Steelbook question

Hello Friends,

I just purchased the FIGHT CLUB, THE OMEN and DIE HARD steelbooks today. However, what's the deal with the seal leaving this sticky residue all along the top of the case. What is the best way to get this shit off? Thanx guys.

KC

This has been discussed before but I used Goo-Gone and it got the residue off...

I hate that, I have just been taking a knife and cutting down the center, leaving the sticker on, but Goo-Gone sounds like a better idea. I was so happy when I opened Spawn and noticed they didn't put the sticker on it.

Won't goo-gone stain the case?

Rubbing alcohol works great with no residue.

I used it on the Fight Club case and it looks fine.

Simple vegetable oil works great for me.

Steel wool.

No, but goo-gone will leave an odor. The maintenance peope use it for stickers and gum and by god it smells like absolute hell. They "cleaned" a stainless steel lighter for me once, and I couldn't keep it with me for a month due to the stench.

*edit* A quick after-thought put into my mind that what they used was "Goop-off." I'm thinking cheaper version, but same thing.

I used Citrus Goo-Gone, so now all my steelbooks smell like fruit.

Thanx for the info guys. Where do I get this GOO-GONE? Hardware store? Grocery store?

Ken, you can get that stuff at almost any grocery and 5-and-dime you can imagine. Pop in your local Wally or Target and you'll find it. I, too, strongly recommend GooGone-age.

an exacto knife through the security strip is my new goo-gone

you can even use sticky tape; just keep applying and lifting until the gum starts to lift off. you'll probably go thru a few pieces of tape, but with enough patience it'll all come off.

I used duck tape and did it very gently, worked like a charm with a couple hits. Got the goo off the Die Hard sb, Fight Club sb and Cast Away sb. You can use it on plastic dvd cases to but do not use on paper.

another question about Steelbook maintenance:

I have a few of them and I've noticed that the surface finish is starting to flake off, exposing the interior metal. It is very minute and only at the corner edges at this point but it's noticeable on all of them upon close examination. The length of time I've had them is not that long - ranging from a few weeks to a month or two - and they've only been subjected to normal shelf wear (basically sitting on the shelf). I did not expect this as I thought Steelbooks would be less prone to wear than normal dvd cases. Is anyone else experiencing this? Has anyone's steelbook case deteriorated badly in terms of the coating?

darmok 08-01-07 11:04 AM

the same thing happens with die-cast models -- i leave them in a glass display, hardly ever handling it, and somehow the paint still manages to chip off, especially around edges. guess the paint is subject to wear from exposure to the air (moisture, drying, etc). i have my steelbooks in digest-sized comic bags that fit them perfectly; works great!
