Avoid the latest release. It's pan-and-scan. Your best bet is the 2-disc AB limited edition, which can still be had online I'm pretty sure.
|
If youn can, try to track down this version from Divimax. It's a restored director's cut and features a commentary by Michael Mann.
http://www.amazon.com/Manhunter-Rest...0103536&sr=1-6 It's currently out of print, but I'm sure you can find it on Ebay. |
so is the one on top the original first press?
|
Here is the AB Boxset:

Ok so everyone agrees the limited is the best.
But out of two the newly rereleased film only or the first issue(which from what I can tell is exactly the limited with the theatrical only cut)which should I get? |
The problem with the Anchor Bay 2-disc set is that the Director's Cut extended version is cropped to a widescreen picture from a pan and scan version of the film, so image is cropped severely from all 4 sides of the picture. It is truely worthless. Also, the theatrical cut is missing a few lines from the original release. If you can find the Divimax release of the extended cut,it is still missing the few lines of dialogue, but it is in proper anamorphic widescreen. There is a new anamorphic widescreen version of the theatrical cut that was part of the Hanibal Lector box and it has the complete theatrical cut with the missing dialogue restored. It is the second from the bottom on RedNowGreen's post. Hope that helps,

The Divimax release is the only one I would want to own.

I say get the best R1 release then get the UK R2 2-disc SE to go along with it. I bought it on CDWOW a few months ago. It includes the theatricial version, the director's cut, an audio commentary (by Michael Mann, on the director's cut version), and the rest of the extras from the best R1 releases. You can still buy it at CDWOW for just $7.95. If you're region free (click here to see if there's a code for your player to make it region free) then it's the one to get in my eyes.

despite lack of extras, the Japanese with DTS is the best one, as it has the true cinema cut. http://website.lineone.net/~manhunte...japandvd00.jpg I guess that the this one does as well: http://website.lineone.net/~manhunte...sdvd200702.jpghttp://website.lineone.net/~manhunte...sdvd200701.jpg I also have the UK 2-disc SE, but just for the extras. |
Latin Spanish? Curious.

I think Ill just wait until the price of this one drops! This was my main choice from the beggining but I found the original for 6.99 at Half Price Books. |
Re: Manhunter?
Sorry for the thread necro, but most of the pictures in this thread seem to have "expired". Which cover should I look for to get a 16x9 version of the true theatrical cut?
thanks |

Re: Manhunter?
Sorry, I was specifically asking about the DVD because I have decided against the Blu since I want to keep my Anchor Bay 2 disc LE for the physical extras. I also have the AB Divimax release and I intend on finding a 4 disc case to put them all in as a mega set.
thanks |
Re: Manhunter?
Pretty sure the only way to get the actual theatrical version in OAR (at least in the US) is on Blu-ray, either the already released MGM barebones or the upcoming Shout special edition. There was an MGM DVD with the theatrical version, but it was full screen.
EDIT: I was going by DVD Compare, but it sounds above like MGM's DVD was OAR? Although the DVDTalk review mentions it being full screen, so MGM released different DVDs? |

There was supposedly a multipack with Lambs and Hannibal that had the right version, and then it was given a single release, but it's hard to pin down. |
Re: Manhunter?
From what I can find, MGM released a full-screen edition in 2004, then a WS edition in 2007. They may also have repackaged it in 2013.
The page from 2010 has a comparison of 3 DVD versions, one of which is a WS MGM version: http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/MAN...tills/id/11547 This page has a comparison of 4 DVD versions, although it doesn't specify the aspect ratios: http://billypetersen.com/store/manhunter-dvd-info/ Best Buy's details for the 2007 MGM DVD says it's "Enhanced Widescreen for 16x9 TV" http://www.bestbuy.com/site/manhunte...&skuId=2093046 |

Once I grab that, all I need to find is a four disc, double wide case that will also hold the printed materials from the Anchor Bay LE set. |
