Whats the deal with Fright Night 2?

As part of my October Horror Movie Challenge, I was lent a copy of Fright Night 2 by a friend. Whats the deal with this movie? I dont mean the quality of the film itself (it's pretty stupid), but why is the DVD out of print, not transferred well at all, and really not that known about? Did it do really bad in theaters? Something to do with the rights?

I'd like to know myself. I can only hope it's OOP because LG is prepping a new SE that finally anamorphic widescreen (the friggin' film is 2.35:1!) with some decent extras.

Side note: I was talking to Tommy Lee Wallace at a convention and asked him about a FN2 widescreen DVD. He said he didn't know anything about it, but that they may be doing a Fright Night 3. Interesting indeed.

I'm not totally sure, but I think that this might be one of the titles that Lion's Gate licensed from Paramount.

What basically happened was that Lion's Gate got the rights to a number of Paramount titles (from Spelling Entertainment, maybe?) through a distribution deal. The Twin Peaks series was one of the things included.

Anyway, at some point Paramount regretted selling the rights to LG and wouldn't let them have access to decent quality masters, so they had to use fullscreen VHS masters for a number of horror releases, including Fright Night 2. (This is also why you never saw the second season of Twin Peaks released until Paramount got the rights back.)

Looking at the prices the DVD fetches on Ebay....It is just crazyness. I have not seen the DVD myself but I remember reading that the transfer is just plain terrible and it is full screen. I would glady buy a widescreen version, but I wouldnt expect it any time soon. The best bet is probably a good vhs purchase of the movie.

I have this DVD, it is a bad transfer, at best it's from a laserdisc master.

This interesting piece of news refers to the first Fright Night, but I didn't think it was worth creating a new thread yet, since nothing's official. From Bloody-Disgusting:
The good news is that some guys were running around shooting the whole event (Fright Night midnight screening/Q & A) for a potential new DVD release.

I'd LOVE to have a SE of the original, but I seriously want part 2 in widescreen before that happens. I almost went to that midnight screening the other night, but I just didn't want to mess with the crowd. Plus, I had to work at 7:30am the next day and the movie didn't start until around 1am. I can only hope that if the horrible idea of a remake ever comes to fruition that we'll get SE's for both films.

Maybe a Special Edition of the first film will spark interest in Part II.

Yeah but this is a DVD forum. It's not like every thread for each DVD, everyone has to go in it and type "I own this.", that would just get ridiculous.

Re: Whats the deal with Fright Night 2?

Well I bought Fright night 2 widescreen and the print was excellent off of ecrater.com. So I'm happy until they bring out a special edition version with tons of extras! And if it's true about Fright night 3 that's awesome!

Wasn't this originally only available as a pack-in with the first movie? I think that's how I bought it.

Picked it up in a local Pawn Shop a few weeks ago for $3.00. Watched it and then sold the sucker on Ebay for $45.00!

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Anyone who would pay $45.00 for a horrible DVD (the DVD itself, not the movie) is an idiot! Give it a year or two we'll see it again on DVD and def Blu-Ray.

In all honestly I would be SHOCKED to see this title to ever come out on Blu-Ray. A lot of the casual fans of the original either don't know or don't care about the fact there is a sequel. The best we can hope for is probably a new release to tie in if the first ever goes BLU.

There are rumors that they're remaking Fright Night, so maybe 2 will hit DVD (again) around then.

Fright Night Part 2 was made independently by a small now defunct studio called "The Vista Organization" , The film was distributed theatrically by Tri-Star Pictures and on home video by "IVE" (Independent Video Entertainment) which in 1990 became "Live Home Video", which later became "Live Entertainment", which later became "Artisan Entertainment" and in 2001 was bought by Lions Gate Films along with Trimark Pictures and Sterling/Studio Home Entertainment. Paramount had nothing to do with Fright Night Part 2.

Who has the original prints and masters? Who knows at this moment, maybe they are at vault at Sony, since they were the ones who distributed the film theatrically back in 1988 through Tri-Star, Tommy Lee Wallace might have some prints and deleted footage tucked away or producer Herb Jaffe's family may have the prints, Fright Night Part 2 was the producer's last film, he passed away back in 1991. Coincidentally most of the films produced by The Vista Organization have yet to receive the DVD treatment ( 1987's Three for the Road, Dudes, Nightflyers and 1988's Remote Control). Only FN Part 2 and 1987's Maid to Order have received the DVD treatment, and it were full screen VHS transfers.

The original Fright Night was produced by Herb Jaffe as well under his production company Vistar. A remake of it is indeed in pre production at Sony's Screen Gems with the aim for 2011. Both Fright Night films do deserve the SE treatment. And I was in shock when I found out that Stephen Geoffreys who plays 'Evil' Ed Thompson in the first Fright Night left the mainstream film business in 1990 (his last film was 1990's Roland Emmerich's film Moon44) to become a gay pornstar. He has now return to the mainstream with 2007's Sick Girl.

Hope you guys find this info insightful.

I dunno... The movie gets a lot of talk on this site and others. So there is def a pretty big fan base. It might not come out right away, but sooner or later. Hell... We finally got Howard The Duck, Monster Squad, Harry And The Hendersons, etc on DVD. It took forever but we got it!

I didn't know this was a hard to find, seeing as my blockbuster has this sucker for rental still. What's strange is it's a newer blockbuster too.
