No unrated = no sale...regardless as to whether I saw it in the theatre or not. I want to see it the way the director intended it to be seen (...i.e. not by kids). This paltry offering stinks of a double dip within six months of the first release.

The rating was not that big of a deal. Yes the others are R rated, and yes it would be cool to see an unrated cut. But this one still brought the action, just not too much of the language. I'll bet that if most of you went in not knowing the rating, or anything about the "oh no PG-13" controversy, you would have been satisfied. In fact I know of people who did so.

DVDEmpire added a synopsis:

Live Free or Die Hard - 2 disc Unrated

The action explodes as never before in this 2-Disc Collector's Edition of Live Free Or Die Hard! Start with the unrated movie version, packed with more thrills, more attitude...more John McClane! Then add a spectacular 10-part documentary that takes you where no Die Hard fan has gone before, plus an uncensored interview with Bruce Willis on the studio backlot and more. With over 2 1/2 hours of special features, this is the ultimate Die Hard experience. Yippee-ki-yay!

I agree! Die Hard 4 was entertaining but it lacks all the bloody violence the Die Series is known for.

Check this out

http://www.foxbd.com/DieHardTrilogy.htm

I found this at the fox website, announcing the Blue Ray release of the all four die hard movies, although it doesn't completely say what will be on LFODH, the die hard trilogy will have all of the extras from the OOP 2-disc sets of the first three films. I think I will be double dipping for the blue ray discs to go with my PS3.

In all my years of dvd collecting, I've never heard of a studio releasing a PG-13 theatrical cut and an R-rated cut. But, maybe I'm wrong.

It probably will be the R-rated cut, but it will be called Unrated.

Nevermind, now I am confused....
There have been a couple movies that have been released on DVD with a higher rating, such as Daredevil or Saving Silverman. It all depends if the cut included was rated by the MPAA, regardless of whether it was the theatrical cut or not.

Anyway, I'm glad to see that there's an unrated cut being put out. I just hope it doesn't look obvious that they tried to bump the rating up, like with the R-rated Pearl Harbor or Snakes On A Plane.

Have you seen the movie? There is obivous voice over dubbing for the language, and edits covering would violence that would have made it rated R. I could be wrong but this will be an unrated cut that will top the Theatrical cut.

Amazed at your obsession with the rating.

You mentioned earlier that Bruce was just in this one for a paycheck. And you are now overlooking that just because you will get probably 5 minutes worth of changes (that you don't even know what they will be)? Yiipee-kay-yay mother of my friend's next door neighbor's children.

maybe so, But the statement is that Bruce was in this for the paycheck with it being PG-13, and probably gets a cut of the grosses with how much money it made. Bruce or Len Wiseman could have made a stand with this movie been rated R, I just want to see an action movie in spirit of the 80s and 90s, not this watered down shit that Hollywood force feeds us every summer. Hopefully the unrated cut can redeem it. btw I will probably wait for the reviews before I buy LFODH.

I have seen the movie, and yes, I recognized the redubbing done.

I remember reading something (on these forums, in fact) about them possibly digitally adding blood in some of the scenes. I'd rather it be PG-13 then have incredibly fake-looking CGI blood to beef up the rating.

I agree. This is why I don't like the 'fullscreen' only listing for the PG-13 version on dvdempire(I hope that changes). I hate when studios release a theatrical version in pan & scan only.

I didn't notice much bad dubbing, except in one sequence with Justin Long at the electric plant(and a 'melon farmer' type of word was probably an alternate subtitute for you know what).. And I suspect people are looking too deeply into the editing of dialogue scenes. Just because it may cut around in a scene to show another characters reaction or something. Does not mean it's skipping over the profanity.

Especially since I thought it was said. That they filmed alternate takes of some scenes? One using substitute words, the other swear words and such? If that's the case, then there would be no need to chop up dialogue deleting 'dirty words' as people claim they see.

If the violence was cut to get a PG-13. Only one bit in Justin Longs apartment seemed like it could have some graphic stuff added, since it's tough to tell what Bruce does to one bad guy in the doorway. The rest of the violence,it was easy to tell what was going on with nothing seeming 'cut'.

And if the film was made as an R,or PG-13 is still up in the air. It sounds almost like it was PG-13 from the start. And knowing fan uproar and wanting to cash in on an 'unrated' version. They filmed alternate profane takes, and add fake CGI blood in later. I would have prefered them to film alternate bloody takes instead. Or use real fake blood on the set, then erase/edit out for PG-13 in theaters and restore for unrated dvd. At least then it would be obvious it was filmed with one rating in mind with no self conscious compromising. And then, the studio stepped in and decided "we're gonna tone this down to a PG-13 to rake in more money".

I'm going to wait and see what reviews on the changes to the unrated version are. Before I decide to get it or not.

I agree, I think it's incredibly stupid on their part. It's like they're saying "No, you don't want that version, it's not as good (even though we forced it upon you in theaters!)"

UPDATE: Rope of Silicon's homepage also lists (under the DVD announcements at the bottom of the page) that there will be a two-disc special edition of the PG-13 rated version. This information could be false but ROPE is a very reliable source IMO.

I'll pick up the 1disc unrated version. Really enjoyed the movie, but don't really have the time for special features any more...

The press release better have the wrong info because if the Unrated cut is hitting dvd but NOT blu-ray, I am going to be fucking pissed off to no end. I loved it in the theatre, but I have no doubt that the unrated is going to be the better version.

I'm only going on what the press release says:

Blu-Ray Exclusive

The Live Free or Die Hard BD release includes the PG-13 rated theatrical version of the film and all of the above standard definition special features plus D-Box motion sensor capabilities, several high-definition trailers and the exclusive high definition BD-Java multi-level strategy game “Black Hat Intercept!”. The disc will be authored in BD-J with AVC (MPEG 4) compression and presented on 50 GB dual-layer disc with English 5.1 DTS HD Lossless Master Audio plus English, French and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital Sound.

Well, the artwork on the same page as their announcement shows "unrated" right there on the Blu-Ray art, so, someone at Fox is apparently confused...

Still, has Fox yet added all the DVD supplements to any of their releases? Didn't Night at the Museum leave off the supplements included with the DVD 2-disc SE?

There may be a 2 disc SE PG-13 version as well. Fox press release is all mixed up. It mentions three dvd editions. Then later on Live Free or Die Hard Unrated and Rated (widescreen only) Two-Disc Edition.

And despite it stating PG-13 Blu-ray,the BR picture in the ad shown on dvdactive says unrated. So the chances are the press released is flawed to say the least.
