apocalypto wrong aspect ratio??

the apocalypto dvd backcover states the ratio as 1,85, whereas imdb lists it as 2,35.
is this just a printing mistake on the dvd cover, or are we being presented the wrong aspect ratio?

Egon's Ghost 05-09-07 09:29 AM

Ah, the new full screen.

Giles 05-09-07 09:30 AM

as I recall in the theatre it was 1.85

You are correct.

philip74 05-09-07 11:53 AM

so why is the trailer and the imdb lisiting 2;35 then?

dcprules 05-09-07 12:02 PM

Yep, definitely 1.85:1 I remember being surprised by the aspect ratio when I saw it theatrically. Can't wait to get the Blu Ray

i definitely agree with you on that point, but that still doesnt explain the fact why the trailer is 2,35?
also sme european dvd releases are listed as 2,35?

abintra 05-09-07 01:34 PM

Not sure James Berardinelli is foolproof either but his review does state 1.85:1 also.

Mr. Salty 05-09-07 02:46 PM

Please note how aspect ratios are written ----> 2.35:1 | 1.85:1 | 4:3 | 16:9

imdb.com is not always correct. And trailers are created in different aspect ratios all the time!

A recent example I've seen is on the old Predator 2 dvd(which I just picked up). The film itself is 1.85:1 OAR, but the trailer is matted to 2.35:1.

noahtc 05-09-07 07:37 PM

Yeah, the dvd for the good son has the trailer which is in 2:35.1 but t he film is 1:85.1

Skoobooz 05-09-07 07:48 PM

Same with Little Shop of Horrors.

trailers are often made in different ARs to match the AR of the film they are going to be shown in front of in the theater.

I have made several corrections on a few IMDb's entry - some of them are film duration (most of them being 4% shorter than actual duration, possibly due because the original entry was entered by someone with PAL DVDs), and some other stuff.

I'll try to correct the Apocalypto thing - it may take a week or two before (or if) they approve the changes. IMDb cannot always be trusted as an accurate source.

so what did you write to them about the correct aspect ratio correction - by stating the DVD is 1.85 and those (like myself) who saw it that way in the theatre, I thought imdb was kind of anal in terms of being very specific and having relient proof of corrections like this.

I don't know if that always the case, I've seen movies where the feature is in 1.85 and the films/trailers that are 2.35 and shown as such (letterboxed - with those annoying black bars above and below the image ;) ).

I just follow their update/correction procedure. I just have to fill some form with drop down box with all the aspect ratio in it. Usually they have to confirm this before they changed the information.

Here's a the copy of the email if you're interested:

i didn't say it was always the case. i said "often" not always. and it may be the case that it was something commonly done in the past and it is not bothered to be done anymore. I just saw Spider-man 3 this past weekend and after the 20 minutes of promo material was over (but before the trailers began) the screen changed size to 2.35:1 yet every single trailer shown before it was 1.85:1 (they had bars on the sides).

I've seen spelling police and grammar police...but I don't believe I've seen a "how to write the ratio in an appropriate format" police! :D

Mr. Salty 05-21-07 06:06 PM

You haven't poked around these AR threads much then, have you? ;)

I see his point. It is confusing enough for some folks with all the different aspect ratio talk, letterboxed, widescreen, 16X9, etc. to introduce multipe conventions for describing these things.
