I only own the older version so I'll pick this one up... cheap.

islandclaws 09-13-07 05:14 PM

Meh. Not enough here to entince me to upgrade my tin. They don't even toss in a DTS mix? WTF? This should have been 2-discs and packed to the gills with bonus crap. I'm not going to spend $15 unless the transfer is so goddamn clean I can see Doug Bradley's balls under his leather apron.

Peep 09-13-07 11:48 PM

I may hold off for the (eventual) Blu-ray release.

Well with the resolution of HD discs.... :D

Nagheenanajar 10-23-07 11:14 AM

It doesn't look like enough to upgrade, but how are the new extras? Is the transfer improved?

Jediturtle 10-23-07 03:18 PM

Anyone know if the audio and/or video have been upgraded on this?

cerial442 10-24-07 07:04 AM

I remember when news of this came out that there would be an upgraded transfer. I'll watch the movie tonight and see if it looks better.

The artwork on the slipcase is really nice.

wago70 10-24-07 10:44 AM

Thanks - looking forward to a review.

There are reviews out there, but unfortunately, none compare the image/sound to previous releases:

Again? How many releases has this thing had now? The horror genre, I swear...

Three in actual content. One came out in the early days of DVD, one came out in 2000, and now this one, the 20th Anniversary.

Expect Nothing New with Anchorbay

cerial442 10-24-07 11:33 PM

Alright, well I watched this tonight along with the interviews. What I'm about to say will cause massive complaints, but it doesn't appear to be a new transfer.

I compared the scene at the end where Frank gets it. The new version appeared a little sharper, but nothing to really jump out at you.

The disc is couple of new features and new trailers. So unless you are a massive Hellraiser fan, hold on to the old one. If you don't have a copy of Hellraiser, go for this one. I'm not upset that I bought this one (I'm giving my old one away). The film still holds up well. The new interviews were really cool, and Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 gets bashed by everyone. No one wanted to be in it, but were contractually required to be.

So now everyone can go back to complaining about Anchor Bay release another version of a film no one is forcing anyone to buy. ;)

Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 gets based by everyone.
And rightly so...

True. But if wouldn't have been for Hellworld then Hellbound would still be my least favorite of them... And in fact I'm a backwards fan... The only sequels I like are 5 & 7. Here. I ADMIT IT!

More like complain about the lack of new title releases -wink-

5 was better than it should have been.

Well they have Hatchet and Girl Next Door (different than the teen comedy one) coming out in December.

Giles 10-25-07 09:41 AM

it's really too bad Anchor Bay/Barker couldn't locate an uncut print for this edition.

I was hoping to hear that the transfer was cleaned up, but I guess I can keep my older release and spend money on other dvds.

Linn1 10-25-07 11:59 AM

And STILL no original soundtrack without the dubbing to make everyone sound American!

wahlers 10-25-07 12:08 PM

An undubbed and uncut version is really just not going to happen.

As far as the edited footage, Barker has stated on the original LaserDisc commentary and/or the later DVD commentary that he liked the cuts made to the film because they made a more intense film that left more to the imagination than some of the latex-ridden effects.

And for the dubbing, the change was made before the final film was completed, so ADR was not done with the original actors, plus more footage was filmed after that decision was made, so a complete version of the film does not exist with the actors' original voices.

But, honestly, the only part of the whole movie that bothers me that would need to have new footage filmed (or CGI) to fix is when Pinhead is putting the pieces of Frank's face back together on the floor at the beginning of the film. The fact that the eyes are a piece of his face, like the whole face is a single solid piece, really bothers me every time I watch it. But, one of the commentaries explained that it was wax and was filmed melting into the floor, but looked crappy and was cut. It would be really nice to film a new insert of just that shot with Doug, though it'd be hard to match the look of the original film...

True and it is better than nothing but I miss the days when some classic gem from the 80s or whatever was announced. AB never seem to release any new (old) titles.

that's because william lustig is gone. hopefully blue underground will start releasing some rare gems instead of re-hashing old AB titles.
