it appears i'm in the minority here, but is all that matters the packaging?
does nobody care about image quality???

How did the picture and audio of this “Director’s Cut” compare to those of the prior edition with just the theatrical release of the film? I thought the two DVDs offered identical audio, but the visuals demonstrated definite improvement here. The original DVD looked very good but suffered from a moderate amount of jagged edges and shimmering. Those concerns disappeared from the DC transfer, so I bumped up my grade from a “B+” for the theatrical DVD to a very solid “A” for the “Director’s Cut” edition.

What a great review and it's convinced me to pick this up. I'll plan to get the HD DVD and hope that it's cheaper than the $28 today. If not, a worthwhile purchase.

Wow. The art still looks surprisingly good, but damn Paramount, it could have been used so much more effectively. And what the hell is with Paramount not putting art on their discs? This is supposed to be a great special edition, at least put some great art on the discs too. I really wish this film were done by Universal. They seem to making some pretty great dvds lately that have some pretty spiffy art and package design. I also wish Paramount had stayed format neutral because up until they went HD-exclusive this had been my most anticipated Bluray for my PS3.

I don't really wanna complain too much about the packaging since the content looks to be so good but goddammit that inner packaging sucks for $35. Porn has better inner packaging than this!!!

While listening to the commentaries, I decided to pop in the theatrical version (while watching the DC) and clocked each new scene. I've included when they occur and the approximate length:
0:45:13 - 0:45:28 (0:15) -- Insert shot
0:45:34 - 0:46:51 (0:17) -- Insert shot
0:54:56 - 0:55:12 (0:16) -- Melvin Belli talks about his safari trip (when the Zodiac letter came to his house)
1:12:57 - 1:13:13 (0:16) -- Toschi introduces himself to Riverside Chief
1:13:30 - 1:13:46 (0:16) -- Extra dialogue
1:28:54 - 1:29:35 (0:41) -- New scene between Gyllenhaal and Downey
1:34:43 - 1:36:51 (2:08) -- 3-Way conversation laying out Leigh as suspect to get search warrant*
1:42:36 - 1:43:26 (0:50) -- Extended audio montage (black screen)
2:24:30 - 2:24:34 (0:04) -- Extra beat
* a 2-second insert shot was removed
