone here actually contact MGM? If so, what did they have to say? I purchased the set when it was on sale at DDDVD.com and have just now come to the realization that some of the discs do not work! Defective crap. I'm going to call them tomorrow. Hopefully they will stand behind their product.

Re: Alfred Hitchcock Premiere Collection ---> 10/14/08

I got lucky, I guess. All my discs work fine in all my different machines. And I'm still enjoying this set, actually delving into all of the amazing extras on each disc. The Lodger kicks so much ass, it's just amazing. I hope they do another one just like this.
