Which language do you watch The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly in?
 

Having just picked up the Leone Anthology, I am blown away to find the film was originally in Italian. I think I didn't notice, because the dubbing of the three main characters are by those actors. And yet, I'm not sure...

Is the dialogue by the English-speaking actors spoken in English, or is Italian the on-set dialogue? It looks to me like the English actors are speaking English, or at least, their mouths match up. IMDb says the original language was Italian though...man I'm confused.

I can't believe I never noticed this before, but it's been a few years since I watched the movie and that was only my second time watching it.

English but the dubbing is totally out of sync with the lip movement.

There's no real thing as the original language for this film and many spaghetti westerns. They were shot with no sound, and the actors spoke whatever language was native to them. The film was a spanish, american, and italian production. The reason they shot like that because they knew they would dub the film into many different languages and most of the sound recorded would be unuseable anyway.

When they dubbed films they came up with dialogue that would match the actors lip movements. For Eastwood and the other americans, since they spoke english on the set, it was easy to dub themselves.

If your native tongue is English, watch it in English. If Italian, then Italian.

On a side note, Django is better watched in Italian.

From IMDB: The three principal actors are the only ones who speak actual English in the film: Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, Eli Wallach, with the exceptions of Al Mulock (the one-armed man) and John Bartha (the sheriff). Everyone else in the film is really speaking their native language, mostly Italian and Spanish, and was later dubbed into English.

I watch it in English.

I always wondered why the dubbing seemed so off time, thanks for the info.

Regardless these movies are classics and I could care less.

I enjoy the mandarin dub.

It's too bad they didn't have sound. I imagine had the film had sound we could theoretically have a partially subtitled version in several languages.

I have to say I kinda like the english voices they give to the non-english speaking characters. They sound so lovably...rugged.

This topic reminds me of when I watched Spaghetti Westerns and Shaw Bros Kung-fu films as a kid - I always thought that the way they all spoke was normal. Every Saturday morning, watching Shaw Bros, I remember thinking to myself "wow, for a Chinese movie, all these actors speak pretty damn good english!" And I also remember associating the two genres - Westerns and Shaw Bros kung-fu films - because they both spoke in a similar style and had the same audio synch style (the dialogue being louder or separate from the action). The only way I can watch these two old school genre films today, being aware if they are dubbed/or the original language not provided on the DVD, I just accept them as being like live-action cartoons. Then the dubbing doesn't bug me as much.

Leone is not truly appreciated unless it is presented in the original Klingon.

I was jazzed when I first heard that the SE included the Italian track. So I checked the track out only to find the Confederate (Amputee) Vet is still saying his lines in a different language!

Oh, and I still perfer to watch the movie in English because Clint's voice in simply irreplaceable.

But I agree w/ Drop on Django. I only watch that movie in Italian.

Great box set imo. It would be nice to have it in bluray sometime.

I resisted buying it, I thought I wanted the individuals. However since it came out I became more and more concerned about shelf space and I decided to just get the box. I am glad I did, while the picture on the back makes it look kind of bland, the invidual cover-arts on the back of the digipak foldout is really nice looking in my opinion.

Actually a friend of friend told me that the studio had assigned him and his team to do a 1920x1080 transfer of this movie. So it's not unlikely that we'll see something in the future.

Just to clarify, this isn't something he does in his basement, It's his work. :)

English. Certain films for me, such as Japanese kaiju flicks and spaghetti westerns, should be watched in English dubs. There's a familiar feeling you get when watching these dubbed, probably since many of them were dubbed by the same English actors.

I read somewhere that Clint's Italian voice was provided by the guy who played Morton in Once Upon a Time in the West, can anyone confirm this?

Agreed. Also add Eli Wallach's and Lee Van Cleef's voices as well. I own a bunch of other Italian westerns; I prefer to listen to those in Italian.
