Breakfast Club / Sixteen Candles / Weird Science SE's??

These appear to OOP (again). Does anyone know if SE's are in the works or if Universal is going to re-release?

Boba Fett 05-04-08 10:47 PM

Universal stuff goes OOP quite a bit, but 9 times out of 10 gets reprinted quietly and shows back up in stock.

Maybe an HD? Although these movies arn't exactly screaming for the 1080i treatment (although throw in a directors commentary and the infamous deleted scenes from "breakfast club" and I'd soo tripple dip).

From what I understand, there are no extras (other than a possible commentary) for The Breakfast Club due to the fact that everything on tape that didnt make the final cut was destroyed.

Tenacious D 05-05-08 06:45 AM

Someone could make a nice documentary about the footage that was destroyed and the antics that happened on and off set during filming. I read an article in Entertainment Weekly a couple of years ago about the filming environment during The Breakfast Club and it was really interesting.

Cool, I was unaware of deleted scenes...now why are they infamous?

SI78 05-05-08 10:33 AM

Doesn't John Hughes claim to have the only copy of a 2.5 hour cut of this movie?

As people have said they are infamous because it is uncertain if they still exist, along with the fact that once filming was done no one has seen them since.

tylergfoster 05-05-08 02:08 PM

The chance of a director's commentary is very low, as Hughes had his older commentary pulled from the newer Ferris Bueller DVD because he didn't like the track, or he didn't like commentary, or something (too bad, it was a fine track). If he has the long cut, he might provide it, as being reclusive has nothing to do with that footage, but if there is an SE, it's more likely that cast will be the only real participants.

hotsexyboi 05-05-08 09:46 PM

I dont have any of those except 'Weird Science' on DVD and thats just the High School Reunion Collection edtion. But I would LOVE to see SE's of these awesome 80's flicks!

It's the one where Claire gets undressed in front of a (seemingly) catatonic Brian before getting in the pool.

Joel Goodsen 05-06-08 08:39 AM

I am still amazed that these films don't yet have a SE release.

I know I saw a thing on TV that was like that. I forgot what channel it was though.. Bravo or one of those. That is how I found out that they destroyed (burned I believe) whatever didnt make the final cut.

Gizmo 05-06-08 11:26 PM

I thought there have been numerous deleted scenes that appeared in the TBS and whatnot versions of the film?

John Hughes has been quoted as saying that he has the only copy of the 2 1/2 hour cut of the movie.

There's one I recall, with the kids trying to sneak past Vernon when he's at a vending machine.

The HighSchool Reunion editions of Weird Science, Breakfast Club, and Sixteen Candles were all suppose to originally be SE when they were first announced I believe in 2002? Then a few weeks before the release, the specs finally came out, and they were barebones, and the only upgrade from the first release was Anamorphic and Dolby Digital 5.1 I think. It is disappointing, because I would love to see present-day cast interviews with all these actors together again, as alot of us grew up with these guys, and it would be cool to see them now in the late-30's talking about films we all saw as teenagers.

Breakfast CLub is a definite buy for me because of the commentary. The other 2 I might pick up if the box set is cheap.

tylergfoster 05-27-08 11:43 AM

Why doesn't the Sixteen Candles DVD have the trailer? Hopefully this is remedied. Although it's good that the others have trailers.

Too bad they couldn't wrest Molly Ringwald for a commentary, apparently.

I was thinking the same thing. I already own the "High School Reunion" collection so I see no real reason to upgrade all 3 unless the price is right.

Of course, Blu-ray versions could be announced soon as well, I'm guessing.

BlueCC 05-27-08 12:05 PM

I never bought these before, but I'm definitely in for the Breakfast Club commentary.

Doughboy 05-27-08 12:20 PM

I've already bought The Breakfast Club on DVD and HD-DVD, so I don't see myself triple-dipping for just a commentary. Unless of course they release it on Blu-ray with a brand spanking new transfer and lossless audio.

My Other Self 05-27-08 12:23 PM

In for the Breakfast Club commentary. I wonder if we'll get a Blu-ray..

Lastdaysofrain 05-27-08 12:49 PM

Looks like there's a bunch of "I Love the 80s" editions of stuff like Ferris Buehler and Pretty in Pink on August 5th as well
