Ideas for DVD storage

I'm getting an apartment with my girlfriend and finally have the space to store all 1,000 dvds I have. I plan on adding shelves to the wall, but it doesn't appear too many people have that set-up.

I wanted to know if anyone has added shelving to a wall area and any ideal brackets or shelving would suit something so massive. I plan on either adding seven 7-foot shelves or splitting them apart and placing them on two separate walls. Anyone have suggestions?

Thanks!

This won't answer your shelving question, but I recommend getting a cocktail ottoman. I have a lot of DVDs and when I started running out of room, or for ones that were oddly shaped, I bought a square ottoman. It's fake leather (looks real!) and it's about 4 feet by 4 feet. We use it as a coffee table because It's great to put your feet on. It also opens up and it's about 8 inches deep. I can fit hundreds of DVDs in there! It cost me about 200 bucks, but now it's my favorite piece of furniture.

I also have a tall turning unit that holds a lot of DVDs that I want to display, but anything else I can cram into the ottoman. I live in a 700 square foot condo, so I really need to save space.

No, you're using it as an ottoman. If you were using it as a coffee table, it would have cups and saucers on it. :P

I built something like what you are describing. I've posted pics in one of the HT threads but have no idea how far back.

...I thought maybe you were asking about how to save space.

Anyway, buddy of mine has expandable/collapsable shelving units about seven feet high. You can cram a lot of discs in there, and then when you want to pick one out, you turn the crank to expand the shelves.

Personally, I've got 1000+ DVDs in 4 storage books, that all in all take up about 4 square feet of space on the floor. All the cases were dumped, all the inserts packed into piles and stored away. I saved some of the box-set boxes; in fact, I used them to store the inserts. Don't need 'em or want 'em, but might want to sell 'em later.
