Gangs of New York...S.E?

I noticed this was in the upcoming rumored releases thread. I have yet to pick it up, do to the fact of this rumored special edition. It has been pretty cheap lately at some of the local DVD stores. Do you think it would be wise to wait or pick it up?

The current edition is pretty packed as it is. There is however, a 4-disc set of the movie that came out in France with a few interesting-sounding supplements; the rest however, looks to be heavy on EPK-style interviews/featurettes.

But they really do need to fix the video transfer on the R1 disc. Even on my 29" CRT TV, it doesn't look too hot.

I'd really like to see this get reissued in a director's/extended cut with all of the removed footage added back in. IIRC, there were a lot of scenes that sounded really cool that Scorsese cut for pacing reasons. I like this movie, but I still want to love it.

Scorsese has said multiple times that the theatrical version is the director's cut (whether he's saying that to put on a nice public face for Harvey Weinstein is up for debate). And with the exception of New York, New York (which is basically a minor extension of the theatrical cut), he's never really done a DC.

EDIT: For those that are curious about the initial cut of Gangs, here's an article about it by Jeffrey Wells (who saw both versions of the movie):

heehee movie poop shoot.
Seriously though, I had never heard there was a longer cut of Gangs of New York. Very informative article and now I'm real interested in seeing the longer cut.

That was a very interesting article on Gangs of New York http://moviepoopshoot.com/elsewhere/33.html .
I guess based on this bit from the article:

Why has Scorsese been pooh-poohing questions about an alternate cut in interviews? I think he's playing along to get along and move on with his career, which is panning out quite nicely now that he's set to direct THE AVIATOR.
I'd agree with the author that it made sense for Scorsese to look forward and move on, and just let Gangs go.
With hindsight, it certainly paid off, with The Aviator, and then that re-make of Infernal Affairs... oh what was it called... ;)
