I watched Sabotage so far. No problems on that disc.

I checked all my discs today and they all started up OK (bought from Amazon). I didn't see anything wrong going through some chapter stops.

I put some of the other discs in and some make a weird noise when they load up. But they do seem to play fine as I go through the chapters.

Is it a really big problem if they do make that noise but do actually play?? What is everyone who bought this set doing in regards to returns/exchanges/keeping it?

The noise is distracting and usually precedes a seize up. DVD Planet issued me a return call tag and sent me out a new set right away (I've always been very happy with their service) and I'm hoping the problem will not reoccur. It's encouraging to see that some of you are not experiencing any trouble at all.

I'm going to try and watch the ones that make the noise soon. But as far as I could tell (just skipping through chapters) they play alright.

I'd suggest watching them completely, or atleast fast forward the latter half with full picture. I also thought some of my discs worked fine at first, as they don't become unplayable before an hour into the film, and sometimes they even work again if you skip ahead a chapter.

The quality control on the pressing of these discs is spectacularly poor.

I had no problems with Sabotage or Young and Innocent. However, my copy of Notorious is screwed. It freezes and glitches up at what I assume is the layer change -- around the 1:10:36 point. I tried it in my older Sony, and it seemed to work fine on that one. But the newer Sony just craps out at the layer change. This is VERY disappointing, especially considering that I have waited for years to own Notorious, after missing out on snatching up a Criterion before it went OOP.

The worst part is, I had Amazon send me a replacement set because my original copy of The Paradine Case was all scratched to hell. The replacement set has a better condition Paradine Case. But Notorious fails in the same way at the same point on both copies. This is a quality control issue. And it messes up my shit like I haven't seen since the Universal Classic Monsters Legacy Collection nightmare...

Fox, you suck.

So what exactly are we suppose to do as the consumer? Will Fox or MGM or whoever reissue the set and exchange through the distributor?? Because I obviously cant return it to the store since its been opened.

Not sure what you got it from but most retail stores run the same.

With a receipt you can exchange open/damaged/defective merchandise only for the same product.

If you have your receipt it should be an easy exchange.

But isn't it worth a shot? Surely there are some sets that are fine.

Yes there are. I have tested all 8 discs in my set, sampling the extra features and jumping from the first chapters to later ones. I was especially attentive to some of the specific trouble spots reported here and elsewhere. No problem as of yet.

Great news! I will skip the box and just get each one individually (yes, even the Criterions). This way I can keep my Lifeboat, no double dipping.

That's great news that the other films will be released separately!! I had pre-ordered this from Borders.com and was extremely dismayed by the packaging. The first disc I tried (Spellbound) skipped immediately after hitting play and was pretty badly damaged. I tried a few other discs which were ok, but ended up taking the set back last night. Because it was an online order, I received a gift card for the amount, and was very tempted to just get the 4 SE's which are out now. With the news that the other films will eventually be released, I think that's exactly what I'll do. I give them some points for originality, but I don't understand what was so hard about making the packaging easier for disc maintenance and for shelf storage. I'm still unsure about exactly where I would've put it had I kept it.

I'm a little upset I sold my original Lifeboat back a few months ago, but since it sounds like everything will work out eventually, I'll get over it soon I'm sure.

It's available very inexpensively anyway, so it shouldn't be too much of a burden to rebuy it.

I'm thrilled about the news of individual releases. I already have the Criterion box and am perfectly satisfied with those editions, so I didn't want to pay such a high price for the box just to get some mostly lesser Hitchcock films. Hopefully these will be reasonably-priced too.

I hadn't heard of this set until I was randomly watching TV and it was mentioned. I have all of the OOP Criterions and spent a ton to get them because Hitchcock is my favourite director, so I don't really need the complete set, especially if it has problems. I'll probably pick up a few of the single disc editions, though. Those are movies I either don't have yet, or only have on those cheap $5 discs.

So what's the general consensus at this point? Are the problems with the box set widespread enough that I should postpone buying it? What about the individually packaged titles -- how widespread are the reported problems with these?

It seems the packaging itself of the set has contributed to the problem, the "book" packaging has been shrinkwrapped so tight that the disc in the sleeves are bent out of shape. That's what's causing the vibrating discs for some people, and perhaps also the high error rates on the discs.

So, possibly, the problems aren't affecting the individual releases in keepcases.

I checked all my discs today, after having bought the set a few weeks ago at Costco. Though a few were mechanically noisy when they ran, they all seemed to play properly as I jumped through the chapters and watched some supplements. None showed any signs of damage to the disc surface, though.

How much was the set at Costco.

Has anyone had problem with noises with a slot loading device such as a Playstation 3?
