You guys saying you are going to "blind buy" this be warned. I would definitely rent this first or bypass it altogether. Unless you have some nostalgia love for this movie, there is nothing to enjoy. The history and stories behind the movie are far more interesting than the movie itself but even that doesn't lend itself to repeat viewings.

In fairness, this is a bit harsh. "Nothing to enjoy?" I couldn't disagree more, and I've watched this movie a few times over the years since first seeing it on television (and cut) in the mid-70's. I suppose it depends on the viewer's experience, age, tolerance for kitsch, etc., but there is plenty to enjoy in this film, and obviously there are plenty of people who hold this film in good regard, including myself, while understanding any scholarly flaws someone might choose to point out. It's not just blind nostalgia. It's a fun movie. It's a big movie. It's a flawed movie, we know. But it delivers the goods in many ways (production design, costume design, certain performances, the "anything goes" atmosphere, and of course the legendary Bacharach score, among others). If the film wasn't deserving of some kind of special edition treatment—and not just for the fact that it's "technically" a James Bond film—it certainly would never have gotten one.
Would I recommend a "blind buy" (and honestly, I haven't seen too many people in this thread claiming they're going to make it one)? Probably not, unless you know you've got a designer's eye or a real love of hugely outsized parody (not satire). But of those who DO blind-buy it, I suspect there will be some who will make it a keeper.
The soundtrack, on the other hand, I'd recommend as a blind buy without hesitation to any lover of film scores. It's one of Bacharach's most dynamic achievements.
If one wants to see a truly misguided "big name" movie, wait until SKIDOO finally, if ever, makes its way to DVD, or better yet, watch it for free at Google video.
CASINO ROYALE, on the other hand, was intended to be a spoof from the get-go, and while the behind-the-scenes stories are indeed interesting, the resulting film is hardly some kind of unmitigated disaster. Unlike CASINO ROYALE which was just a big, unruly ball of madness, SKIDOO actually tried to be a satirical commentary on a generation and culture its makers clearly didn't understand, and that's just embarrassing.

The FLINT films are amazing. But so is CASINO ROYALE. And each for its own reasons.
