I actually decided to finally take the time to sign up to join this as i have plenty of downtime at my job and plenty of unwatched horror movies i still need to go through. my goal however is 50 as halloween is my favorite holiday i tend to keep busy outside of work.

Over the last few months, I've really grown on the horror genre. The problem is I'm picky with it - i'm not a fan of the recent gore porn stuff like Hostel, etc. I'm much more a fan of the more psychological creepy films like The Exorcist, 1408, The Haunting. And zombie movies - i can sit through hours of vampires, demon possessions, etc and sleep fine but zombies will keep me up all night haha.

So any suggestions for some good horror movies that rely on true scares and not just gore?

Then you definitely want to see Session 9. It's probably the best horror movie from the last ten years. Dead End with Ray Wise is a good little flick that gets overlooked. And the recent direct-to-dvd Sublime was a pretty good mind-screw too.

As for zombies, it's hard to think of anything that's safe to recommend other than the Romero films and their remakes. There's a ton of them out there, but alot are either crap or an aquired taste. I'd say watch Fulci's The Beyond and City of the Living Dead (or known as The Gates of Hell) and if you like those, then you'd probably like alot of the others out there. For a less serious one, you have to check out Return of the Living dead. It's one of my favorite movies period. I watch it at least once a week and have sice it came out on dvd four or five years ago.

EDIT: Forgot to mention one called Dead Birds. That one was kind of slow paced and creeped me out. You might like that one too.

Yee!! I can't wait for this I am so excited. I've actually been watching a few horror movies now that I have not seen before, just to get ready.

Ooooo. I forgot about this one. I've had this on my DVR for about a month or two and I've STILL never seen it. I'll add it to my list for this year.

I'll also add The Old Dark House. I had it on my DVR last year and it accidentally got deleted before I could finish it.

And The Birds... because I've never seen it.

I'm definitely in, I didn't find this forum until after this challenge last year, and since I'm not one to choose horror movies I figure this a good way to make myself watch some. I'm hoping for 50, but we will see. I'm really not a huge fan of slasher movies, so will just have to find enough that aren't or cover my eyes in a few parts lol .

Oh also, my mom really wants to watch some with me, but really wants to get me to watch all the Alfred Hitchcock movies, would those count?

The first DVD that I have ever watched and immediately wanted to burn. If I was Bill Gates I'd buy whoever owns the rights, recall all copies, and destroy all the masters. Very painful to watch. Just my opinion.....

I am definitely in for this year. With school and work I'm not sure exactly how many I'm going to be able to hit. I know I'm going to watch as many as possible though. 100 might be a bit too high but I'd love to hit it.

That was my initial reaction after the first viewing. But, I forced myself to watch it again and upon the second viewing I actually began to enjoy it. It's one of those films that gets better with subsequent viewings, IMO...much like "Suspira" (one of my all-time favorites) did for me.

I don't know Chad, I'm one of the most forgiving people around when it comes to movies/TV, but I'm not sure if I can. Well, maybe since it counts as horror I'll give it one more try next month. But if it causes me to spontaneously combust you're responsible man....

That's a tough one. They don't have reoccurring characters like a TV show and the IMDB lists it as a mini-series, which counts, but only once. Of course most are usually not anthologies like this one.

And before someone brings up the inevitable argument of "if MOH counts then it should too" - dcrw6 said it best:

That's not the case with this series. Maybe the entire series should just count as one because the same would hold true with other mini-series such as "The Stand", "Storm of the Century", etc....despite their longer running times. It's also the same case with the documentary "100 Years of Horror" which has a runtime of 750 minutes (4.5 hours longer than N&D!). Need more input on this one.

I agree with dcrw6's post regarding Masters of Horror.
Also, I feel that Nightmares and Dreamscapes should be allowed to be counted. But as one title, just like all the other King mini-series.

Maybe we should make the "movie" "challenge" be 60 minutes a day for 31 days, meaning 1860 minutes to be divided up whatever way people want. Allow TV episodes (Buffy/Angel), documentaries, movies, short films, mini-series, ... whatever... just make it be at least 1860 minutes for the month of October.

I mentioned my feelings on something similar a while back. I just think keeping track of running times complicates things far too much. I just want to watch movies, not have to keep track of how long each runs for. Also, the possibility of discrepancies is there. IMDB says a movie is 95 minutes while the dvd in my hand says 99 minutes. I list it as 99 minutes and next thing you know, someone is coming out of the woodwork stating the IMDB time as gospel. Just makes things more complicated than they need to be.
