Definately The Ice Storm, they had an Ang Lee posting on their blog

MTRodaba2468 10-17-07 11:26 AM

They would have my money right now if it was The Ice Storm.

Geofferson 10-17-07 11:28 AM

^ Agreed - this is great news.

dman988 10-17-07 12:27 PM

This would be great news.

I love the fact that Criterion has started releasing more American/English films that aren't exactly classics (like This Sporting Life, Days of Heaven, The Naked Wild, or the Ice Storm -?-) but are masterpieces that are perhaps even better.

chris_sc77 10-17-07 02:50 PM

If it's the Ice Storm then this is some of the best news Ive heard in years from Criterion. I like Variety and older films as well but i do hope we see some more recent films from the 90's and 2000's from Criterion. I would do anything for Criterion to do an Ultimate edition of Perfume: The Story of A Murderer.

macnorton 10-17-07 02:51 PM

I have never seen Ice Storm, so I will pick it up...funds permitting.

FrancisRizzo3 10-17-07 03:12 PM

Are we certain it's not a Criterion box set of "Ice Road Truckers"?

NoirFan 10-17-07 03:26 PM

Meh. A solid film, but, IMHO, not worthy of the Criterion treatment/price tag.

PopcornTreeCt 10-17-07 04:45 PM

I would say its the only watchable film by Ang Lee and that's not saying much.

Zen Peckinpah 10-17-07 06:01 PM

Damn, I was really hoping this was going to be the confirmation of the long-rumored, much-wanted Criterion release of Maximum Overdrive. That death by projectile soda cans alone makes it worthy of release in the collection! But I guess not...

Crouching Tiger was a fun film.

Wow. That's pretty cool.

If only there were more than six of them, and more I would be interested in purchasing.

Not for me. :)

Greg MacGuffin 10-17-07 10:05 PM

That would be great if it was Ice Storm. Long overdue for a special edition.

jmj713 10-17-07 10:16 PM

Isn't there a decent DVD of it out already?

Yep. Nothing I want to buy either, but I'm taking it as a sign that in the future we'll see more titles, especially those owned by Janus, that Criterion has released. My preferences would be for the following:

Any or all of the Cassavetes Covers
The Battle of Algiers
Woman in the Dunes
La strada
In the Mood for LoveIn the Mood for Love
Bicycle Thieves
The Face of Another
The Scarlet Empress
The Passion of Joan of Arc
Night and the City
Ikiru

The A/V quality is fine on the current DVD, but in the extras department it only has a trailer and a fluffy featurette.

animatedude 10-18-07 09:39 AM

so is it confirmed that it's The Ice Storm?

Cosmic Bus 10-18-07 09:53 AM

With the enormous number of wonderful, unreleased films and under-represented directors out there, it always irks me when Criterion goes to work on a film that has a perfectly serviceable DVD already available, and one that can routinely be purchased for under $5, to boot. :|

Incidentally, if this really is the Ice Storm, it further solidifies the Darjeeling Limited -- another film I suspect isn't necessarily something that needs to be in the collection, but will be added "just because." -- as a future Criterion, as both are Fox properties.

Gobear 10-18-07 10:40 AM

If Criterion is going to release under-the-radar Hollywood movies from the 90s, I'd love for them to release Quiz Show because the current DVD is meh and the film really deserves a wider audience, plus it has what I think is John Turturro's finest performance. I think a docu on Charles Van Doren and the quiz show scandals would be appropriate.

And I don't see how anyone can dismiss Eat Drink Man Woman as unwatchable.

Most wold argue that he's one of today's most gifted directors; Brokeback is a great piece of work.

Great for Huston; I wish that Criterion would get The Dead. And maybe some India cinema. Sholay and the Apu Trilogy are crying for better releases.
