Why doesn't Universal release "Rich Man, Poor Man"
Rich Man, Poor Man: A superb 12-hour adaptation of Irwin Shaw's novel, chronicling the widely divergent values and paths of two brothers over 20 years. The compelling story of familial jealousy and heartbreak was an extraordinarily successful miniseries, garnering a record 23 Emmy nominations (it won four), and helped launch the career of Nick Nolte, who plays the free-spirited and unruly Tom Jordache.
Does anyone know why Universal has yet to release this 1976 mini-series on any video format? What's the problem? Rich Man, Poor Man Cast Peter Strauss: Rudy Jordache Nick Nolte: Tom Jordache Susan Blakely: Julie Prescott Abbott Jordache Edward Asner: Axel Jordache Dorothy McGuire: Mary Jordache Bill Bixby: Willie Abbott Ray Milland: Duncan Calderwood Robert Reed: Teddy Boylan Kim Darby: Virginia Calderwood Gloria Grahame: Sue Prescott Craig Stevens: Asher Berg George Maharis: Joey Quales Lynda Day George: Linda Quales Steve Allen: Nichols Norman Fell: Smitty Talia Shire: Teresa Sanjoro Van Johnson: Marsh Goodwin Dorothy Malone: Irene Goodwin Kay Lenz: Kate Jordache Murray Hamilton: Sid Gossett Mike Evans: Arnold Simms Dick Butkus: Al Fanducci Fionnula Flanagan: Clothilde Tim McIntire: Brad Knight Lawrence Pressman: Bill Denton Dennis Dugan: Claude Tinker Jo Ann Harris: Gloria Bartley Roy Jenson: Pete Tierney Anthony Carbone: Lou Martin Ed Barth: Papadakis |
I'd love to see this on DVD. I remember what a big to do this was when it originally aired. This was one of the first, if not the very first, mini-series. I don't recall which character had an eye-patch, but I remember there was a scene or two where it would be on the other eye.

£46 for the two DVDs would make it about $90 American! I guess I'm more poor man than rich man for this release.

GReat Miniseries. I would definately buy book 1 and 2. There are so many miniseries that I would love to see including: Kane and Abel, Marco Polo and Brotherhood of the Rose etc.

Because Universal SUCKS when it comes to releasing their titles on dvd...

There are a ton of great cinema for small screen and big screen that we may never see on dvd in are lifetime. |
Colleen Benn! WAKE UP !!!!
Thank you Hammer99 for the links to the Region 2 releases. I knew that Rich Man, Poor Man hadn't been released in the United States but I was unaware that a PAL DVD version had been released in Region 2...and almost five (5) years ago as well!!! (July 15, 2002)
Does this region 2 release indicate that there are no rights problems? Is it just a matter of bumping Universal to put this out? For Pizza: It was the Nick Nolte character (Tom Jordache) who ended up with an eye patch. If memory serves, Tom falls in with a rough crowd and gets pretty well beat up at one point. Tom triumphs, however, and achieves genuine peace and happiness --- becoming the "rich man" to his brother Rudy's morally corrupt "poor man". It's been 31 years since I've seen Rich Man, Poor Man and I still remember Nick Nolte's final scene. Somebody tell Universal's Colleen Benn to start working on this one! |
Note to Universal Home Video: [on knees] PLEASE !!!! [/on knees]
