Yes, I did notice the difference in the main title up to the cast credits, which were the same on both. Why did Universal see fit to make this change at the time?
Probably to add the MPAA approval stamp (and their copyright notice).


Is there any truth to the rumour that a 35mm print was turned up in recent years? People have commented that the clips in the Photoplay Chaney documantary look to be from a 35mm source...probably speculation on their part?
It wasn't. In fact, I know the exact print they used, which was indeed 16mm. It was just carefully mastered and cleaned up (the advantage you have to restoring ten or fifteen seconds of film as opposed to the entire feature).

Regardless, I'm glad David Shepard had a chance to go back and spruce up the previous release. I've noticed he has periodically went back and revisited titles when a better print has come his way, as with NOSFERATU and THE CAT AND THE CANARY.

The Charlie Chaplin DVDs he produced for Image are superior to the later Warner releases. If you have them, hang on to them...
