Anybody seen the new Criterion edition?

Just snagged it for its hefty 35 dollar price tag at Best Buy. I supposed I couuld have paid slightly less on Amazon or some other site but my impulses took over.

I'm just curious to know what your opinions are of this film--with regard in particular to the new transfer and the extras.

I'm sure it will be stunning but I can't help but think Criterion came up a little short in the extras category this time around.

Now when do I get my Criterion copy of The Thin Red Line?

I want to get this, but not at that price. Can someone explain to me why it's so damn expensive?

Kubrick box wiped out my DVD funds for this week but I'll be picking this one up in a week or two... So, I can't really offer up my opinions on the Criterion edition. That said, here's a link to the Beaver comparison.

You could have saved ~ $7+ by ordering from DVD Planet but I hear ya, instant gratification can be worth it.

Hint: it starts with a "C".

Got mine in the mail from DVDPlanet yesterday and watched it. The sound is much, much clearer than the $5 version. The picture looks clearer too, but it's not as improved as the sound, in my opinion. Of course, it still looks absolutely stunning. I haven't had a chance to watch any extras yet.

Jewellrunner, the old Paramount dvd has a surprisingly good transfer--especially for such an old format. I noticed from the dvdbeaver link that the new Criterion transfer seems to offer more "naturalistic" looking colors but some of the sharpness from the old transfer looks compromised. I seem to remember the audio from the old version being often inaudible where there were speaking scenes. Good to know that this new one has improved upon that.

Highly recommended by DVD Talk. You can check their review on this title. I''m definitely picking this up in the coming weeks.

video is much better, especially on a large screen. Less digital noise and artifcating and colours are better too. It's not a whole lot sharper but with less noise and artifacting is a definite improvement.

The audio is also major improvement, much better dynamic range and clearer.

Add in a surprisingly hefty little booklet (given that it's a single-disc release), plus this is the first Criterion I've gotten in those clear cases they use now (the last one I bought was A Nos Amours), and you get a package that's as aesthetically appealing as the movie within.

Indeed, not cheap, but worth every penny IMO. Criterion makes it worth your while.

I was so happy with this one I just ordered their two-disc release of If....

I should get that one next week.

Oh, this was a great release. Along with If.... (as Superdaddy mentioned), it's the best Criterion release of the year. Ace in the Hole was a great set, but the film wasn't great.

But yeah, this package was amazing. The film looked better than ever (as did the sound). Worth it for that alone, but there's much more luckily.
The interviews are very good and insightful. The booklet is very interesting, I couldn't stop reading the articles.

Just a beautiful set.
