And that means????? What film, what film?

I'm thinking it's this or this - probably the latter since it is not out on DVD yet and Criterion has already put out one of the director's other films.

My guess is that Chevalier refers to Maurice Chevalier.

But it could be anything.

I was hoping for Innocents of Paris (the raccoon makes me think 1920s) but I think that was before Eddy's first film, so the cutting in line confuses me

The cartoon animals rarely have anything to do with the clue itself. I also highly doubt that it's Love Me Tonight; I don't think Criterion has ever released a title that Kino already put out.

It's almost certainly The Merry Widow. They have a good working relationship with Universal, who own the rights. And they love Lubitsch. Of course, The Smiling Liuetenant or The Love Parade would be just as welcome.

Speaking of Universal, with that little blurb about Rian Johnson, could we possibly see a Brick Criterion? Please oh please.

Merry Widow is Warner Bros., so that's a no go. I think it's safe to say it's The Love Parade that Criterion will be releasing, yet another in their string of Paramount titles.

Ah, I had forgotten that. Then I guess the most logical choice is The Love Parade -- and another pre-1930 film goes into the Criterion Collection. Good for them!

Still, it would be nice if they pair it up with another one, like The Smiling Lieutenant. You can never have too much Lubitsch around.

probably more along the lines of a straight to criterion release of "the brothers bloom" his latest film. i can easily see criterion supporting rian johnson the way they support wes anderson.

Actually, Criterion released The Tin Drum, which was a Kino DVD at one point, and even included the Kino commentary. A few Kino VHS releases also found their way into Criterion's pocket (Diary of a Country Priest comes to mind). Though I don't think Criterion will put out the Mamoulian film, as Kino seems rather proud of it.

Personally, I'm hoping for an Eclipse set of Lubitsch / Chevalier films. It seems more likely to be an Eclipse set, though I'll gladly pay out the nose for a lavish set. Lubitsch deserves it, and so far, Warner and everyone else has been pretty skimpy with his major films.

I've only seen one Lubitsch so far, and assuming this is a sign of more to come, I look forward to seeing what they have in the works...

First, Criterion has indeed released films already done by Kino. Alexander Nevsky and the Tin Drum come to mind.

Second, The Merry Widow is owned by WB. My guess is Love Me Tonight or the Love Parade.

I wouldn't be opposed to a Brick Criterion, although I think it'll probably be like riotinmyskull said.

While I loved Brick a Criterion would be unnecessary. What would they include they don't already have? There are more extras in the UK but that's it.

Well, I assume like other Michael Bay films, TRANSFORMERS will get the Criterion release!;)

You're mistaken on Alexander Nevsky, I believe. Kino never released that on DVD; Image did. You're right about Tin Drum, though. I had forgotten about that one. However, that was clearly a case of Kino losing the rights. Their version is out-of-print. Love Me Tonight is very much still in print. And I'm sticking to my guns on that one -- I don't think Criterion will step on Kino's toes on that title. (Criterion and Kino seem to give each other pretty wide latitude once one company puts out a particular film on DVD, so I tend to think of The Tin Drum as the exception that proves the rule.)

As I already acknowledged a few posts above yours, I had simply forgotten that WB picked up the rights due to the MGM re-make.

Obviously, I wasn't counting VHS. VHS rights are totally different from DVD rights, so most films released on VHS by one independent distributor are up for grabs by others.

Hopefully, though, that wouldn't make Brick Rian Johnson's Bottle Rocket. Brick desperately needs an upgrade from that terrible audio mix on the current DVD.
