Army of Darkness- June Rerelease?

I was surfing Best Buy.com and noticed they had a DVD (not HD) listed as $24.99 to be released on June 26th. Can this be confirmed by anyone?

Mr. Cinema 05-20-07 10:36 AM

That is for the HD DVD. Universal released Army of Darkness last year as a HD DVD/DVD combo disc. They are re-releasing it in June as a HD DVD only disc.

unless it is a mistake...probably is..

I'm sure it is a mistake. I doubt Best Buy is charging $24.99 for a dvd re-release of that film.

Just randomly, do you mind my asking what the best version of the film is available on DVD? Amazon has a lot listed and it is safe to say I am VERY confused on what to get.

Unfortuantely the best version out there is in Region 3 format (released by MGM).

Thus if you still pursue the best (in R1 that is) then get the HD/DVD combo and play the DVD side of it.

Anchor Bay lost the rights to the film and they went back to Universal. So far, they have no plans of a dvd re-release. Their current version from what I've read is not the best of quality. The HD DVD looks good for such a low budget film, but for dvd, at least in Region 1, I would say Anchor Bay's Boomstick Edition is the route to go. But it's also OOP, so you may have to pay a bit more for it. If you have a region free player, I think the Region 3 version probably offers the best pic quality of any of the dvd versions.

Amazon is big mess when trying to find out DVD edition specifics. As has been posted, the best DVD of the Director's Cut is the R3 MGM. I prefer the original cinema cut, and unfortunately the best version of that is in the DVD side of the HD-DVD combo.

Oh how I love the R3 Director's Cut. It's so pretty.

tylergfoster 05-20-07 02:00 PM

Anchor Bay lost the rights? I hope they get them back. Not because I want to see a billion more releases but come on, they ARE going to complete the damn "book" trilogy aren't they?

Unfortunately? Xage, start considering non-R1 editions, it's fun! I'm serious.

If you want the best transfer of the film -- seriously -- the R1 HD-DVD combo is the way to go for SD.

However, the two-disc limited edition (or later re-released as the Boomstick Edition) for those who want the extras as all of those are owned by Anchor Bay.

The Valeyard 05-20-07 03:06 PM

If it is a DVD release, technically wouldn't be a re-re-re-re-re-release?

OwlAtHome 05-20-07 03:48 PM

Even after all the releases I was hoping for A Book of The Dead version for Amry of Darkness, they can use the R3 transfer. Maybe when you pull the hear it screams "I'll swallow your soul!"

captainjoe 05-20-07 09:03 PM

HD-DVD SD side is the best transfer and the HD side is absolutely amazing.

xage is on the money. If you're looking for the theatrical version, get the HD DVD/DVD combo, and -- assuming you don't have an HD DVD player -- just play the standard DVD side.

If you're looking for the 'directors cut' version, there's really no acceptable transfer of that in Region 1. The R3 MGM edition is pretty darn tasty, though...

is this one anamorphic, and, if not, are any of the R1 releases besides the HD combo anamorphic?

You linked to the only one that's not. :)

Two.

Universal R1
Anchor Bay 2-disc SE
Anchor Bay Director's Cut LE
Anchor Bay Special Edition
Anchor Bay Boomstick Edition
Universal Combo HD-DVD
[Universal HD-DVD]

And potentially a new SD DVD, and perhaps even the Book of the Dead version.

project86 05-21-07 08:41 PM

they better make a book of the dead version, or what about the cabin they were talking about a while back?

ughhh.
