Party of Five-time to give up?
This is one of my favorite shows of all time and I gobbled up the first 2 seasons on the day that they were released, but it's been a long time with no sign of a season 3 and a lot of things that make me worry there never will be.
I've heard rumors that there were bad sales. I've heard they'd already put together special features and had season 2 ready to go around the same time as season 1, so that it wasn't a real sign of the studio's desire to keep the seasons coming but because they had it ready to go and just went ahead and released it. I've been lucky enough to never start buying a tv series on dvd that stopped coming out before all the seasons came out, but I'm thinking my luck has finally run out. Has anyone heard anything or have any gut feeling as whether this show is doomed to not get a complete release of all the seasons? Because as much as I love the show, I don't have a desire to only own 2 seasons and if they are done releasing them (or the wait might still be years and years just for season 3), I'd probably just rather sell them off to someone on Amazon who'd just be happy with those 2 seasons and spend my money on other things and try and just forget about this major disappointment. Thanks, in advance, for any comments or input about this. |
I believe they've given up on Party Of Five, for the time being anyway.
I hate it when shows I enjoy don't get released further due to sales. For the umpteenth time I've mentioned this, I'm pissed at Universal for not releasing Seasons 2 & 3 of American Dreams. |

It seems bleak, but also keep in mind that while companies give up on properties, there are smaller ones out there that put out the rest. Look at Shout Factory and BCI Eclipse. They managed to put out a lot of esoteric shows (Swamp Thing: The Series and Wanted: Dead or Alive), so the market for them is still there. So I wouldn't give up hope, but I'd considering writing some nice letters to show interest.

Never give up, never surrender!!!
(I too want the rest of Party Of Five, after buying season 1 and 2 on their first days of release....maybe if they put a bigger picture of Matthew Fox's face on the box and released it same time as a LOST season they'd get better results? Or maybe bigger pics of JLH's "assets" and release same day as new Ghost Whisperer seasons?) |
Twin Peaks called. They want a word with you.

And, about the mention of Matthew Fox, that was one of many things that perplexes me about how poorly these sets must have sold for them to stop. First, you had the hard-core fans that watched the show when it was on and even those that just joined when the show won an Emmy and people finally realized there was a really good show that they weren't watching. But then there is the appeal of the main cast. First, even the women that I know who are into Sawyer-like guys, proudly admit their fondness for Matthew Fox too. You'd think this would spark some additional interest in PO5. Then you have Lacey Chabert. It seems over the last few years, maybe after Mean Girls, that I've noticed a lot of guys seem to really think she's the cat's meow, despite the fact that she doesn't seem to appear in much. You'd think those guys might be interested, just as fans, in seeing her get her start towards being their sexual fantasy, back when she was just an incredibly adorable little girl. Then you have Neve Campbell. Her movie career seems to have kind of fizzled, but I still think she's a respected and working actress with name recognition, a lot of talent and she's not exactly difficult to look at and I had a total crush on her during the entire run. I'm not sure Scott Wolf brings a lot of fans now, other than those who still want to be amazed that he doesn't seem to have aged a single day since the show wrapped. JLH doesn't do anything for me now, but she too seems to have a lot of very loyal fans. Why wouldn't they want this? They'll buy Ghost Whisperer, which I've never seen and don't intend to see, and talking about her assets, they were SO much better and she was SO much hotter back on Party of Five. There were also tons of really good guest stars and actors who went on to do bigger and better things. Maybe I'm blinded by my love of the show, but it doesn't seem like it would be a total dog in sales like I've heard it was. So, with all of that going for it and with it having been a terrific show to boot, where you actually get to see Charlie survive "the good kind of cancer" (If Larry David is referencing your show, that's a pretty good compliment), I'm at a loss of why this show is over and done with as far a future releases go. As someone else mentioned, while I'd never want to own a show where they stopped releasing the seasons before the final season, it's particulary difficult for dramas. I want to be able to "finish the book" and not just keep re-reading the first several chapters. It's just not enjoyable to watch it and then have to stop the entire story after the final episode of season 2 when there was so much more. Oh well, I guess that I learned that I'm lucky that it's the first time that it's happened to me. But it doesn't make me feel any better. |
Does anyone know what to make of this release and the company doing the selling?
Is it good quality import, good quality bootlegs, bad quality imports, bad quality bootlegs...complete and total scam? The price certainly suggests scam, but I've seen stranger things, so I thought it better to ask than to simply ignore the possiblity that it could be for real. Any help from someone who knows about this site would be appreciated. Thanks. Party of Five Seasons 1-6 All 142 episodes 37 DVDs. Regular Price $389.99 Our Price $98.99 Mod note: Link to bootleg site removed |
Bootleg. Stay away.
From the site: Region Code: 0 (Region-Free - Plays Worldwide) DVD Format: Format-Free DVD-R (Plays in both PAL and NTSC DVD players) |
Is there any chance that some of these abandoned shows will be resumed if the writer strike lasts for an extended period? If they start running out of new content to release then getting less revenue from some of these titles would still beat no revenue.

I've given up on seeing the third (and final) season of Once and Again. :(
And that's the season with the Misha Barton-Evan Rachel Wood girl-girl action! |

TV shows are strange beasts. Some shows that you can't picture anyone ever buying come out in no time whatsoever... then you have stuff like NYPD Blue, which has 2 seasons come out in 2003... then a huge gap... then 2 seasons come out in 2006... then a huge gap. |
I would hold out. Like someone else said...there was a large gap between seasons one and two. The same thing happened with Mad About You....HUGE gap between seasons two and three, and I'm starting to think they're done with that, too.
I would hold onto the two seasons though. First of all, it's better to have something, than nothing at all. Second of all, if they announce season 3 down the road, you're going to have to repurchase seasons one and two. There have been shows out there that they said they had no plans to ever release, and they came out anyway. BTW, you're lucky this is the only show you own that they did this to. I own about 18 shows that I've basically given up hope on. :( |
Errgh, don't even get me started on this crap. NYPD especially. Yeah, like it isn't or wasn't a popular show. If enough time passes, you get different packaging, integrated season packaging and the slim-disc treatment.

This situation is really annoying. The studios should just announce when they're not going to release any more sets, so people don't get their hopes up waiting forever. Still waiting for more Fantasy Island seasons.

With the problems this show has had and with sales being talked about as a huge problem and with more mainstream popular shows like Mad About You and NYPD Blue having issues, I'm definately selling mine. If they do release them all, I'll probably be a grandfather by the time season 6 comes out.
And I'm sure not going to worry about rebuying them, since that probably won't be an issue in the year 2030 when they finally get the last one out, when I'll be able to push a button on my remote control and get any show from any season on demand, in HD in my house. What a shame. This is a great show and has a lot of reasons other than my opinion of it being great for it to have sold well enough to get all 6 seasons out in 3 years total. Now, I'm going to turn my sulking to not being able to get Ed on dvd yet. This business is pure madness. |
I feel your pain. Although I've never been into Party of 5, I had to wait nearly 6 years for Twin Peaks Season 2 to come to DVD. Finally this year, all the waiting paid off. Not only did we get S2, we also got a complete series set (though I probably won't be getting that).
So I'd guess that eventually you'll get more Po5... |
