Real simple answer. If I enjoy a movie, I will buy the dvd. If I think I will enjoy a movie based on reviews by friends, other members here, or select critics, I will buy it. Out of about 600 titles, I have been burned exactly once.

I think after buying over 2300 DVDs I know my tastes pretty well at this point. I base my purchases off of word of mouth, reviews and cast/crew involved. I usually know at least <i>something</i> about most movies out there, so anything I'm unsure about I do a little research on before buying. But I'm pretty good at picking the right stuff by now.

Like me, perhaps your criteria for choosing a DVD is, "do I own it yet?". :)

For me, film is a continuing education. I'm a professional in the film business, and a total film buff. That, combined with also being an obsessive collector of things I like makes for a DVD habit so many of us talk about here. But I like to think that my collection has some kind of "pay-off", as there's no better way to understand movies than to watch them, and since my wife and I have very diverse interests, it makes for a nicely diverse collection.

As for what I'll buy, I try to follow the path my self-education takes me, and usually my wife follows along, able to share the interest. Right now, I'm getting into Vincente Minnelli films, due to seeing cool clips in "Martin Scorsese's Personal Journey through American Cinema" doc.

The other night I almost bought Terminator 2 and Daredevil from the $5 bin at wally world, but decided not to. Maybe im the weird one out, here. But what made me think about it is that I did enjoy watching the movies on cable. What made me not buy them is the question "Do I really like the movies enough to own on DVD and have in my collection".

I had the same thing happen to me today in Ross when I saw T3 for $4.99. Though I may get that one if its still there after work tomorrow. That seems to be my delima/debate with myself constantly.

Now if I saw it on TV and enjoyed watching it, then why dont I just give in and own the DVD, espically if the price is right?

This is why I value all the different answers ive read on here so far. It is such a frustrating pain in the ass when you are always 2nd guessing your own thoughts - I need to put a stop to it, lol.

Thats describes me too, even down to the number...which is strange....

I usually buy movies I like first off, special features plays a big part. Sometimes I'll buy a movie I've wanted to see for awhile simply because it's released as a special edition.

I do some blindbuying sometimes.

Thanks for saving me from typing out a full response. Everything quoted sans the "professional in the film business" and "wife" parts. And in addition to the doc noted, I also blind bought the majority of my foreign film collection based on Martin Scorsese's My Voyage To Italy, an excellent doc on Italian film history. As a result I tend to buy by director in bunches, this merges nicely with my collector propensities as I strive to own complete film careers of certain directors (Scorsese being my favorite).
