I heard that The Last Emperor was bumped to 2008

Is that the most ever charged for a single film. This set does look nice though and the
movie sounds interesting but that is way too much for a blind buy.

Already have the old Lady Vanishes and the new one doesn't look impressive enough to double dip.

That will probably get under $57 during the DVDPlanet 20% off sale.

zombeaner 08-15-07 08:52 PM

I'll be ordering The Lady Vanishes and seriously considering Berlin Alexanderplatz.

and

The Browning Version
Unfaithfully Yours
Clean, Shaven

However, as noted above, generally if it has a commentary, it will be an upper price tier release.

Yes, Salo would make a great 'gag' gift.

Just noticed that Crook's Tour is included on Lady Vanishes; this makes it worth a rental for me now. I wouldn't buy it, personally, because this is one of the only Hitchcock films I dislike, but it's a nice looking upgrade.

Actually, December would be an appropriate month to release Salò, if you consider an interesting junction of film, literary, and religious history. The final vignette of Luis Buñuel's L'Âge d'Or was inspired by the conclusion of De Sade's 120 Days of Sodom and ends with a exhausted Christ figure emerging from a castle after four months of depraved acts. Pasolini was most likely familiar with Buñuel's film. DVDSavant notes that L'Âge d'Or "must have been a core inspiration" for Pasolini's Salò.

I almost bought the previous Criterion release last weekend. I might have to wait out for this new release.

Haha, I almost bought it myself about 2-3 days ago, but somebody informed me I ought to wait. Exciting news for me.

mikelowry 08-16-07 01:09 AM

Drunken Angel looks interesting but I'm not if I'll pick any of these November releases.

Apone 08-16-07 01:25 AM

On the subject of Kurosawa, Criterion needs to re-issue High and Low.

MTRodaba2468 08-16-07 02:07 AM

The Lady Vanishes sounds like a safe bet for my DVD collection.

And I wasn't aware that they were working on The Last Emperor. Another safe bet. :)

Criterion provided this reply the other day:

"We would like to rerelease High & Low at some point, but there’s nothing on the schedule at this time. Thanks for your email!"

Although Berlin Alexanderplatz more than makes up for it.

Looking forward to Berlin Alexanderplatz. I was renting them one by one on VHS from Cinefile here in LA, but then they sold the whole set to some musician before I could finish.

And The Lady Vanishes, while exciting, seems like a somewhat random title to revisit...

Not really random. Their earlier release is actually missing about 20-30 seconds of footage. Nothing to write home about, but it's an embarrassment to a company like Criterion that prides itself on releasing definitive edition. Hitchcock is also a big name, so a re-release of one his films is a pretty safe bet.

pro-bassoonist 08-16-07 01:17 PM

Fassbinder will be bought. Bergman...I hope some of his titles, Tinsel included, start coming out on Blu-Ray through Tartan. The rest I am not interested in.

Giles 08-16-07 01:26 PM

the one director that seems to get little to nothing released stateside or even in the UK for that matter is Peter Greenaway - I really really wish Criterion could a) either release his films via their main library or b) through the eclipse series...

Prospero's Books
Baby of Macon
Tulse Luper Trilogy

How so? On first glance, it seemed to be the worst cover art for these new titles. It's a floating head!

Giles 08-16-07 02:20 PM

I'd buy 'The Lady Vanishes' just for this extra

Crook's Tour, a 1941 feature-length Charters and Caldicott adventure, available for the first time on home video, with Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne reprising their beloved The Lady Vanishes roles

Kerborus 08-16-07 06:06 PM

Praise Jesus! Er, I mean Praise Criterion!!!! I will own all 4!

Kerborus 08-16-07 06:07 PM

PS - Meh to Kurosawa? I'm always excited to see his work announced and would love for ALL of his work to get Criterion treatment. That's just me I guess...

PopcornTreeCt 08-16-07 06:12 PM

I agree with you Kerborus. I'll certainly take more Kurosawa over something like Sweet Movie. It must be a pretty good month if people are complaining about more Kurosawa.

zombeaner 08-16-07 06:16 PM

I enjoy Sweet Movie.
