Re: Pinocchio: Platinum Edition ----> Spring 2009

Hi, Everybody.

I 'am myself a big fan of Disney,
but I cannot understand the big enthusiasm over this release.
It is less than average.

I've seen the HD screenshots, and I am very dissapointed.
Of course they look good, what animated feature wouldn't on Hi-Def,
but It could have looked so much better if not the altered color palette,
and totally manipulated picture.
I am sure it would fade comparing to
the original 1940 prints, where everything shines with wonderfull light
and shadows are so deep making a great suspence impresion.
To me it's like if all the soul and magic of this movie has been taken.
Such a shame.
Couldn't they at least include both transfers, the old one, and the new?

Here we can see the difference:
dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDReviews44/pinocchio_blu-ray.htm

Adding to that the fact that it is not presented in 1.37:1 ratio of the
original prints, doesn't add much of bonuses to the movie, and has
this sugar-like music video, that totally breaks the climat of it
(I wouldn't have to watch that one though)
it results as a package not really very attractive for me.
I honestly don't see much of a reason to improve my old dvd with a much more accurate transfer,
and it's a big shame - I've grown up on these cartoons (not me alone), it's like destroing a part of my childhood,
I was hoping I can get all Disney classics on Blu-Ray after the really succesfull (although a bit too bright and overprocessed) release of Sleeping Beauty.

That Is why I am asking myself why everybody is so into this release.
(Although I've already read some critical opinions, like for example
on amazon in a review.)

Just watch this tonight. Way better than the old version, color is much brighter and not the wash-up colors that the old version had. Too tired to watch the extras, maybe tomorrow. Bottom line

Re: Pinocchio: Platinum Edition ----> Spring 2009

I bought it since I own all the other Disney Platinum DVDs.

it has deleted scenes, art galleries, and the making of documentary so I don't think it is completely bare bones.

I have the Snow White from 2001 so I might not buy the version that comes out in October 2009.

I thought that was the definitive version.

they maybe should have included the old transfer.

Maybe Disney is trying to pull a George Lucas where they will release the original version in the future?

Maybe after 3 or 5 years

I saw a stack of Lady & The Tramp dvds at best buy and the dvd came out in 2006

Maybe it depends on what area you live and if the movie is popular in your area.

I doubt it will be so rare where you have to pay $60 at ebay.

Re: Pinocchio: Platinum Edition ----> Spring 2009

Hmmm. I have an opened copy of the previous release on DVD and just bought the Blu-ray. Are the colors that different? I was going to give away the old release, but maybe I should keep it?

Re: Pinocchio: Platinum Edition ----> Spring 2009

Critter posted about the color problem and I wonder if all the Disney Platinum DVDs have the altered color palette which are different from their original version of the movies?

maybe they did this to please the youngsters?

It's been a LONG time since I watched Pinocchio and damn, people complain about The Black Cauldron being a dark Disney film.

Re: Pinocchio: Platinum Edition ----> Spring 2009

I had a $10 Digital Coupon from Best Buy that I got as a result of them cancelling a "backordered" monitor that I ordered, basically as the result of a price error. (22" Acer for $50... some people managed to do in-store pick-up before it was cancelled, bastards.)

Anyway, I debated between using it on either "Role Models" or "Pinocchio," and I ended up using it on the latter, since Disney DVDs never go on sale and I'm sure I'll be able to find "Role Models" for under $10 within a couple of months. So I ended up picking up "Pinnochio" for $6.99. Good deal.

DISNEY AT IT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The 2009 Platinum Edition omits a single line of dialog: Jiminy Cricket's reassuring "Right!" to Pinocchio's utterance of his name during the song "Give a Little Whistle". Even the subtitles and captions omit this line as well. Past releases have included this line of dialog, however.
Anyone know whats up with this?>

That line was the only reason I was picking up this release. I guess I'll have to check other regions!

It's real easy to snicker (pun intended) at posters that point out these things but why isn't the target of your sarcasm the so-called professionals (i.e., Disney) who mucked this up?

Re: Pinocchio: Platinum Edition ----> Spring 2009

I just opened and watched my Pinocchio Blu-Ray. After receiving an email saying Disney was offering double rewards this weekend, I wanted to enter my code today. I looked inside the booklet and everywhere on the package inside and out... and I couldn't find a Movie Rewards code anywhere.

Could someone please tell me where I'm supposed to find it or is it as I fear that Disney left the rewards insert out of mine and kindly deprived me of 250 (125 x 2) points? There's no way I'm going to cut my UPCs to get something I should've gotten in the first place, plus I'd only get 125 points by the time they got around to it.

Re: Pinocchio: Platinum Edition ----> Spring 2009

The only thing about the blu-ray that bugs me is that the picture is windowboxed into a small square in the center of the screen....if you watch on a 4:3 tv. If you have a widescreen tv, though, the picture will go completely from the top to the bottom, with the black bars on the sides. The included regular dvd version does entirely fill a 4:3 tv. Don't really like the scroll work bars that's an option called DisneyView. It's for people that want to fill up their entire widescreen.

Re: Pinocchio: Platinum Edition ----> Spring 2009

I noticed the missing dialogue too, even on the Mono track on the R1 - what was up with that?! Not only is the "Right!" line omitted, but Jiminy's "Look out, Pinoke!" when he is about to fall off the table is missing too. I'm guessing it's a cock up by the restoration team, ever heard of quality control?!?
I still have the 2003 UK SE which has those lines. I think that release has a somewhat warmer palette, though the 70th AE is a superb restoration job. Loved the movie.
Forgot how dark it was though I mean, DAMN - Lampwick's transformation scene is truly scary

Re: Pinocchio: Platinum Edition ----> Spring 2009

I really like the darker edge that some of the earlier Disney has! Look at the actions of the Wicked Queen ( who irritatingly these days mostly gets referred to as the Evil Queen !! ) I'm sure I've read that in the UK , because of the actions of the said Queen and her alter ego The Witch Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs got an H certificate for Horror in the late 1930s in some borough or other ( back in the days when each major City had it's own licensing department which was allowed to dole out certificates for unsuitable movies ! )

I am so looking forward to seeing the quality of the restoration job of Snow White when the Blu Ray comes out on October 6th 2009 , I DO hope that they will have restored the Boil Cauldron Boil sequence where the Witch/Peddler Woman stirs the Poison Brew with a giant bone in her great cauldron! Because on the 2001 Platinum Edition DVD it didn't look so crisp!
