I'm no Lucas hater by any means, but I think the man has an obsession with episodic structure that may be unhealthy. The reason I think his revisionism has more to do with the "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark" thing is because I remember just before DVD took over, the last big VHS release of the trilogy actually had these titles on the spines:

"The Complete Adventures of Indiana Jones Episode 34: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom"

"The Complete Adventures of Indiana Jones Episode 35: Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark"

"The Complete Adventures of Indiana Jones Episode 36: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade"

And obviously the Young Indiana Jones series became episodes 1-33. I mean, if this isn't some illness on his part, then I don't know what's going on. Thankfully they didn't import those full titles to the DVDs.
Technically if you want to watch theme in chronological order you'd follow the 'episode format' since ToD is set earlier than RotLA

Well, yeah, but retroactively labeling the theatrical films as "episodes" after the tv series is pretty dumb.

Renaming it wasn't necessary. Does anyone actually put "The Return of the King" before "The Two Towers" because R comes before T?

Yeah, but aren't those films officially titled "The Lord of the Rings: The So-and-So"? So they're all next to each other on the retail shelf, anyway.

And that's the main reason I had always heard for the retitling with the '99 VHS releases: To make Raiders easier to find at retail--or at least for all three films to be shelved together.

I don't like it (and I've had a custom "Raiders" DVD cover for years), but I can see why they did it.

What I really want in an Indy release is those documentaries made when the films were shot.

Since they are not there, I see no reason to buy these films in standard def.

Yeah, i'd love to see the original doc's from there release. I remember watching a doc on tv many years ago showing all the stunt work on raiders'. Same goes for a nice star wars set as well. We can all hope maybe one day, i guess!

If you ask Lucas, those documentaries don't exist anymore, the special editions are the only documentaries now. He can change them as he sees fit.

I don't hate Lucas and in fact appreciate him for what he has created, but he is quite a strange character. He just loves to tinker.

The thing I don't get about him is he seems to have some desire to not give the fans what they fully want. I realize he has a demanding fanbase, but you throw in some of these old docs and you're a hero. And don't get me wrong, the docs on both Indy and Star Wars were excellent, they were really well done, but there's still a place for that old stuff.

George has always been like that guy next door who is always working on the car in his garage, but never quite finished with it.

The problem is, I sometimes think if George had his way he'd take a Ferrari and end up with "The Homer" from that classic Simpsons episode!

That's preety craptacular. The only reason I'd re-buy the trilogy is if it goes to blu ray or has Spielberg and Lucas doing a commentary on all three.

Lucasfilm's Steve Sansweet was at the Wizard World Convention on Sunday. He said the Indiana Jones box set would have 30 hours of all new bonus features that includes a new documentary on Lucas and Spielberg.

He said Young Indy would have over 30 hours and this set would have 30 hours.

The artwork is good. I like that they are using the original artwork instead of creating some craptacular new artwork. I do wish they had used the original Raiders poster though. Oh well. I have my original to look at.

That's mathematically-impossible for the "new" Indy film discs, given that you can only fit about 3.5 hours of content on a single DVD-9 before serious compression problems arise.

He must be counting each foreign language track as content the way they often include DVD commentaries in their time estimates

Yeah, I'll be waiting for the eventual (probably 2009) BD release.

I video taped the "event" and wish I had the equiptment to post on YouTube. I watched the Indian Jones discussion over before posting...I can't imagine they'd have that much footage....so we'll see.

I'm sure you did a fine job taping the event. The thing is, it doesn't matter. There's no way to fit 30 hours of extra content over 3 bonus discs. Not even close. More like a third of that, and probably less.

I think this is the Best Buy disc. The case was made by a friend.
