THE SOPRANOS: Season Six, Part II - 10/23/07

From tvshowsondvd.com:

"The Sopranos - Season 6, Part 2 is the highly anticipated conclusion of the long-running HBO series surrounding mob boss Tony Soprano, and his life with both "families". The highly publicized conclusion of the program's final season made the news recently, and HBO Home Video and Warner Home Video are bringing this home on October 23rd. There will be a 4-DVD set running $99.98 SRP, and HBO will release hi-def versions on both the HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc formats, too (pricing is TBA).

The 9 episodes, which are nominated for 15 Emmy awards, will be joined by several extras, including 2 Featurettes and a number of Commentary Tracks:

* Making "Cleaver": Behind the scenes of Christopher's horror film
* The Music of The Sopranos: Creator David Chase, cast and crew discuss the songs from the show
* Four audio commentaries with cast members Dominic Chainese, Robert Iler, Arthur Nascarella, Steven R. Schirripa and Stevie Van Zandt"

So that is 9 episodes for $99.99 (Average of $11.11 per episode).
I about had a coronary when I saw the price for this set but it doesnt really surprise me in the least I guess.
I will have to pick this set up since the Sopranos is my favorite Tv series ever but the price on this set will finally make say goodbye to hbo.
They seriously need to take a cue from showtime which has better shows now and better dvd sets with MUCH more reasonable pricing.
Lets see HBO try to charge $100 for John From Cincinnati. I think I would piss myself if i saw that.

The 2 Featurettes aren't new to this DVD -- they aired on HBO.

chris_sc77 07-29-07 10:40 PM

Yeah i think the Cleaver one was about 12 min. long and the music one was like 25 minutes if i remember correctly.

Cosmic Bus 07-29-07 10:59 PM

Pretty irritating that they're charging full price for this, but so be it. I'll just wait it out as I have for pt. 1... There's bound to be a decent deal on that one eventually.

DeanoBKN 07-29-07 11:19 PM

It'll be what, $60 on release week? That's fair enough I guess...awh listen to me, letting HBO once again take my money. Thankfully the only show I have left to complete is Entourage, which is only $40 SRP a season

It is smart business on their end. They know people who want this will really want it to complete their sets. I just hate the fact that they are flagrantly gouging their customers. More and more studio's are doing this (i.e. releasing season sets in two parts) so that they can charge a whole lot more per season.

IIRC, Part 1 was about the same price as other season sets and had the same number of discs and episodes. Part II has 3 fewer episodes so in that case, it should be slightly cheaper, but it's still not at rip-off stage IMO.

And of course, there will be the inevitable Complete Series set released just before Christmas. I'm calling it.

Look at what they did w/ 'Sex and the City'...

Season 1 12 Episodes $39.99
Season 2 18 Episodes $49.99
Season 3 18 Episodes $49.99
Season 4 18 Episodes $49.99
Season 5 8 Episodes $49.99
Season 6, part 1 12 Episodes $49.99
Season 6, part 2 8 Episodes $49.99

But as one person does point out... Whereas most tv shows make a profit from commercails HBO does not, and thus they use DVD sales to make some of their money back...

HBO more or less confirmed that awhile back. Should be out by the end of next year.

There making craploads every month when we pay our HBO bill!!

chris_sc77 07-30-07 09:13 AM

Yeah not only are they making money from our HBO bills every month but Showtime usually has only been charging $39.99 per season for their releases. or only $29.99 for brotherhood or sleeper cell which makes me really pissed at HBO.

You think the MSRP on JFC won't be $99? Of course it will be.

slop101 07-30-07 10:47 AM

With the complete Sopranos set coming out by Christmas, I'm gonna skip this.

I'm pretty sure the "per-episode" price of the complete box set will be way less than in the individual seasons, especially if I get it from Costco, which for comparison's sake, Six Feet Under's complete box set (Costco price) came out to just under $3 per episode.
Not to mention the complete set will have more extras and better packaging...

DVD Giant 07-30-07 11:04 AM

Since I own every season of Sopranos, I will be buying this since I have no need for the complete collection.

Dane Marvin 07-30-07 11:08 AM

What a crappy price.

islandclaws 07-30-07 11:30 AM

I've been used to this shitty price since S1 came out and I paid something like $80 on sale for it. I have all the sets so far so I'll just bite the bullet and pick this up on sale. I'm guessing $54.99 on sale.

bookcase3 07-30-07 11:52 AM

I like the nice packaging for the Sopranos season sets, so I'll complete the collection with this final set. I'm sure the complete collection will have some cool packaging, but that doesn't get me to re-buy what I already own, the same as Sex and the City and Six Feet Under sets. Those complete collections are more for people who don't own them, and die-hard collectors.

Randy810 07-30-07 02:24 PM

Do you think that maybe they will release a complete season 6 set?

DumDum 07-30-07 04:13 PM

Hmm, no alternate ending?

I haven't bought a single sopranos season so I am waiting for the complete series box set.

kingtopher 07-30-07 09:28 PM

The least they could have done for such a steep price was make a really complete feature-length documentary that explores the entire series' history.

No. This, and then a full series set in 08.
