I also need to complete a series. Collector have to have a complete series. I buy movies for me, what I like to watch. You dont buy a golfset and hate golf? If my friends dont like
the movies, f*** them. They buy their own stuff. |
I don't think people are sure they won't enjoy a DVD until they've bought it. Not everyone trades or resells their movies, or they find the resale value is too little to bother. So, that's how they end up with movies they hate (after they bought and watched them) in their collection.
I've bought movies for the actor in them, or the director. In the case of "Zardoz," I figured that it had Sean Connery, it was directed by John Boorman (right after he did "Deliverance"), it can't be as bad as some reviews say it is. Although it also has a cult following. So I bought it. I can't say that I hate it -- I'm actually a little repulsed by it. Yet fascinated. So I'd say there's sort of a movie I hate right there, sitting in my collection. Maybe some day I'll once again crave watching Sean Connery running around in a red diaper or seeing a giant stone head vomiting guns -- who knows? |
I'm a collector/completest, so I often buy films that I know I don't enjoy, or imagine I won't if I ever watch them.
I don't think I've ever bought something knowing that I positively won't ever watch it, but there are many in my collection that I'll likely never get around to. Examples: Jaws is my favorite movie, so the completest in me must own the three sequels. I saw part 3 on my DVR recently, and may never watch it again. But I'll never get rid of the unopened DVD I have of it. Exclusives: There are dozens of titles I buy only for the exclusive inside. I eventually give away, trade, or ebay many of these, but for now at least, I have a box of 100 of so DVDs like The Pacifier that you couldn't pay me to watch. (Slight hyperbole, my time is worth $30 an hour if anyone wants me to watch Vin Diesel change diapers and save the universe.) Boxsets: I bought one of those horror 50 pack collections even though I knew that I would likely never watch all of them. I wanted some bulk for the October challenge, and wanted 2 or 3 of the titles inside the collection, which was only $13 for 50 movies. I know that I won't enjoy most of the films, but had to buy it for the above reasons. |
The few DVDs i bought that I didn't enjoy came from a conversation with friends who loved a certain movie, and we shared common interests in other movies, and I figured if they liked those other movies so much then their recommendation might be pretty good, so I'd take a chance and buy it blind.
Sometimes it doesn't work out so well. Sometimes I buy stuff I'd never buy at full price if the sale price gets low enough. It may be something I never really had a strong desire to watch again, but might put in on a rainy afternoon. Buck Rogers the Complete Series was my most recent purchase in that category. I probably could have gone to my grave satisfied with never watching it again, but when it was 19.99 at deepdiscount a while back, I gave in and figured it was only twenty bucks, why not. I think Galactica 1980 will be my next purchase in that category. |

With many of them, I can work the logic in my mind to justify that I sort of wanted the movie anyway. But for many of them, no amount of logic can defend the purchase. Like the 7 or so copies of Ghost Rider..... |
I have only a few DVD's that I do not really want (on some level). For instance, I got the Matrix sequels on DVD for next to nothing. I think they cost me $1 each. Yet I always bat an eye at them, wondering what the hell they are doing in my collection. I enjoyed both but not enough to really own them... and the first Matrix film is my favorite by far. Recently, I purchased Curse of the Golden Flower. I love the director's other films but I was disappointed by this one. The completest in my made the purchase. I guess it is like this for a few of my other favorite director's as well. I am not like this as often with TV shows... in fact, nothing comes to mind.
Still, no one should buy something they do not truly want to own or enjoy. That is a complete waste of money. There are better ways to spend that extra cash... charity, anyone? |
Have to admit that there were many times I bought DVD's for quantity. Too many blind buys of movies I'd never watch more than once.
I've changed my ways over the past year or so. It has cut down my spending and kept my collection clear of movies I won't watch more than once. |
