Did the remastered single disc edition of THE MATRIX ever come out?
I know that it was in the box, but that was years ago...

No and probably will not since the old single disc version is still in print.

Actually, there were plans for an indvidual release of the remastered Matrix. It was even listed on Amazon.com when at the last minute, it was cancelled. |
What exactly is "remastered" about it?

It's an all new encode, it's been re-tinted to match the other two films (Matrix-land is more green, etc) and there's a whole lot less compression artifacting. It's pretty smooth looking.
