The dvdbeaver review makes this Diva release sound absolutely terrible. Looks like LionsGate was not up to the challenge of trying to Criterionize titles.

I take what DVDBeaver says with a grain of salt now; the condemning review they gave of Universal's release of Lost Highway, was completely wrong when it came to looking at the image quality.

Apparently DVDBeaver received their Diva dvd without English subtitles for the extras, including the commentary, featurettes and menus. Don't know if it's a random situation or not.

I have been looking for reviews on Diva:
In reading the exchanges between two reviewers (to add to dullboy's comments) apparently the DVD that Gary (DVD Beaver) reviewed is a version of the film that has the name "Maple" above the labels of Lion's Gate and Studio Canal (found on the back of the DVD cover, I think.) As dullboy mentioned the extras did not have English subtitles and Gary found this version had lot of "EE" throughout the film and he was not happy with the color palette. The other reviewer (whose disc, indicated did not have the name "Maple" on the cover like Jamie, the reviewer at this site, thought the disc was well done. So if there are two different types beware of the "Maple" version.

Yes, they only appear during the parts with non-English dialogue.

Mondays in the Sun (R1) in October
Lionsgate Home Entertainment have announced the Region 1 DVD release of Mondays in the Sun as part of The Meridian Collection on 21st October 2008 priced at $29.98 SRP. Javier Bardem stars in Fernando León de Aranoa’s insightful and heartbreaking drama. The film follows five unemployed shipyard workers who spend their days drinking in a local bar and riding the ferry back and forth, to no destination. Led by the cocky Santa (Javier Bardem), a lonely former ladies' man, the men may be down on their luck but still manage to encourage each other to search for work, love and the strength to hope for better days.

Presented in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85.1, this Meridian Collection DVD transfer was enhanced using the MTI Digital Restoration System to reduce the appearance of dirt, scratches and other film impurities. It includes deleted scenes, audio commentary, storyboard to scene comparisons and a making-of featurette.

Features include:
1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen
Spanish DD5.1 Surround
English and Spanish subtitles
Deleted scenes
Audio commentary with director Fernando Léon de Aranoa and Javier Bardem
Storyboard to scene comparisons
Making-of featurette
