I was hoping for the same thing, too. Figured it'd be out in July. Interesting one of the special features is a sneak peek of The Simpsons Movie on DVD. The movie will have only been out a few weeks by this time and they're already shelling the DVD.

Woulda' been awesome if they coul've gotten Baldwin and Bassinger to do commentary on their episode.

Oh, and Pinchy makes this set an absolute must-buy:

And let's not forget the Bi-Mon-Sci-Fi-Con!!!

C'mon, this season is still solid Simpsons.

Have you um... been following the news lately?

majorjoe23 05-08-07 12:15 PM

My guess is that is why it would be awesome.

I have to assume that was the joke.

Season 9...shudder

Season 9 had some terrible episodes, without a doubt. Just thinking about "The Principal and the Pauper" gives me hives. But episodes like "The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson," "The Cartridge Family," "Lisa's Sax," and "The Joy of Sect" were as good as anything the series ever put out.

And now that I'm looking at the list of episodes for Season 10... there are some alright ones there... but "Sunday Cruddy Sunday" might be one of the worst ever, and I could say that about a few others as well.

I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but it really makes me scratch my head when people say there was no decline in quality in this show around this point. I could understand if you still find it funny, but to not notice a shift in tone and style? It's absurd. The voice acting even started to sound different - Homer's voice has gotten much higher in pitch, as has Bart's - and the animation has gotten too bright and slick. Pop culture references, which were previously only used in moderation, are constant, and celebrity guest stars began to be used with a complete lack of creativity, usually just playing themselves, and even when they're not playing themselves, their characters are drawn to look exactly like them.

Okay, I'll shut up now. I knew this time would come, it's just depressing thinking about the fact that the quality of this show came tumbling down at this point in the series, and we finally reached that point in the DVD releases.

Hey this comes out on my birthday!

Too bad I quit with season 8. -wink-

fryinpan1 05-08-07 03:11 PM

As others have said, Season 10 (and some of Season 9) was when I quit watching the show. I will probably get this season since I do not think I have seen many of the episodes.

Nicely put. Homer vs. New York is indeed a breath of fresh air--season 9 started on a high note and just went down from there.

I think the Simpsons jumped the shark much earlier than this--as early as season 5 I started noticing bad habits/tics that would mestastisize later--the show stopped having stories about 3-dimensional characters that the audience cares about.

Season 10 will be my last as well.

BUT, which season (i dont even know the name of the ep) is where Linguo (that smart Robot Lisa invents) comes out?

He's in Trilogy Of Error from Season 12. One of the few highlights that year actually.

Season 10 is a must buy for me. Sure, the show started to slide, but there's enough episodes to make it worthwhile. Season 11 is a whole other matter. That year has very few good episodes, and contains what I still consider the worst episode ever, Saddlesore Galactica. I'd like to eventually have the entire run on DVD, but from Season 11 on I'll be waiting for cheap sales to pick them up rather than buying them immediately.

Ravenous 05-08-07 09:47 PM

Damn, that was a great ep. Ill get the season just for that ep, but when it drops down really cheap. Once 10 comes out, Im done busting my ass to get these.

Bluelitespecial 05-08-07 10:50 PM

Doesn't this season have the jerry Springer Halloween episode on it, that one was a classic as well.

Living Dead 05-09-07 02:44 AM

Maybe they'll stop doing commentaries and start releasing them faster. That would be fine by me.

grim_tales 05-09-07 04:31 AM

I'll probably get S10 - damn. I still have S6, 7, 8 and 9 to get.
There were some funny episodes in S10.

Yes it did, that was "Treehouse of Horror IX"
The "Trilogy of Error" episode was remarkable, very good :)

Ethan VanSciver 05-09-07 06:29 AM

I'll be buying all of them. I quit watching them premiere on TV about ten years ago, so most of this stuff will be new to me! Looks good!

Seantn 05-09-07 07:19 AM

If you quit watching the show about 10 years ago, then you will indeed be in for a surprise! Might not be the one you're expecting, though.

Eep, don't even suggest that. The commentaries are fantastic, and easily the biggest perk to buying these DVDs.

"Trilogy of Error" was a fantastic episode, and it's making me think about maybe branching up to Season 12 as opposed to stopping at 10... I'd forgot about it, and I couldn't just buy 10 and then 12 without buying 11.. hmm..

But yeah, if they stopped the commentaries it wouldn't even be worth putting these terrible episodes out.

nodeerforamonth 05-09-07 10:06 AM

I don't think the series has ever started to "slide" or go "downhill". I just think that we've been watching it way too long and know what to expect. Or after 10 years are kind of sick of watching it.

I still laugh at loud at episodes this season.

Not me. Some of these awful episodes coming up we need commentary. I want someone to explain to me what the hell was going through their minds when they made Saddlesore Galactica.

People always say this, and it may have been relevant back around seasons three and four, but these are coming out at a pretty steady clip now. And indeed, as someone who feels that the show definitely dropped in quality after season nine (but still has yet to reach the awful nadir of seasons fifteen through the present), I welcome the commentaries as a chance to hear Matt Groening et al explain the stories behind this batch of shows.

Of course, the commentators often spend time laughing at the jokes on the show, which was endearing during the first nine seasons, but might become grating when they're enjoying these "lesser" shows.

bluetoast 05-09-07 11:07 AM

Yeah, count me in for eventually getting as many seasons as possible. Whether it's BF or a release of a new season, there will always be a good price on these to justify my purchases.

But is it just me or are Matt Groening's letters to the viewers getting worse and worse? I haven't seen season 9's but season 8's letter seemed like he just didn't care. Maybe it was a joke though.

grim_tales 05-09-07 11:55 AM

I might get Season 10 and 11. Not sure.

Mayored to the Mob - and Pinchy - classics they are :)
