Can the cold damage DVDS?

Hey guys, sorry, I looked around and couldn't find anything on this. Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong part of the forums!

My Grandmother just brought me over the "Blade Runner" briefcase for Christmas and it seemed pretty cold when she brought it in. She visited a few other people beforehand and I think she left the DVD in her car. I was just wondering if I have anything to worry about in regards to the cold damaging the discs. They seem fine, but I don't know anything about this stuff.

Thanks guys!

Plastic can be a bit more brittle at colder temperatures, but once it's at room temperature, there should be no long term effects. In either case, I'd be more concerned about the plastic briefcase than the DVDs themselves, which are made of pretty sturdy stuff.

Keep in mind that the trucks and containers that DVDs are shipped to stores or direct to your house in are not climate-controlled either, so they likely were that cold at some point before they were bought as well.

This question has been asked before, along with it's associated question about heat:

I agree with what Jay said. Just make sure the discs warm up before you try to play them so that condensation doesn't form on them while they're in the player.

Due to a move and some other circumstances beyond my control I had DVDs in storage for years through all sorts of weather, from cold of winter to the heat of summer and once I had them at my new place I let them climate a few days and now over 10 years later not one of those have shown any sort of problems.

Giving thanks for helpful information is always appreciated. :) Plus, the info given in still pertinent, and the bump prompted DouglasRobert to add his own experience to the thread.
