I bet this is the case for alot of re-releases. Double dipping is going to dry up a little I suspect. Why buy the dvd again when you know the Blu-ray is around the corner. I will also be holding out for a blu-ray release.

Color me stupid, but wasn't the Godfather restored already when it came to DVD a few years ago? Can some one help me out.

And I really am waiting for Robert Harris to restore It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad World

It was restored for the initial dvd release, but not too well - good enough for 480p, but it would look horrible in 1080p.

From what I've read, the extent of the "restoration" was just using manual digital touchups on the sub-par transfer for removing larger scars from the image. It wouldn't really surprise me if the transfer was leftover from the last laserdisc release since it does not look like it's from '01.

Now that specs are out, I'm really hoping they split the first film over two discs to allow for optimal compression. Of course, if it's on BluRay, that's a moot point...

Why is it so damn hard to include the original sound mix? I don't give 2 shits about 5.1, especially The Godfather. Whoopty-do.

And at the rate Paramount is heading towards releasing anything on Blu-ray, you may be in for a MAJOR wait!

I'll wait. Seen these movies more times than I can possibly count. No problem waiting. Years even. It'll just be that much better.

Since they paid big $$$ for a photochemical restoration of the original film elements, where's the fucking theatrical 35 mm re-release?

what I've read is that the film's have been transferred via 4K, then downrezzed to standard 2K.

My post was referring to the original DVD. That's why I said it didn't even look like something that had been remastered in 2001.

Great article. Thanks. I've always wondered how they went about restoring films.

The article suggests a September re-release of the trilogy on DVD.

Shouldn't this really be called "The Harris Restoration"?

I hope they bother to put in the original mono mix.
The new 35mm prints that have been struck have it, so why not?
