My goal is 30

Oct 1st
1)Alligator (1980): Entertaining, campy fun. Still one of the best animal attack movies, but nothing compared to Jaws.
2)Prom Night (1980): Classic "who dunnit" slasher flick. The killer is extremely creepy while making prank phone calls and tapping the pencil on the table, very well done scene.

Oct 3rd
3)Return of the Living Dead (1985): Great horror movie, and actually my first time seeing it! Perfect mix of comedy and horror, loved the 80's soundtrack, and it stars Juwanna Mann! Wasn't a big fan of the talking, smart zombies though.

Oct 4th
4)Drive Thru (2007): Oh man, what a totally under the radar flick. This could very well become one of my favorite cult favorites in time. We have a great killer (Horny the Clown is my new hero), great kills with the mandatory one liners, and the Morgan Spurlock cameo was priceless! The plot is almost a direct ripoff of Nightmare on Elm Street, but who cares.

Oct 5th
5)Demons (1985): Italian horror at it's finest. The gore never lets up in this movie, it's pretty intense. The one thing that bugged me is how it's kind of a carbon copy of Evil Dead, minus a tree rape scene. Thus, Evil Dead > Demons.
6)Demons 2 (1986): Great sequal to the first, and in some ways better. Again we have just remarkable make up effects and no shortage of gore. I loved the comedy added, as we have a little kid demon and canine demon running loose. On the minus side, there were some useless characters that had nothing to do with the story. For example, four drug addicts in a car who end up in a crash, and then we never see them again. Maybe a public service ad not to do drugs?

Oct 8th
7)Critters (1986): Fun movie to watch even after all these years. It's definately not one of the best scace invader horror movies from the 80's, but it's still a really fun movie to watch. I forgot how hilarious the critters are, just rolling around and cursing.

Oct 10th
8)Black Sheep (2006): Another suprise hit for me this year (the other being Drive Thru). Very reminiscent of Peter Jackson's earlier work. Has a lot of positives: witty dialogue, great musical score, amazing visuals of New Zealand's countryside, and good amount of gore. I've seen human to fly, human to wolf, but human to sheep transformation is just awesome. Will definately watch this again sometime soon.

Oct 12th
9)Silent Hill (2006): Wasn't too big of fan of this when I watched it last year, but I appreciate it a lot more this time. There's a lot of great elements to this movie: the visuals, Pyramid Head, and I love the horns blaring meaning all hell is going to break loose. Easliy the best video game adaption.

Oct 14th
10)Poltergeist (1982): Easily a favorite from my childhood. This was the second movie that scared me the most as a kid, right behind Child's Play. So many great scenes: the chairs rearranging, the thunderstorms, the doll!!! I love the atmosphere of this movie, just superbly done!
11)Frankenstein (1931): I'm afraid to admit this, but this is my first time seeing this movie. Definately a classic that should be seen by everyone. There's a reason why it's still highly regarded today.

Oct 15th
12)Dracula (1931): Darn, halfway through the challenge and I'm only at 12. Again, unbelievably, I'm seeing this for the first time. Just a classic that shouldn't be messed with. Bela Lugosi is a genious. THE END
13)Tales from the Darkside: The Movie (1990): First time viewing of this as well. Overall, I really enjoyed it. Lot 249 was entertaining, Cat From Hell was just silly, and Lover's Vow was probably my favorite.

Oct 18th
14)Wrong Turn (2003): Loved the make-up effects of Stan Winston, but that's about it. Just the same thing as any other mutant, cannibal terrorizing movie out there. Eliza Dushku has more balls than the 2 male lead actors in this movie.
15)Wrong Turn 2: Dead End (2007): Just another sub-par slasher movie. Lot more gore than the first, and some pretty inventive deaths. Loved Henry Rollins character, he made this movie watchable. Also, I found the grunting of the family members hilarious!

Oct 20th
16)Sleepy Hollow (1999): Definately not my favorite Depp role, nor Burton's best. I just read the book, and I definately like the book a lot more. In my opinion, they should have kept the book's ending. The cartoonish characterization of Walken at the end was just laughable.

Oct 27th
17)Slither (2006): Great movie, in my top 5 of 2006. A perfect homage to 80's sci fi invasion flicks. Nathan Fillion shines, and James Gunn could be the future of horror. LOVED this movie!

Oct 28th
18)Saw 4 (2007): I said it once, I'll say it again, I don't like where this series is headed. Saw 1 was a huge suprise, totally caught me off guard with how original it is. Saw 2 and 3 were just bad followups, and more or less the same thing. 4 was better than 3, but that's nto saying much. I did enjoy the insights into Jigsaw's life though, what made him become what he is.
19)Hostel (DC) (2005): Watched this one as to refresh my memory to watch Part 2 next. Does it hold up? It's still alright, but nothing unique about it. Just your cash in to the torture genre with Eli Roth at the helm. It's really tame for those who have seen other movies like Cannibal Holocaust.

Oct 31st
20)Friday the 13th (1980): So much nostalgia factor here, what child of the 80's didn't grow up with these? I love the soundtrack, probably third favorite overall after Halloween and the Shining.
21)Terror Train (1980): First time viewing of this one, had to see it since it stars Jamie Lee. An ok movie overall, I wasn't too fond of it. Loved David Copperfield though.
22)Halloween (1978): An essential viewing every Halloween. Simply put: my favorite horror film of all time. Everything is perfect, the sountrack, the stalking shots, the opening zoom in of the pumpkin, everything flows perfectly. This film will never age.
23)Bubba Ho-Tep (2002): Great way to end the October Horror challenge as it's one of my cult favorites. Campbell shines, I absolutely loved his Elvis impersonation.

Overall: 23/30, a little short of my goal. Oh well, I had fun doing it and hope to participate next year.

This contest has been a blast! I am glad I was involved. I have really enjoyed looking at everyones lists. I started pretty strong, but got very busy about halfway through. Oh well, I had a good time.

I can't wait for the Holiday Movie challenge!

10/1
1. Evil Remains - A terrible, terrible movie that Tivo predicted that I would like. Damn you Tivo. It starred a Brian Austin Green knock-off, a Jeremy Sisto knock-off, and an Estella Warren knock...oh wait, that was actually Estella Warren. Time for a new agent. Not the best way to start this off.
2. Alice, Sweet Alice - A strange little giallo-ish flick. Not Argento, but not too bad.

10/2
3. Halloween 6 - Probably my least favorite film in the Halloween series, but one that I want to get out of the way as I'm going to be watching the entire series over the course of the month.
4. Phenomena - Also known as Creepers. Watching Alice, Sweet Alice put me in the Argento mood and instead of starting with Suspiria or Deep Red, I chose Phenomena. All the ingredients (gloved killer, killer soundtrack, Donald Pleasence, Jennifer Connelly telepathically controlling insects, and a monkey) add up to a very fun, if logic jumping film.

10/3
5. Bram Stoker's Dracula - The Coppola version. I've always loved this film and I watch it every October. I got the Blu-ray and while not perfect, it's not as terrible as the reviews have indicated.

10/5
6. Halloween - My favorite movie of all time. The movie that spawned my obsession with the genre and one that I watch every few months. I just got the Blu-ray and I must say that I've never seen the film like this. Absolutely pristine.
7. Children of the Corn 2 - Tivoed from AMC, despite an appreciation for the first film (from the first time I read the short, I found the concept of children rising against adults creepy), I had trouble making it through this one. Boring, predictable, and poorly written/acted are what I take away from this one.

10/8
8. Death Proof - While I view this as the better half of Grindhouse (and that's not to take away from Planet Terror, which I thought was a fun hour and 1/2 too), I decided to view the double bill in reverse order than they were shown in the film and...
9. Planet Terror - I've deducted that the way that Rodriguez and Tarantino structured the film was the best way to see them. Planet Terror is much more appreciated as the appetizer to Death Proof's main course. I don't know if anyone looked better in a film this year than Rose McGowan in Planet Terror.

GOAL: 25 (jacking it up from 20 last year even though I ended up reaching 26 last year; I'd go for 31, but I have a law school thesis and the MPRE that all need to be done before the end of the month).

October 1:
1. Resident Evil (2002) A good movie to start off October; a little bit action, a little bit horror (and part of my personal favorite horror genre - ZOMBIES)

October 3:
2. Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) Still trying to get through the RE movies before I see Extinction soon...

October 7:
3. Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) First time ever seeing this classic - I think I like it more than any of the other Universal classic monsters. The story actually seemed pretty decent and it kept my attention throughout. This was only my third movie in a week, which is way disappointing. The baseball playoffs are taking up a lot of my movie watching time (GO TRIBE!! BEAT THE YANKEES!!) so we'll see where I end up.

October 10:
4. Revenge of the Creature (1955) Continuing the trilogy... I gotta try to pick up the pace, I'm way behind everyone it seems. Too much school, work, and baseball!

October 11:
5. The Creature Walks Among Us (1956) This probably would have been my favorite out of the three had it not been for Universal's shitty mastering of the disc and the extreme pixelation I got right towards the 50-minute mark. Overall I was really surprised as to how much I enjoyed the whole "Creature" trilogy.

October 12:
6. The Mummy (1932) These older black and white films seem to have more character and life to them than some of the modern-day big budget films seem to have. This was my first time watching this one and I must say that I was impressed.

October 14:
7. Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) Decent ending to the trilogy, although for those who have seen it, I'd say my favorite sequence was the Vegas fight scene. It may have been a bit too slowly paced at times, and my only gripe is that it lacked some closure at the end.

October 15:
8. The Mummy's Hand (1940) A very good film, although I was surprised to see that they recycled the a lot of footage from The Mummy because it looked like their budget was pretty decent for the number of sets they used. The title was a little deceptive, I suppose, seeing as how the "hand" of the mummy has absolutely nothing to do with the actual plot.
9. The Mummy's Tomb (1942) And here I thought The Mummy's Hand recycled a lot of footage... this was a disappointing bout from Universal. Hell, after 40 minutes I thought I was watching Frankenstein.

October 17:
10. The Mummy's Curse (1944) Wow, a Mummy film that doesn't start off with 10 minutes of recycled footage - excellent start. This film was average until the last 15 minutes where there was actually a really interesting plot twist. Two thumbs up for this one; much better than The Mummy's Tomb.

October 19:
11. Planet Terror (2007) I thought this half of Grindhouse was a little better-paced and actually benefited from the additional footage than its counterpart Death Proof. A lot of action and some FANTASTIC makeup and effects really helped this one become super-rewatchable.

October 21:
12. 30 Days of Night (2007) I really enjoyed this one, despite having never read the graphic novel. From what I've heard the movie really expanded on the depth of the characters and added a lot of story, but I thought the movie really benefited from that. Tons of blood and gore, too, which is a bit nice change of pace from some of the classic films I've been watching lately.
13. The Mummy's Ghost (1944) Apparently there's only so many plots you can derive from Kharis and his long-time-love Ananka as evidenced by this film. Absolutely nothing original in this one.

October 22:
14. Pulse: Unrated (2006) I had planned to watch two movies tonight, but I decided to watch Chuck instead. I thought Pulse was going to be one of those "its scary because things constantly jump at you" movies, but I was pleasantly surprised that its plot wasn't horrible. I haven't seen White Noise, but I'm guessing this movie pretty much riffed off that plot. I still enjoyed it thoroughly, however.

October 24:
15. The Descent: Unrated Original Cut (2006) It's a rarity that you actually get an original horror movie these days because it seems like everything's been done, but as far as my limited knowledge goes, this one is an original. Damn good ending, too.
16. Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006) I wasn't too impressed with this one, probably just because you know how it's going to end. I wish they had a little more exposition in terms of how Leatherface actually came to be. I mean, what we saw here wasn't anything we really couldn't piece together ourselves from other TCM films.

October 25:
17. Ju-on: The Grudge 2 (2003) The first Japanese horror I've watched this year. I didn't have time to re-watch Ju-on beforehand, but I remembered enough of what happened. Pretty decent follow-up, but not enough scares for me - there were 2 or 3 moments were there was some real potential to scare the crap out of me, but no execution.

October 26:
18. Phatasm (1979)
19. Phatasm III: Lord of the Undead (1993)
20. Saw III (2006)

October 28:
21. Saw IV (2007) Well, I can already surmise what Saw V is going to be about, but one thing I can say for this franchise is that the writing is damn good - not so much in the whole "depth of plot" theme, but the fact that they actually have some sort of idea behind what they want to do. The continuity of the films is mind-boggling, but it holds together (at least from what I can tell, I don't sit and study them).
22. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1979) First time ever seeing this 70's remake of the 1950's IotBS, and I must say, I was blown away by it's execution. The quality of the DVD is damn good, to boot, making this a very enjoyable viewing experience. For those who've seen it, the ending really got me; I was definitely not expecting it!

October 29:
23. Psycho II (1983)
24. Psycho III (1986)

October 31:
25. Psycho IV: The Beginning (1990)
26. The Thing (1982)

TOTAL: 26
I didn't think I'd make it for a while, but thanks to taking a week off of work, I was able to eke out a total at least equaling last year's! With law school ending in May, next year I'm going to finally attempt a full 31 films in 31 days. I can't wait!

Wednesday, October 3rd

Thursday, October 4th

Friday, October 5th

Saturday, October 6th

Sunday, October 7th

= FIRST TIME VIEWING

Starting off slow and aiming for 50 movies. I usually get to 10 a MONTH if I'm lucky, so 50 will be a big jump for me (but not impossible (I hope)). So many times the few that I get to are non-horror movies, this will give me a chance to run through some of those that have been sitting on my shelf for (sometimes) years unwatched and collecting dust.

Oct. 1
01. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Oct. 2
02. Carnival of Souls (1962)
Oct. 3
03. Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959)
04. MST3K version of Soultaker (1990)
05. Night of the Living Dead (1990)
Oct. 4
06. MST3K version of I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957)
07. An American Werewolf in London¹ (1981) More than what I expected, a brilliant homage to its obvious influences. Slaughtered Lamb, drinks on me!
Oct. 5
08. World Apartment Horror¹ (1991) The horror is mild at best, more of an allegory on foreigners in Japanese society. Wait, what?
09. Wild Zero¹ (2000) Shambling zombies and rock'n'roll!!!!!!
Oct. 6
10. 1408¹ (2007) Atmospheric but, probably the way the management prefers it, empty.
11. Disturbia¹ (2007) Shitsturbia. David Morse, you're still a creepy guy though.
Oct. 7
12. Death Proof (2007)
Oct. 8
13. MST3K version of Zombie Nightmare (1986)
14. Nightmare City (Incubo sulla città contaminata)¹ (1980) Captain Insano-type zombies. Radiation? Lots of gore, spandex, and one goofy ending.
15. Hell of the Living Dead aka Virus¹ (1980) A clunker in every sense of the word. The film seems to take pleasure in how much stock footage it contains.
Oct. 9
16. Shock Waves¹ (1977) Waterlogged. Undead. Nazis. Who needs a plot?
17. Hunchback of the Morgue (Jorobado de la Morgue, El)¹ (1973) If Hammer had made a hunchback movie. Fantastically absurd with a nice amount of gore.
Oct. 10
18. Blood of the Vampire (1958)
19. MST3K version of Manos: The Hands of Fate (1966)
Oct. 11
20. Child's Play (1988)
21. The Devil-Doll¹ (1936) Another Tod Browning gem. Great effects on the living-dolls, that is, when they're not in someone's hand. Starring Lionel Barrymore in drag.
Oct. 12
22. The House by the Cemetery (Quella villa accanto al cimitero)¹ (1981) This movie oozes. Loads of blood, one savage bat attack. Awful, awful dub.
23. House (1986)
24. House II: The Second Story¹ (1987) Cutesy-poo, with none of the relative edge the original possesses. Entertaining, though.
Oct. 13
25. The Monster Squad¹ (1987) Yes, I'd never seen it before, and yes, it does rule. For fans of Universal horror and foul-mouthed little children.
26. MST3K version of Werewolf (1996)
Oct. 15
27. Alone in the Dark¹ (1982) Jack Palance has some great scenes, but Donald Pleasence's turn as a tripped-out asylum doctor is worth admission price alone.
Oct. 16
28. Häxan¹ (1922) A milestone in film to be sure, though its sometimes docu-style approach falls a bit flat after all this time. The director plays his own Satan!
29. Planet Terror (2007)
Oct. 17
30. Man Made Monster (1941)
31. Horror Island¹ (1941) Yawn. A forgettable Universal whodunit. I think most of us would chase "The Phantom" down with a tire iron rather than be terrified.
32. The Wolf Man (1941)
Oct. 18
33. Night Monster¹ (1942) A less forgettable Universal whodunit, it would have been so much better if the cast had all switched roles. Who casts Lugosi as a butler?!??
34. Captive Wild Woman¹ (1943) If we were having a 1st annual lion/tiger-taming movie challenge, this would qualify.
Oct. 19
35. The Mad Ghoul¹ (1943) The Mad Ghoul doesn't look so much zombified as hung over. Everyone involved in this production must have been exposed to Mayan gas.
36. We're Going to Eat You (Diyu wu men) (1980)
37. The Devil (Xie mo)¹ (1981) There's LOTS of people vomiting up worms. Oh, and some kid named Ding-Dong running an escort service on the side.
Oct. 21
38. Gothic¹ (1986) It's Ken Russell, and it's all appropriately twisted, but there's no depth to these non-fictional characters. A mess of a laudanum-filled night.
Oct. 22
39. Spooky Encounters (Gui da gui) (1980)
40. Mr. Vampire (Geung si sin sang) (1985)
41. Mr. Vampire II (Jiang shi xian sheng xu ji) (1986)
42. Martin¹ (1977) Wow. Even among all the zombie greats, this is quintessential Romero. John Amplas is fantastic in this wondrous twist on the vampire legend.
Oct. 23
43. Mill of the Stone Women (Mulino delle donne di pietra, Il)¹ (1960) The cold Dutch landscape creates quite a feel in this Hammer-esque waxworks film.
44. Black Sunday aka The Mask of Satan (Maschera del demonio, La)¹ (1960) Beautifully shot, great sets, this picture plays like the darkest fairy tale.
45. Mr. Vampire III (Ling huan xian sheng) (1987)
46. Mr. Vampire Saga 4 (Jiang shi shu shu) (1988)
47. The Earth Dies Screaming¹ (1965) A tight Terence Fisher film that gains more from the dread and isolation than the tin-foil boogeymen.
48. The Crazies¹ (1973) Romero has done it better, but Richard France is great as another doctor who's convinced the world is full of dummies! dummies! dummies!
Oct. 24
49. Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965)
50. The House That Dripped Blood (1971)
51. Tales from the Crypt¹ (1972)
Oct. 25
52. The Brides of Dracula (1960)
53. The Curse of the Werewolf (1961)
Oct. 26
54. The Kiss of the Vampire (1963)
55. The Plague of the Zombies (1966)
56. Rasputin: The Mad Monk (1966)
57. The Witches (1966)
Oct. 27
58. Dawn of the Dead (2004)
59. The Lost Boys (1987)
60. Drácula (Spanish version) (1931)
Oct. 29
61. The Return of Dracula¹ (1958)
62. MST3K version of Horrors of Spider Island (1960)
63. The Fly (1958)
64. Return of the Fly¹ (1959)
65. The Invisible Man (1933)
66. Werewolf of London (1935)
Oct. 30
67. Race with the Devil (1975)
68. MST3K version of The Touch of Satan (1971)
69. Dawn of the Dead (1978)
70. Shaun of the Dead (2004)
71. Dead Alive aka Braindead¹ (1992)
72. The Evil Dead (1981)
73. Dracula (1931)
74. Dracula's Daughter (1936)
Oct. 31. Happy Halloween!
75. Frankenstein (1931)
76. Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
77. I Walked with a Zombie (1943)
78. The Body Snatcher (1945)
79. Day of the Dead (1985)

¹ means I hadn't seen it before

October 1st

1) 2 AM: Diabolique.... It was my 1st time seeing this movie, and I must say that it was excellent. The movie never let up on the tension. The last 30 minutes had me on the edge of my seat. The last 10 minutes had me peaking above the covers. Phenomenal.

2) 7 PM: Burial Ground.... An atmospheric, bloody little gem that sees the dead come back to life and tormenting a bunch of people. Includes a disturbingly creepy "kid" who looks like he's a 40 year old midget. I loved it.

3) 10 PM: Edmond.... William H. Macy just totally owned this role. Great movie directed by one of my favorite directors, Stuart Gordon.

October 3rd

4) 3 PM: The Burning.... Great gore effects by Savini, but I wanted more. There's 30-45 minutes where you're just waiting for something to happen, but nothing does. Still a solid installment in the 'Capitalize on Halloween and Friday the 13th' subgenre.

5) 8 PM: From Beyond.... Stuart Gordon does it again. From Beyond is a trippy, sick movie with 2 Gordon regulars (Combs and Crampton).

October 8th

6) 1 PM: Tales from the Crypt.... Fantastic anthology. I loved every part of this movie, especially the first and the last tales. The one with Peter Cushing was pretty good as well.

October 9th

7) 9:45 PM: Dolls.... A decent entry from Stuart Gordon. About as good as a movie about killer dolls could possibly be.

October 10th

8) 2:30 PM: Zombie Holocaust (AKA Dr. Butcher MD).... Tons of gore and tons of fun. The plot is pretty stupid, but I guarantee that you'll be equally repulsed and entertained by this one.

9) 8 PM: Kill, Baby.... Kill.... Bava comes through once again with creepy set pieces that make this film one not to be missed. Highly recommended.

10) 11:00 PM: Day of the Dead.... I usually watch this along with Night and Dawn, but I couldn't wait any longer. I was bored and wasn't in the mood to watch anything else. One of my top 10 favorite horror movies.

October 11th

11) Fright Night.... Love it. What's not to love?

12) House on the Edge of the Park.... I honestly don't know what I think about this one. Sometimes I just wanted it to end, but some of it was pretty creepy and intense. I really liked David Hess. John Morghen (Cannibal Holocaust, Cannibal Ferox, Stagefright, etc.) couldn't be any more annoying if he tried. The ending also went on WAY too long. I'm on the fence about it.

October 12th

13) 12:15 AM: Re-Animator.... One of the best horror movies around. The PERFECT horror/comedy. Love it, love it, love it.

14) 5 PM: Vault of Horror.... Meh. Average anthology.

15) 7:45 PM: Maniac.... One of those great horror movies that I appreciate more and more every time I watch it. One of my favorites.

16) 9:15 PM: Halloween ('78).... Top 5 all time. One of the best horror movies ever. The score is great and it's legitimately scary. Still holds up.

17) 11:15: 13 Ghosts ('60).... I love all the haunted house movies from this era. Not as good as The Haunting or House on Haunted Hill, but it's still very solid.

October 17th

18) 6 PM: Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.... One of my favorites. Rooker puts on a great performance.

October 18th

19) 1:40 AM: A Nightmare On Elm Street.... Despite the mostly awful sequels (for the most part), this one is still awesome. Very creepy.

October 22nd

20) 1:30 AM: The Redsin Tower.... Atmospheric, creepy, gore in all the right places. TTP should be proud.
