Updates on the rumored Psycho re-release?

I read a few months back that it was rumored Universal was releasing Legacy editions of both Psycho and The Birds. Anyone heard any updates? They were suppose to come out in Sept. If that's the case I think the studio would have said something by now. Thanks.

This would be great news I hope that the rumours are true !

The triple-feature set of the sequels is coming on August 14th, so maybe it's timed for that.

It'll probably just be the Masterpiece Collection DVD, with a second disc containing the making-of (which is on the bonus disc in the box set). The only things that could be added are a music-only track (present on one of the laserdiscs) and a commentary (not really needed since the documentary is so comprehensive).

Universal is not so cheap these days. I expect a new historian commentary, and an all-new documentary plus all the Masterpiece DVD extras and a new transfer.

I'm defenitly getting this! I was wanting to get it before but it went OOP before I could get my hands on it but I'm glad I couldn't get it then because this is better! :)

Are the new releases of Vertigo, Rear Window, and Psycho new transfers and new extras from those found in the Masterpiece collection?

wm lopez 07-07-08 06:12 PM

I was hoping for a PSYCHO boxset of all 4 movies.

The Monkees 07-07-08 06:12 PM

What happened to the Psycho Legacy Documentary that covers all 4 movies? Is this going to be released separately?

Some new extras - the commentaries (except for one of the commentaries on Vertigo) are new, and 2-3 of the featurettes for each movie are new. Most of the features, and maybe the transfers, are ported over from the last time Universal released these.

Oh, and the episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, which have been released elsewhere, but never paired with his movies. I guess that could qualify as a "new feature."

Dustin P. 07-07-08 08:15 PM

love the movie, so this is a definate buy for me :)

Groucho 07-07-08 09:17 PM

Sounds great. I own Rebello's book, and have read through it more than once. Perfect guy to get for the commentary.

Al_Tahoe 07-07-08 09:56 PM

OMG... I am soooo getting this! :rock2: :bdance:

That is beautiful, I hope they continue with the legacy packaging and not go to normal keepcases.

nitin77 07-08-08 03:21 AM

any idea if the transfer is meant to be remastered (again)?

rfduncan 07-08-08 08:41 AM

Why no Blu-ray release, Universal?!?! :grunt:

I'm sure it will be along eventually. Being a Blu-ray owner myself, I feel your disappointment, but I also haven't given up on DVD and we need this DVD release. Psycho (1960) deserves to have a standalone DVD release with an anamorphic transfer. This should be the definitive DVD release. The next stop will be Blu-ray. Yeah, it's a shame they aren't releasing both at the same time, but what can you do?

Looking through my collection, there are a lot of DVD titles that I want released on Blu-ray that haven't been announced yet. (Mean Girls, Can't Hardly Wait, Showgirls, A Nightmare on Elm Street (specifically 1, 3, and 4) Friday the 13th (1-6) Halloween (2, 4-8 and remake) Black Christmas (1974 and 2006) just to name a very select few. I wish the studios would hurry up, but given that the format war has been over for only four and a half months now, it's easy to understand why there are so few Blu-ray releases.

The Monkees 07-08-08 02:39 PM

I hate to ask this again, but does anyone know what is going on with the Psycho Legacy documentary?

They're probably going to keep the MC 16x9 remaster, which looks fantastic. Out of all of Universal's Hitchcock films and judging from the quality of the MC remasters, the titles most likely to shine on BluRay would be Psycho, Rope, The Birds, Vertigo, and Rear Window. The last is a grainy film, but you'd be surprised by how film-like their transfer looks.

wm lopez 07-08-08 06:23 PM

Don't like the cover.
Why the yellowish tint?
It's a black & white movie not THE GODFATHER pt 2.

All the Legacy series I have seen have that yellow tint to it, I own Franeknstein, The Mummy and To Kill a Mockingbird and they are all like that.

pvdfan 07-09-08 04:08 AM

Is this now the 4th release of Psycho now? I love the movie, buying this now a 3rd time is a bit much.

Darth Maher 07-09-08 10:09 AM

I own the Collector's Edition, but I'll definitely be picking this up.

Will make for a fun Halloween season purchase.

Of course, I plan to have a Blu-ray player by then so I will most likely be cursing Universal up and down for a lack of a BD. :D

The digital Bits reported that The Hitchcock 2-disks (and Touch of Evil) are DVD only for now.
