Polanski's Repulsion - 12/4/07

http://www.davisdvd.com/news/dvd.html

Roman Polanski's masterpiece of schizophrenic horror Repulsion finally arrives to Region 1 in a decent, presentable edition from Sony Home Entertainment on December 4th. Long available in an unwatchable bargain-basement disc (with one of the worst pieces of key art ever), the 1965 classic starring Catherine Deneuve, arrives with a remastered transfer and Dolby Digital Mono sound. Unfortunately, there don't appear to be any extras.

Great news!
Yay.

So happy this is finally getting a proper release. All I wanted was a barebones, so I'm not disappointed with this disc.

Excellent! I have the UK disc but will gladly upgrade.

Thank you for posting the news Matthew!

Same here - hopefully this will be a video upgrade - but it appears that the UK-Anchor Bay disc may still be necessary for the supplements. I'm at work, and cannot remember them all, but there's a commentary track with Polanski and Deneuve, and an (IMO quite good) documentary ("A British Horror Film" or something), as well as the trailer, some sketches, and several other features of interest. And a fairly good booklet with essays, as I recall. Pretty stacked release, all told.

But the video... that's another story. Maybe it's just the way the film was shot, but is sure looks to me like AB used some sort of heavy-handed filtering/noise reduction software. I'm definitely hoping for an improvement here.

And the audio... AB's mono track struck me as being a bit less than it should be. Of course, I think alot of folks are interested in the DTS-surround track on the AB disc. It is effective (surprisingly perhaps), particularly during the wall cracking/freak-out scenes, but it's also got that "hollow" quality that affects far too many 5.1 bumps. I'm hoping to hear a full-blooded mono track on the new release.

yep, have the UK disc but hoping this is a better quality release.

Excellent news. Now if we could only get Cul De Sac.

Apparently not. It must have been another false alarm. Even the original link has disappeared.

mikelowry 12-04-07 11:49 PM

Great news it is!

chente 12-05-07 02:04 AM

Isn't the R2 commentary the same one that was on the Criterion LD?

Tyler_Durden 12-05-07 04:42 AM

I can't resist...

I'm not sure what you call "great news" exactly... The fact that it isn't being released after all and that the public has been subjected to another false alarm? :scratch2:

The original link dissapeared because the website, davisdvd.com, is no longer active.

That cover art makes it look like a Something Weird release.

Let's hope.

Collectively, Polanski's Repulsion (1965), Rosemary's Baby (1968) and The Tenant (1976) are often referred to as his "apartment building trilogy". They would make a great boxset. Luckily, The Tenant (in which Polanski also stars) is available in Region 1 in a fine transfer, as is Rosemary's Baby, of course.
