Mann's Last of the Mohican's... OOP??
 

I've been told this is out of print, both the DTS version and the extended director's cut.... Can anybody confirm and is a new release on the horizon?

According to DVD Aficianado, the extended version is out of print but the DTS version is still in print.

Hey, thanks for the link... After reading some comments about the "butchered" directors cut, I might pick up the region 2 version of the original theatrical cut.

that's what I did and I don't regret it for a second. Sure, you don't get Mann's commentary, but screw it.

There is no commentary on the Director's Cut version.

I've been waiting for a R1 theatrical cut for a long time, I really hope this means we might see one soon.

It is kinda strange that it never was released. Especially after all the acclaim that it received.

Ah! I thought it did. Now the Region 1 is even more useless to me.

Thief is another case--the Region 1 is a "director's cut" (really, just a revised version years after the fact--there's no reason that the original cinema cut can't be called "director's cut"), but has the Mann/Caan commentary from the LD. I would give my left nut for a restored anamorphic 1981 cinema cut of Thief.

How was it butchered?

scenes cut, others added, an unecessary monologue was added over the closing scene, great lines were removed, music was changed...

But, some people prefer the new cut.

Brazil has the theatrical cut if you've got a region free player.

I don't buy too many international DVDs. (The only one I own is the Army of Darkness director's cut from Asia.) But I would like to get the theatrical version of Mohicans. Can anyone recommend where I can buy the Brazilian version new? (And is it NTSC?)

It is NTSC. I own it. It's a nice release.

EDIT: Oops! I should ask one more thing. I can't remember - but weren't there scenes in this movie that had English subtitles? If so, do those still appear on the region 4 version, or do I have to manually turn them on and off while I'm watching the movie?

Those subs w/ the Huron, etc are burned into the image so you are fine. Audio is English and you can turn off the player generated English subs for the audio.

Just wanted to provide an update on the Brazilian version of LOTM. I finally got it and was able to watch it last night. I couldn't be more happy to finally own the theatrical version of this movie. Thanks again to badlieut, because I really had no idea that this was available on DVD. (And I wish I knew why Michael Mann can't allow both versions to be released in the U.S.) My LD can finally be set free.

For those not wanting to go this route because they don't have a region-free DVD player - there are alternatives. A lot of players (like mine) have a hack where you punch in a sequence of numbers on the remote and it becomes region free. And there's (ahem) another way around it as well. :)

I have never seen Mann's revised cut and I never want to. I wish he had enough sense to leave things alone.

Now if there's an anamorphic cinema cut of Thief somewhere in the world, please tell us!

I'm still trying to figure out why Mann would change the great final line of the movie. That alone makes me never want to see it again. (But there are many other questionable changes as well.)

Is there an English version of that DVDWorld page? What's the approximate cost in US$?

I guess the DC is the only version I've ever seen. I'd like to see the theatrical since so many people prefer it.

Most importantly, CDPoint will ship within a couple of days. I tried DVDWorld first, and they emailed me a request for all of this documentation I had to fax to complete my order. I just wanted to buy a DVD - not apply for Brazilian citizenship! :)

according to dvdcompare,the DTS version which is still in print is better than the OOP release because it's anamorphic and it's the extended version too...so why do you want the old release????
