Has anyone purchased this? will this play in a region 1 player or do i need an all region player to play? are the menus in english? is it as easy as hitting the audio button to turn on the english language version of the show?

Well this what I could find for you info wise:
Transformers: Generation 1 - Complete Series Tin Box (1984-1987)
Pexland Internation,
DISCONTINUED,
China ((China REGION 7))
I hope that help you out.

I have this set. It is region free, the menus are in chinese but not very difficult to navigate and the audio can easily be switched to english using the remote.

Ever since I searched for Transformers DVDs on e-bay, I have been getting annoying spam e-mails advertising this set. At least, I'm pretty sure that's the same set -- I never actually open the e-mails.

do you recommend getting it, xangelx?

I own this set also. It is worth it unless they re-release these seasons on DVD in America sometime. Although you can get it for about $60 at someplaces so it's technically cheaper. I paid $110 for it back in July.

So are there any other good places to purchase this aside from eBay or Amazon Marketplace?

One could also wait and see if the series gets re-released when the movie comes out. I know that whichever company did the movie also has the rights to the cartoon.

that would be the smart thing to do. give us a new R1 box set with all 4 seasons the same day as the new movie comes out.

I don't think that is true. Sony owned the cartoon, then Sony Wonder went down and then they were trying to figure out who was going to release them, and DreamWorks or Paramount weren't one as far as I know. Last I heard Shout Factory was interested.

I have this set. The menus are a bit tedious but the picture quality is good. The set also includes the movie.

There are a few different versions out there. i'd be willing to throw down for a different set if it had better menus.

LLARS, you would upgrade just for better menus? I think that's the first time I've heard someone do that. As a DVD collector myself, i'm just curious, have you done that before?

Well it depends on what it is. The menus on this release are really horrid. In my opinion it would have been better if there wern't any.

I've never done that before, but I do have an obsession with wanting all of my DVD's in Keepcases so everything looks uniform.

I have all the G1 Rhino releases and finally am getting through most of them, I'm up to Season 3 right after the movie....pretty cool stuff, I don't really mind all the glitches, sometimes they're funny :)
