Dawn of the Dead: UE is my personal favorite. The Lord of the Rings: EE sets are probably the most comprehensive ever done for a film series.

James Bond sets. I never owned the earlier releases, so maybe all the special features are copied.......but the sets are impressive nonetheless
Same goes for Superman and LOTR EE |
-LOTR: EE
-Blade Runner 5-disc will have to up there if not THE choice -Dawn of the Dead: UE |
XAge, were there any other editions of T2 that gave us more special features not offered in the Ultimate and Extreme (and I do have the Extreme, btw)?
|
LOTR: EE
The Matrix Collection Ultimate Superman Collection |
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the 3-disc Panic Room set.
|
Wizard of Oz 3 disk
|
Good choices so far. Without repeating some picks I'll throw out:
Toy Story: Ultimate Toy Box Gladiator 2-disc (an oldie but goodie) |
The Ape Head is pretty comprehensive.
|
Gone with the Wind 4DVD
Superman - The Ultimate Collection |
Anchor Bay's Dawn of the Dead - Ultimate Edition
|
I suppose it depends on how you define "DVD set" if it includes any box set then I'd say "Essential Art House: 50 Years of Janus Films - The Criterion Collection." If it's only one particular film, then I'd go with the forthcoming Blade Runner set.
|
Superman immediately springs to mind, but I think that's comprehensive more from the point of including the entire series itself, rather than the making of the films. So in that regard, Superman wins it for me. Maybe even Alien Quadrilogy with the multiple cuts of each film, or better yet - the Planet of the Apes ape head set.
In terms of making-of, I'd have to go with the LOTR: EE sets. |

In terms of making-of, I'd have to go with the LOTR: EE sets. Though I have a feeling the Blade Runner briefcase set may take the cake... |
For 1 Film
-Blade Runner 5 Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition -Dawn of the Dead:Ultimate Edition For Series -Alien Quadrilogy -Matrix Ultimate Collector's Edition Box Set -Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition Box Set |
Kingdom of Heaven DC was pretty good and also the Black Hawk Down 3-disc.

Since it doesn't exist yet, the Criterion release of Brazil takes it for now for a single film release. 2 versions of the film and plenty of extras. For a multiple film set release .. don't know. |
i will say Superman UE, Matrix UE, Alien headset.
|
I think King Kong (1933) is pretty comprehensive.

It is, considering the fact that so much footage probably was locked up so tight inside the vaults and the DVD producers still managed to get original drawings, scripts, and lost footage out from them. |

Can there be a separate subcategory for Most Comprehensive DVD for People Who Just Aren't That Interested In How Special Effects Are Done? I totally get why some people dig that sort of stuff, I'm just not one of them. I prefer outtakes, alternate versions or endings, well-done commentaries and/or documentaries, and other goodies.
Having said that, I nominate: Almost Famous: Untitled - The Bootleg Cut Short Cuts (Criterion) From Dusk Till Dawn (the version with Full Tilt Boogie included) (P.S. - Agreeance with the folks who have mentioned the Seinfeld sets and the various Kevin Smith titles.) |
Hot Fuzz [HD-DVD] has over 11-12 hours of bonus features.
