It's the 25th Anniversary of "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence"!!!

... and it's still not out on R1 DVD.

It has been released in other regions with some great-sounding features. But still nothing for the U.S.

Am I the only one out there that is mourning the absence of this movie from the U.S. DVD market?

And wouldn't the 25th anniversary of the film justify (finally) the release of this long-lost gem?

As a big New Wave music fan, this is an important film in that genre's history as it has both Ryuichi Sakamoto from the legendary group Yellow Magic Orchestra (who also did the score), as well as David Bowie -- both at the peak of their New Wave success. It also happens to be a good movie.

And yes, it's ridiculous that it isn't out here.

I'm fairly confident that last year Criterion announced (in a press release) that they would be releasing this at some point along with some other films like "Insignificance", "The Hit", and "The Last Emperor".

Edit: There's a link to the press release on Image Entertainment's website. Since I can't seem to directly link to it, just look for the April 11, 2007 article from here:
