I am aware of that. In my post, I talk about how I dont like the closed captions and prefer subtitles. Did you not read my post?

I stopped by Best Buy today and bought Wild Hogs and forgot to check if it has CC. While I drive, I look in the back of DVD and saw no "CC' marked, but "SDH." I thought "oh craps, not other one!" I came home and insert the DVD then play it. The black highlight with white text popped on. Whew!

If studio decided to screw us with CC or Open Caption, I would stop collect any DVD.

The ULead DVD Player software on my computer can display old-style closed-captions, so seems strange that there's no way to retain them over HDMI. Is anybody working on that, or have they pretty much written it off? That might be why Universal never used captions, and other studios may be abandoning them. Guess I'll need an extra S-Video input on whatever new TV I get though so I can still see them.

My Philips DVD recorder retains the captions on old tapes and laserdiscs I've transferred to it; even when run through the video editing programs on my computer they've stayed intact, along with the scrolling text services on Text 1 and 2 that the ABC network used in the 80s.

Some "SDH" DVDs have the exact same text on the subtitles and captions, except sometimes the captions are in all-caps while the subtitles are in upper and lower-case, but some appear to be from different transcriptions for whatever reason. One I recently checked said "Are you going to-" on the subtitles while the captions said "You gonna-". Most Fox discs on the subtitles just show "(singing)" when someone is singing, while the captions show the words being sung with musical notes next to them as is usually done.

Huh. I guess I finally understand what this thread is about now. So you prefer the television generated captions as opposed to the DVD player generated subtitles for the hearing impaired. Honestly, I can't even remember the last time I watched a DVD with closed captioning on so I completely forgot about it.

So, with HD DVD & Blu-Ray, there will be no closed caption or caption placed on various parts of the screen to show who is talking - just plainly, cheapy foreign-style subtitles?

I know some HDTV included CC device, I'm not sure about the HD DVD/Blu-Ray.

Last few days, I have been watching Rome season 2 and the first 3 discs showed closed caption (black background with white text). But disc #4 and #5 doesn't have closed caption at all. I had to switch to foreign-style subtitle to finish up the final 4 eposides of Rome.

I have seen it on HBO and it showed closed captioned whole season. I don't understand why they put closed caption on first 3 discs and then removed on last 2 discs.

Occasionally captions will just not work on a particular player. My old Pioneer won't put out the caption signal on Thank God It's Friday or season 2 of the Partridge Family, but they do show up when played on other players. Maybe that's what happened with the Rome discs.

I just got a DVD recorder with a digital TV tuner (will probably have to take it back since its discs don't play right on my old player)- it down-rezes HDTV to regular TV resolution, but lo and behold old-style closed-captions still show up on it. There's also the option to have the tuner put the captions onscreen which I thought was the standard way of doing it, but my TV is also decoding them. Not really anything worth watching on TV even in digital, but I was curious to check it out.

For the longest time I thought that closed captions didn't work with my cheapie DVD player. Turns out there is a menu option (which defaults to ON) that blocks the closed captioning signal from reaching the TV. Very irritating.

There are Closed Captioning on Fox Blu-Rays, I also see SDH used as well on some discs from Warner & Paramount.
