I used to have a copy of that movie I made off of cable. I knew most of the dialogue by heart. I wore out the tape out and it broke. When I finally got a DVD player its was one of the first movies I ever bought. My family and friends think that I am nuts for liking this movie.

Back on topic: I buy just about every movie I remember seeing. Sometimes it doesnt work out so well though. A few movies I thought were great when I was 10-12 just don't make the cut now.

The movies I saw as a kid or teenager at the theater are now without a doubt some of my favourite DVD's.
Films like Jaws, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Superman 1 + 2, The Godfather 1 + 2 ,The Beyond, The Road Warrior, The Thing, great memories from all, and oh, how wonderful they still are.

I try to limit myself to the ones I know I will watch again and that are fairly good quality movies (I've gone back and watched so many VHS tapes of movies I used to love and was bored out of my mind! I would never buy DVDs of those.) Ones I did buy on DVD include:

I was a kid in the 70's and frequently feel geriatric and irrelevant here

we got HBO in the mid 70s, when I was still under 10, and a lot of these films made a huge impression on me and were the spark of a lifelong passion

1. "Groovie Goolies" TV Series...the first one i thought of was i remembered bits and pieces and had no idea where it came from. then it came out on dvd and it all came flooding back. "Where ya going little ghoul" was all i ever remembered. haven't watched it yet, but love that i now own it.

2. "The Beast Within"...saw this late on cable at my dad's house who had HBO and it scared the shit out of me. i love it to this day.

3. "Star Wars" Trilogy of course.

Wow!

I actually bought and watched both the '76 King Kong and Prophecy (it's not the one with Walken kids, this is about a murderous mutant bear, it's awesome) in the last week ! It was the first time I saw Prophecy in it's original aspect ratio, I frickin loved the movie even more now, it looked and sounded terrific, what a great disc to own.

King Kong I re-bought as a special edition DVD, including a 25 minute making of and deleted scenes. (!) Huge fan of this film, great memories of seeing that on the big screen, you can keep the Jackson version.
Man, did Jessica Lange look good in this film or what ?

"Darby O'Gill & the Little People," "Bambi," "Dumbo," and "Jungle Book" for things I liked as a kid that were kid fare. "Help!" and "To Sir, With Love" for movies I watched on TV whenever they were on when I was under 12. They weren't standard kid fare, but have stayed with me, and I own them in either DVD or VHS form. I can think of more things that I liked from age 12 onwards, but I don't think those count as pure kid things, because you try to start thinking older by that age, anyways.

Willy Wonka, Help! (Beatles), Dumbo, Star Wars ('77), Looney Tunes, Max Fleischer Popeye, Around the World in 80 Days ('56), 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (Disney), Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Fantasia, Treasure Island (Disney), and The Three Stooges (Curly and Shemp). I picked up the DVDs for these almost immediately. 80 Days was one title I was really pushing for a release and it was a huge event when it finally came out.

The only childhood favorite I don't have on DVD is Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure. This year is the 30th anniversary, but it doesn't look like 20th Century Fox is interested in a DVD release.

EDIT...my bad...I thought this was for childhood faves that you want but aren't on DVD.

As far as stuff that's on DVD already ...I don't know if I ever would have considered buying Battle Beyond the Stars if it wasn't for the fact I saw it as a wee lad. I wasn't that impressed by it as a little kid, and it sure is a helluva lot worse now that I am grown.

Mary Poppins is another one. A good movie and all, but come on...I know I wouldn't have bought it if it didn't have some kind of connection to my early years. Same can be said for Fox and the Hound, probably the first Disney movie I remember seeing.
